“Reaper’s Bones, take the ***** and be done! All things must die, but Dark Rewards will come from her agony…”
The ragged figure holding the guttering torch aloft in one hand spits his vile words, then speaks others of arcane magic in a hollow voice. Beneath his long hair his face breaks in a rictus grin, at the sight of the Sacred Flame, and his other hand reaches out this time to Fimrold, a smoking spectral claw manifesting before him…

And miss, the dwarf just dodging its necrotic reach as it dissipates into noisome black vapors...
OOC: A number of consecutive lower rolls, Adventurers, a two-edged blade for both sides. Yokai has the initiative, and perhaps the tides shall shift!
Moving 15' east, Yokai will end up at the corner of the two tunnels using 20' of movement and counting Rigor's space as double movement. He'll peek up at the opened grate and loudly mumble something about his sword... Turning back to the task at hand, he'll use his bonus action to cast the spell Hex on the first enemy combatant in line. As his action, he'll produce a glowing white ephemeral dagger of force from the damp air and hurl it at his opponent (a reskinned Eldritch Blast).
/OOC I'm hesitant to use another one. Two things: I'm not sure if there's a limit to the number that can be used during a turn, and I'm not sure given the math that it would be wise for me to use another one. I'd save it for whomever is in front when their turn comes. Us ranged party members are have to deal with cover when attacking.
Javelin, Hex, dagger of glowing white force…the Fist of Bane crushing Casta with his mace to take her to a fate worse than death stands before the onslaught of them all, his teeth still bared in a predator’s smile. The rasp of chain mail and clash of moving metal echoes from the dark, cavernous space beyond the tattered form holding the torch aloft…
OOC: A quick note on the gifting and use of Inspiration Points – they may be used to gain (or give) advantage on one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw, which means that only one additional roll can be made for a given circumstance, with the best of the two rolls taken as the result. A most worthy and noble offer, however, and one which can likely be leveraged again all too soon!
OOC: Sorore has the initiative, followed immediately by Casta and then Belmort!
Sorore leaps into the sewer shaft without hesitation. Her gray Ilmatari greatcloak floats upwards, and midnight blue darkness spreads briefly beneath it. She lands softly beside Murdoch, and gives him one arch-browed look as she eases right behind him to his north. Within a few steps, Sorore whirls about with her shortbow fully drawn. She seeks the closest Fist of Bane with her arrow.

OOC: Sigh - I think that's the same result as Casta's last round, which didn't succeed. Still glad I checked before calling it a night! BTW, without a new map on this page, I assumed that Yokai was now between Brother Rigor and Fimrold. Thanks!
/OOC Sorore, please forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't think your to-hit bonus is only +3 with your bow. Casta's was +4 because of her Dex and proficiency, totaling 17 before +2 was added to the enemy's AC for cover. I believe your roll should be +5, before the +2 is added to the enemy's AC, which may be enough to hit. Every little bit counts!
OOC: Good Afternoon, Adventurers; waiting in an airport at the moment, so thought it a useful time to check in. Thanks for all the excellent dialog; really appreciate you having each other's backs on the roleplay and "rollplay," which the PbP format actually facilitates. Confirmed that Sorore was aware of her +5 bonus to the roll, and that she reduced it herself by 2 because she was aware of the cover penalty. I think it's worth noting Yokai's approach, and incorporating that as an SOP. Specifically - please make your rolls with your full bonuses, and where something such as cover improves an enemy's AC, I'll make the modifications accordingly outside your roll.
OOC: I'll offer the following insight, since you've struck the Fist of Bane once already (Murdoch). His AC is 18 (chain mail and shield, no Dex bonus) without cover, and 20 with half-cover.
OOC: Apologies to Sorore for the absence of an updated tactical map. Next post will include it, capturing both her and Yokai's movement.
OOC: Casta has the initiative, followed immediately by Belmort!
Even underground Casta can see the heavens. Stars dance brightly around her head. She feel buoyant, yet submerged. In tune with a new reality, safely distant from danger. For a long moment, she feels disembodied, as through pulling upward toward her ancestral home. A warm, loving embrace covers her face. Sweat? Tears? Vision blurs in the warm wet. She blinks twice and the compression of her ribs pushes up into soft, demanding focus. Trauma demanding attention. Dolorous embodied. Her vision comes to a foggy resolve. Armored feet. Shield in house position. Sitting in the dark. Memory from but a moment ago registers in her addled head. Armored feet shifted left. Shield answered left to counter the blow but right vambrace collapses and ribs compresses. Reversed swing. Can you do that with a mace? Soooo heavy, a mace. Silly word. Mace mace mace mace mace mace.
The threats of the priests go unheard and the crossbow bolt deeply finding its mark go unperceived, unheeded. Clatter of javelin, dagger and arrow against the cold stone and steel, however, are close to her head and the echoes of clink and clank penetrate the feathered bassinet. She recovers her wit enough to remember the danger immediately in front of her, even as she sits off balance on the cold, filth slick stone. Unable to form words, much less eloquent threats or curses, Casta surprisingly finds her fingers still grasping the spear. She pushes out a most un-demure guttural utterance and lances her spear wildly toward the still visible feet. Not seeking purchase, but at least forcing the Fist of Bane off balance enough to not throw a good blow. She pushes up from the kneeling sit, still off balance. Left shoulder and side sliding noisily along the fetid grime as she pulls the shield in close while continuing ineffectual jabs with the spear point. While not decisive thrusts, they do serve to cover her leaning retreat along the east wall as she fades behind Belmort and Feldinor to stop in front of Fimrold where she finally stands tall and shakes her head clear. Hear me Helm. Don't fail me now. Hold me together.
---------------------
Mechanics: Disengage Action. Move 15' to the north. Expend 25' of movement. End of turn. No bonus action or interactions. (Kneeling and getting knocked on my a$$ are story skin. Did not have the prone condition, so retain full move for the tactical retreat.)
Commentary: Unfortunately, the Fist of Bane did not use a reaction on his turn, so his AoO is still an option. With one (1) HP, was not ready to risk going down with this particular tactical situation. Needed to escape safely and create the opportunity for Belmort to shine (and not get myself also kidnapped). Only if he had he used a reaction for something, could I have chanced an attack while retreating.
Belmort recognizes the open space left be Casta and moves 5’ south. With a large breath in and a loud roar as he exhales he expels a cold dragon breath weapon.
Damage 9
Belmort then draws his war hammer to prepare for fight to continued.
As a bonus action Belmort use his second wind to recover from his wounds and continues to hold the front line.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Casta’s swift recovery from the Fist of Bane’s heavy mace, coupled with the flurry of her spear thrusts, holds the heavily armored warrior’s crushing blows at bay as she disengages past Belmort and Feldinor, pressed tight to the eastern wall. The Banite snarls as the Paladin of Helm escapes his reach…for now.
Belmort surges to the fore as Casta edges by him, drawing in a great breath with his strides and exhaling a tightly bound cone of freezing cold, borne of his silver dragon heritage, that extends some 15 feet to the south and envelops both Fists of Bane within its reach…
Fist of Bane with Mace and Shield Con Save with Advantage: 3 and 21
Fist of Bane with Longbow Con Save with Advantage: 8 and 5
The Banite warrior closest to Belmort takes the full impact of the Dragonborn's cold breath, his snarling mouth agape as he shakes violently and gasps for air through the layer of ice and frost covering his hair, face, and chest. Somehow he remains on his feet, staggering, yet still a threat. The archer, however, manages to discern the Fighter's intent, and presses himself to the eastern wall of the sewer tunnel, shivering as frost forms across one side of his head, and the chain mail of his leading left arm and shoulder.
Belmort draws his warhammer with his next breath, and gathers his inner fortitude to hold the front line in the company's stand against the cultists...
OOC: Good Evening, Adventurers! Once I'd read the actions of the day, I thought it imperative to respond as early as I could to get the results out. Casta, let me say that I very much enjoyed the superbly crafted entry above, and appreciated the amount of context and detail captured therein to execute the Disengage Action. I hope others found the same with the compelling read; given your sacrifice of Inspiration earlier to a companion, this is a rulebook-defined opportunity to restore yours. Belmort, well-played on your own turn, leveraging every aspect of the move to highly useful effect with your abilities...just not quite enough! Full damage (9, total of 21) to one Fist, half damage (4) to the other.
OOC: With that, the intrepid Rogue Feldinor has the initiative!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Well....looks like I'm going to have to pull off a miracle. Tymora seems to be favoring our enemy...or perhaps it is merely an opportunity for a dramatic action?!
Feldinor lines up another arrow shot hoping that having one less companion in the way will allow his shot to pierce the enemy.
Attack: 18 Damage: 9
"Damn it!!! I told you I'm not good at this archery thing. I'm more up close and personal." Feldinor uses his free hand to pick up his short sword and smiles...then whispers to Casta "never tell me the odds".... as he advances into a better combat position using the uncanny nimbleness his race is known for to get on the opposite side of his foe.
[OOC]Action to attack...which obviously failed miserably...Move 20' south...free interact with object during move to pick up the short sword...halfing nimbleness (per emails with @GM) allows me to move through occupied spaces of medium creatures as normal terrain....this will either be EPIC or a bloody mess failure!! My fate is in the hands of Tymora[/ooc]
OOC: Good Evening, Adventurers! I first wanted to compliment Feldinor on the excellence of his entry above - the eminently true-to-form roleplay and audacity, even when it will potentially hurt, are outstanding and worthy of Inspiration!
OOC: I next wanted to note that I as DM was wrong on the ruling that Feldinor cites above. While Halfling Nimbleness as a trait does indeed let Feldinor pass through a medium-sized enemy's space as no one else can, the rules specify repeatedly that the space of another creature, whether hostile or not, still counts as difficult terrain.
OOC: Resolution on the above, after consulting with Feldinor: Our Rogue does not actually take the initial bow shot, instead thinking his way through it and realizing his slim chance of success. He then roleplays and draws his short sword as described, using the Dash Action to go the total 30' required to execute his movement as described, and still most definitely leaving his fate in the hands of Tymora from this point forward! This allows the move to fully end as Feldinor notes above. Thanks, all; more excitement to follow, as two enemies have the initiative between Feldinor and Murdoch!

OOC: Thanks, Yokai! I hope the Fates will consider it a worthy sacrifice!
