(It sounds like you are taking a short rest. The mountain and a few nearby trees can be scaled for a better vantage point. There is an area large enough to put up the Tiny Hut at one of the wide parts of the path. You rest uninterrupted for an hour.)
Direcris wakes after the hour, albeit reluctantly. He looks towards the tower. "Were those just the usual bandits, you think? Or was there a special reason they were here?" HP: 30
"That they sought us is a definite possibility, Uri," Dench says, "but how did they know about us? Did the woman in the bar hire more than one set of adventurers? Did they follow us out of the town thinking they could rob us? Perhaps they were just bandits. One mentioned a toll."
He looks across toward the tower then walks close enough to see the river. He considers what he knows about surviving the crossing of a river (Survival: 16) or Steedling, if Survival is a stretch, investigates the river for a way over it (Investigation: 16).
Gadston snores a bit. After taking a deep breath/snore he wakes himself up, looking around a bit hazy eyed he states:
"After some careful thought I believe these were just bandits." Gadston says. "It would be a good spot. Folks make their way along the road to find themselves at a place they can't safely cross. And with their backs against the proverbial wall, the bandits show up with their demands."
"Speaking of which, how do we plan to get across?" Gadston asks. "Does anyone suspect there is another way along this side?"
Looking at the gap, the cliff face could be climbed down then up again. The bridge hanging below looks mostly intact; if it could be secured lifted up and secured on the far side, it could be used to cross.
Using his incredible speed, Uri dashes down the cliff. There is a small rocky outcropping before the frigid water of the river.
Uri will gather what equipment he needs - ropes, grappling hook, block & tackle, hammer, pitons etc. - in order to cross the chasm and haul the bridge up from the other side.
Anyone else accompanying Uri? He can fix ropes first to make it an easier climb, and it would help with hauling the bridge up - as well as keeping watch whilst doing so - but it would not be without some considerable risk.
"Splendid" Gadston says cheerfully. "I haven't mountain climbed since I was a young lad. My Father would take me on such expeditions." Gadston trails off at the last then perks right up again.
"I think I shall wait here and "hold the fort" as it were. If we all went then we wouldn't need to bring the bridge back up." he says with a smile.
"Unless we forgo the arduous task of reattaching the bridge and just go for a climb?" he asks.

"I doubt this is a well travelled trail, especially with the state of yonder bridge", opines Uri. "I'd say they were after us".
"Speaking of the bridge, how are we going to get across? I can probably climb the cliff, so long as I can get cross the river in one piece."

"I can scout ahead", offers Uri.
Gavyn climbs down as everyone finishes their rest. He takes a look around with his goggles for a way across: perception 19

Uri scouts down and around as far as his 50' movement and dash allows.
(At 9th level, you gain the ability to move along vertical surfaces and across liquids on your turn without falling during your move.)
Sir Gadston
Gadston collects his things and straightens his hair a bit. "Spot on Uri" as Uri states he is going to scout ahead.
Gadston will assist those who need it and will then set out the direction Uri headed in.

Gavyn will climb down and help Url.
(What kind of checks are we looking at DM?)

Direcris will go as well. He holds out one of the climber's kits, 20 of the pitons, and the two ropes. "For whoever wants them."
He'll also hand out 74 gp to each.

"Unless we forgo the arduous task of reattaching the bridge and just go for a climb?" he asks.
"That would certainly deter any further pursuit", observes Uri, "Though it may also hamper any, ah, tactical withdrawal we might need to make."
Dench will cast Guidance on anyone who'd like it and is close by. "May dawn's forever renewing light guide you," he says.
Death on the Water and Baldur's Gate Bodyguard
"We should deal with the bodies as well." Direcris looks down. "The river?"
"Or we string them from yon tree", suggests Uri. "If anyone finds them, they'd assume bandits."
(Anyone that wants to try to climb can make a Strength (Athletics) check, let me know if you are using one of the climber's kits)
Sir Gadston
Gadston takes one to the climbing kits. "It might be a bit tricky in armor but i think I can manage." he says with some confidence.
With that Gadston will try his hand at climbing.
