"Horses would be a fine choice. Who knows what we may need to carry back, or what we may meet along the way." Ilecerys drains his mug and joins the group at the trading post.
For Evan, and anyone else who made a DC 15 religion check, you have some knowledge of this particular creature. This matches the description of Stoneghosts.
They are indeed a rare form of Undead. You know they are Resistant to cold, fire, lightning; bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical weapons, but magical weapons will harm them as normal. They are Vulnerable to radiant and thunder. They are immune to necrotic and poison damage, as well as paralysis, poison, and sleep. Unlike other ghosts, they are actually material beings - the term "Stoneghost" is inaccurate. They are mistaken for true ghosts by their ability to move through earth and stone. Other surfaces such as wood block them as any other material creature.
"Yeah, let's take the horses," says Nanoc, agreeing with Okkar. "Smoke don't mind carrying around all the stuff I've accumulated over my travels, and I wouldn't feel right leaving him somewhere strange."
Okkar nods his agreement. “Very good, Nanoc. If we flee the mine to rest outside, I might ask that you be the one to climb down to see to the horses. Maybe we can take turns in that. I would prefer we handle it slow and steady this time, to avoid more casualties. The mine has been undiscovered for decades. We can ensure we do this the right way, it just means being deliberate.”
"Happy to," replies Nanoc with regard to the horses. "Will we need to take food for them, or is there enough food in the area for them to eat if with hobble them with a long lead?"
Okkar thinks back. "I wouldn't take chances, we should bring feed. The creatures I encountered do not leave the mine, but there are other threats they could encounter if allowed to roam to free. I value my own horse as well, perhaps we don't have the same bond as you and Smoke, Nanoc, but I'd sooner we ensure they are provided for. Then again, you are a skilled outdoorsman, yes? Perhaps you can judge their safety for yourself when we arrive." OOC: You can use Survival to make the determination when onsite.
“I need a bedroll, tent, and a potion of healing, if you have it. Is the dried jerky any good? And about the horses, how much would it be to buy one outright?
Their prices are PHB standard, including the potions for 50 GP. The only horses they have are draft horses, which are also 50 GP to buy outright, or 5 GP per week to rent.
Kerina gets within 30 feet of the trading post, then Misty steps inside just to style. "How much for a horse?" (she then uses the time where I am asleep Irl to take a short rest and recover said misty step) She then buys a horse. OOC: do the horses already have names?
"A pick and shovel then, if we are to be miners. And a horse for the week." Ilecerys gathers his things, loads up his horse once it is ready, and prepares to set out.
After your purchases are complete, you all set off on horses owned or rented. You start on well paved trails among the mountains, but soon venture off the beaten path, following Okkar’s instructions.
Okkar seems to know the way, but he does warn you that the Iron Mountains themselves have dangers above and beyond those of the terrain. He also does not seem to have a perfect recollection of the path he took. “It was chaos and confusion, when I fled,” he says apologetically. “We don’t have to find the lost mine from scratch, I just need to find some recognizable landmarks and, err, get my bearings.”
OOC: Would whoever has the highest survival skill in the party make a Survival check, with advantage of another party member assists, to follow the landmarks Okkar describes and try to re-establish the trail to The Knuckle?
While the others are buying gear for the journey, Nanoc will gather together his things once more and go out and, after apologising to Smoke for having to set out again so soon and checking that he does indeed have sufficient feed for the journey, starts packing the horse in preparation for riding out. [OOC: Mechanically this means I will indicate on my character sheet what he has on his person, what is in his backpack and what is in his saddle bags and on the horse's back.]

Evan will rent a horse for the week, but he is used to sleeping under the stars and chooses not to purchase a tent. Perhaps a crowbar, yes, that could be good going into a mine, and a miner's pick, that would be good too. Feed for the horse as well.
Back in the saloon, Evan reacts to the dwarf's description of the creatures who attacked him in the mine, "I've heard tales of creatures like you mention, Ironeyes. An old sailor told me his crew went aground on some particularly rocky shoals and ran into one. It took everything they had to take it down, with their weapons doing little damage and only the one magic crossbow bolt they had doing any real damage. Luckily their ship's doctor finally realized it was some kind of undead, and he was able to blast it with holy energy until it broke apart and lay in pieces on the ground. A Stoneghost, they called it, because it flowed right out of the rocky shoals to attack them. Chilling story. I've a spell or two to fight them with, but magic weapons can be used again and again, if you have them."

[OOC: My bets on the Elf Ranger. Nanoc has the skill, but not the ability bonuses (i.e. he has +2 for Survival). He is certainly willing to provide Help to gain Advantage though.]
Galtheon looks over the horses, trying to judge their temperament, looking also for the least skittish, but ideally one that looks overworked that could do with a few days easy riding, and decent food -- so long as he thinks it can make the distance.
When he finds the best match he says, "I'll rent this one, perhaps buy when I return. And I'll need fresh vegetables and some grain -- oats or the like -- and whatever else your normally feed them."
(( Not sure which is appropriate for the various judgements: Animal Handling: 12 (passive 13); Perception/Survival/Insight the same: 13 (passive 15) ))
[[ OOC I have assumed he has paid about 50% more per day than PHB for 7 days feed; so he has better food for the horse than normal ]]
For the trail:
(( I think Galtheon has highest survival (5). Roll with advantage: 14 ))
Galtheon and Nanoc confer about the landscape, discussing likely threats as well as making the best mental notes they can between them on the way they are going, and the way back. In case they are attacked, they are also keeping an eye out for likely ambush location and defensible positions.
As the journey progresses they occasionally confer about what they have noticed and how they interpret it.
On the trail, Evan looks up at the sky and says, "I can navigate by the sun and the stars, but not so much by the lay of the land. I can help you with the direction we are headed, but not any landmarks." (His skill with navigator's tools is primarily for sea travel, but he can orient by the stars regardless.)

Nanoc lets Galtheon take the lead with checking for possible ambushes, etc., although Galtheon probably notices that despite his apparent lack of attention Nanoc doesn't miss much.
Instead, Nanoc actually seems more interested in talking, "So, you're an elf, probably been doing this sort of thing longer than I've been alive. How old are you?"

Galtheon is able to quickly gain the trust of his horse. Again, despite their earlier attitude towards elves, it seems the dwarves here will gladly accept your coin. "Price of feed is included, we'll set you up with enough for two weeks, just in case," the man with the prosthetic arm declares. "If you decide the buy, rental price is a down payment. Can't beat that."
Galtheon stares at the lad for a moment, having grudgingly appreciated his help so far, "Let's put it this way boy: I remember when the war started."
He sighs, and pats the horses neck before continuing, "But my true wandering...when I finally said goodbye to the forest. Well, that started with the Cataclysm."
