Galtheon works with the others, following the landmarks Okkar describes, and you quickly find a path he feels confident in. "This is definitely the way we came, I'm sure of it."
Galtheon stares at the lad for a moment, having grudgingly appreciated his help so far, "Let's put it this way boy: I remember when the war started."
He sighs, and pats the horses neck before continuing, "But my true wandering...when I finally said goodbye to the forest. Well, that started with the Cataclysm."
[GM, Just for reference, and to judge just how far Nanoc's jaw drops, do we have an Eberron date for this scenario? I can look up the differences between the two events mentioned above, but that won't mean as much if I don't know what the current date is.]

OOC: I am setting it in the default 998 YK, 2 years after the end of the 100 year war.
After several hours of travel, at sunset, the Iron Mountains surround you like teeth, casting sinister shadows. Those with passive perception of 14 or higher notice the corpse of a mountain lion lying broken and impaled atop a spire of narrow, jagged rock off to the side of the trail you are rediscovering.
Galtheon nudges Nanoc, using simple hand and eye signals to suggest he looks at the spire, if he hasn't already seen it. "What do you think that means?"
"Well there's something you don't see every day," observes Nanoc casually, while staring at the unnatural scene before him.
He then looks around to see if the big cat could have been unlucky enough to fall on the spire of rock from somewhere higher, or whether it has actually been placed there, possibly as a warning against trespassers.

The dwarf shades his eyes as he squints to look at it, and shakes his head slowly. "Doesn't seem natural. Those cats are nimble predators. Not the sort to take a tumble like that."
Nature: 20 ; ((more of a hunter than a naturalist ))
OOC: But a natural 20 is a natural 20.
Galtheon's keen eyes take in all the details - the hunting cat has blood and feathers in its jaws, but jutting from its side is a broken spear tip. It fell onto its back, where most cats would instinctively do otherwise. Your eyes follow a pattern into the sky, towards a spire of jagged mountains the sun is setting behind, making the iron mountains look like a series of daggers jutting from the earth. Your best guess is that this cat attempted to prey on a Harpy, and lost - speared, forced into the air, and then dropped from a great height. You believe the Harpy nest is high above, but in the general direction your path is taking you.
OOC: You could use Survival to find a detour, but it will cost an extra day at minimum to do so. Continuing on the current course could have you beset by Harpies during the night. The Harpies hunting grounds are far from any cities, but close enough to the trading post and its handful of workers that they could pose a threat.
Galtheon snorts in amusement at Nanoc's remark, then frowns when he realizes he was serious.
"Would that life were so easy boy."
Pointing to their nest, he says "Harpies. Ahead of us."
"Your call, Okkar. We can try to go around, or hope they don't attack us. But I'd worry about the horses either way -- their smell will likely attract all kinds of interest."
[[ OOC: is this forest, desert...etc...wondering if it's Galtheon favoured terrain (forest) ]]

"Harpies? Well damn," Okkar says, rubbing his hand over his beard. "I'd prefer to avoid a skirmish with harpies, could diminish our resources before we even get to The Knuckle. Or, you know, kill us. Still, if we don't take the fight to them, you're right, they could come after us, or just prey on our horses while we're in the mine, and the horses are unguarded. I'm sure Nanoc wouldn't want to lose Smoke like that, and I wouldn't want to lose, uh, Sir Percival Von Horseface, here. OK, I never named my horse, just trying to fit in a bit. Do you think we could find a path to their nest, maybe even take them unawares?"

Nanoc is still suitably impressed and mutters something along the lines of most people where he comes from not living past their forties.

"Mean anything to you Okkar?" asks Galtheon.
OOC: As the carcass has been noticed by the group, anyone can now roll Nature to discern what this might mean.

Nanoc's nature roll: 3
[OOC: LOL! One extreme to the other.]
"Maybe it committed suicide," says Nanoc in all seriousness.

Tharavan also comes to the same conclusion - the mountain lion was killed by a Harpy most likely - but she fails to discern the location of the nest.
"Times are hard all around, here in clan Droranath's domain, but the animals are usually better off than the people," Okkar responds.
[OOC: Although the text I edited in after my roll isn't showing, Nanoc is still thinks that the big cat somehow committed suicide.]
