(( ooc: What is needed for mapmaking; Galtheon would happily assist...he has a lot of time waiting while other people sleep.
And I agree re: Taraven: she is the natural choice for the bracers, longbow, quiver and arrows, if she wants it. All it does is add +2 damage for Galtheon, whereas she gets a whole new ranged option that makes her a credible archer. Loot list tentatively updated. ))
Cartography is ideal, otherwise absent a tool proficiency just a straight Int check. Proficiency in Survival and your excellent vantage point does provide advantage, however.
At Okkar's request, Galtheon draws in a breath and grimaces, "I mostly remember the maps I need."
He nods in the direction of Taraven, "Perhaps the lass and I could work together on it...I notice things, and am good with distances and landmarks, and she seems handy with a pen and sketching."
He looks over to Taraven to see if she is willing.
"Let's see your map again." he says to Okkar, then takes it and studies if for a time.
When Taraven finishes whatever she is doing, Galtheon goes to her with the map and his commentary on errors, omissions and inaccuracies.
(( ooc: Hopefully together they can produce a slightly better result over the coming days...using Taraven's INT roll ;-) ))
(( While he's idle each night, after maintaining armour and weapons, he will ponder the map and the days travels, making a list of changes to discuss with Taraven. As they rest for lunch or dinner, he will climb nearby hills to get better views -- as much an excuse for quiet time as to improve the map.
People will notice he doesn't tend to eat much; he has small bites of his rations occasionally, and eats any leaves, berries, or other wild foods he comes across. He also doesn't seem to starve. He mainly eats so his stomach is not continuously empty. ))

[DM, Did Nanoc have any success with his hunting expedition? What I am trying to do is stretch out his 10 9 days of rations as far as they will go. If possible, he would like to not use any more of his rations before reaching the mine by hunting and gathering food along the way.]

When Nanoc returns to the camp carrying the results of his efforts, Galtheon nods to him and says, "If you'd prefer to keep some of that for a rainy day, try one of these lad".
He tosses him a goodberry, "They're not to everyone's taste, but they keep you going. I recommend mxing 'em with a bit of food, to keep the body happy."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Unable to catch 9 the thrown berry because of the firewood he was carrying, Nanoc stares at it suspiciously.
"I've eaten these before," he says, putting down his load and picking up the berry. "There nice and sweet, but they will give you the s**ts, if you eat too many of them."
So saying, he pops the berry in his mouth and chews...
And gawps in amazement as the magic takes effect.
"Are you a shaman?" he asks. "Or is this some sort of elvish magic?"
Galtheon speaks like he is repeating something he was told. "It's a gift from nature, like any other. Those who work to preserve a certain balance are able to request certain boons."
"I've no time for gods, boy. Look around you..." he says, waving his arms to encompass the hills and mountain ranges they can see from their vantage point near the recently vacated peak.
"Isn't that enough?"
He considers for a moment, then shakes his head. "It is what it is. I guess...an unspoken agreement."
(( ooc: Need sleep. Don't plan to be on very late tonight, but who knows...if I'm not...then I'd vote for the long route; won't complain of the short route is chosen. Happy for people to make skill rolls for things if needed. If we get to mine, then:
The night before we go in Galtheon will offer the ring to Ilecerys, so he can attune it. "It's useful, but more to you in the mine. The lad can do the sneaking now -- he has those goggles, and I will wear this monstrosity in there" he says, waving his arms at the cleaned armour.
"Avastar. Not a name I've heard. Is that what led you to plead the harpies case?"
"Avastar is the cold monarch of what you outers call Seren Island," says Nanoc. "I am... was... one of those that he protected."
Then, after a moment, he adds, "Life on Seren Island can be harsh. Avastar teaches that one should only take what one needs to survive, for the greed of one can cause the death of many when times become hard and all must work together to survive in the face of the storm."
Having said his piece, Nanoc turns suddenly away and starts preparing the fire.

Evan is fine with not having the goggles—he prefers to cast his “Light” cantrip anyway. Also, he will liberally use Guidance when people are making important skill rolls and we have time—like making a map (please add the d4 to your skill in these cases).
The longer route with no extra climbing which is safe for the horses makes a lot of sense to him.

Yes, Nanoc can easily find enough game and fresh water in the area to subsist off of that instead of having to tap into his personal rations stock. To find enough for the entire group would entail a survival or nature check. In these surroundings at present it would be DC 10. Goodberry access also makes that less of an issue, however.
You expect to arrive at the Knuckle shortly by either route, within one day or two to three by the route without climbing.

OOC: As it seems the group has elected to take the longer route where the horses can be led up to the mine entrance, I am going to move the game forward accordingly.

The next two days of travel involve a bit of back tracking, going back and around the clifftop where you battled the harpies to approach The Knuckle from a different path. This one was more difficult to see from the ground level, but once identified it does provide a smoother and less steep, albeit more indirect, route to the mine.
The first day the group sees some wild goats grazing on the path, but they scatter from the noise of your horses. By night you hear the howling of wolves, and those with darkvision do see the pack, six or so by your count, get as close as about 100 feet away while you are camped, but they are hesitant to approach the fire. There are no other encounters of note as you approach The Knuckle.
A fresh stream is discovered about a ten minute walk from where you sighted the mine entrance from your prior high vantage, where your waterskins can be refilled and the horses watered, and the party can bathe if they wish.
The tall trees fall away as you emerge from the high tree line. Before you is a slope of broken shale, fallen scree, and struggling scrub pines tenaciously clinging to the windswept peak. The mountain’s face juts abruptly outward, forming a knobby, knuckle-like protrusion of stone. A deep crack in the stone holds a pair of large, intricately carved doors. A 10’ wide stairway of long, broad stairs ascends to the doors. Flanking the stairway and doors in the angled rock walls are the dark, narrow apertures of loopholes. The steps on the stairs are low and broad, presumably designed to accommodate the mule trains that brought supplies to the Knuckle and carried ore away. The loopholes on either side of the stairs are located 15’ above the ground.
It looks like one of you could climb the stone wall to peer in (with a DC 10 Strength (Athletics) check) or by being boosted up by a comrade (same but with Advantage).
The doors bear skillful geometric carvings that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Both doors are closed.
OOC: Essentially there is an obvious entryway, the closed double doors in front, as well as two areas to either side of the entrance that could be accessed or viewed by climbing.
Outside The Knuckle there is ample space to camp and tie off the horses, and as noted before there is a water source about a 10 minute walk away. The group arrives at the Knuckle about a half hour after sundown the second day of travel (assuming the group pressed on, seeing their goal in sight).
