Krivoi_Rog you should be +7 on your Thieves' Tools checks to pick locks. So that is a score of 18to pick the lock, which is good enough.
Nos Heliwr deftly fiddles with the lock, his picks and tools poking and prying into the opening. A few tense moments later there is an almost inaudible click sound and the lock springs open. You're in.
The room beyond is totally dark but a small amount of ambient light filters in from the already dim hold. You could really do with some way to see what you are up to.
Beyond the door is a smaller hold [area 25]. It contains numerous crates, barrels and lock boxes. There are a lot and it's hard to make out any which might be more significant than the others in this murky light.
You can just make out the shape of two further doors leading aft from this room. Both are padlocked.

Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.
Vaclav has a knack for these things and soon locates a chest with a complex lock on it. The chest is cedar, lacquered to a rich gloss finish. This gives it a bright and valuable look. A detailed inspection reveals a small inscription under the side of the lid which reads, "To James. With all my love, Anne." It is about six feet long, two feet high and three feet deep.
Nos Haliwr spends a couple of moments examining the lock and declares it a "cunning device". He tells those of you gathered near that he believes it will take a series of correct actions with his tools to get it open; and any wrong move could cause the lock to jam.
Fortunately Burt's keyring does contain keys to the final two doors on this level. The aft of the hold reveals two further rooms. One [area 23] appears to be the brig (currently unoccupied) and the last room [area 24] is yet another storeroom. This one contains further crates and boxes. Significantly, one of the crates is labelled "Prisoners' Kit".
Nos Heliwr will don his kit, "Ah! Now I feel a wee more meself." With his tools proper he will set to work on the 'cunning device'; carefully checking for traps and then if he finds none, unlocking it. If he finds traps he will take different measures.
11 Looking for traps, he does not detect any, "well, 'ere we goes."
Opening the case, Ralfi is able to find the equipment he was captured with. Sadly for him Longshanks is not in there. Well, perhaps happily, as if he was in this crate he would surely have perished. Ralfi hopes the lovable hare is still somewhere aboard ship, but he's not down here in the hold.
Nos Heliwr has tried to open the cunning device which locks the lacquered chest in the hold, but it has proven too complex for even his highly skilled talents. He does think it could be forced open but that would make quite a lot of noise and certainly damage the chest. It would also risk damaging the contents.
Whilst looking around down here you realize that this section of the hold keeps valuable items. There is a small fortune in booty here. Some of it is clearly less than legal. It seems the captain of this ship is one of the, relatively common, unscrupulous Guild merchants who runs narcotics and other unsavoury items to the distant corners of the Republic.
Each of you is able to find your lost equipment inside the chest in the final room and you spend a few minutes strapping on weapons, leafing reverently through spell books and getting into various bits of armour. You are unchained, fully equipped and ready for anything.
However the noise of you moving around, opening chests and getting dressed, seems to have attracted attention. You can hear the unmistakable creak of footsteps on the planking above your head. Heavy, rhythmic and measured. You know these footsteps. Unless you're very much mistaken they belong to Bayo, the bald Ibini drum master. And he's coming your way.

Well shit.
Ralfi slinks backwards into the shadows (Stealth: 18), and clenches his quarterstaff tightly. As he does so, mystic energy flows through him, suffusing every splinter and pore of the weapon with radiance. The staff desires to strike of its own volition, like a coiled viper..... for shillelagh has been cast upon it.
Valcav smiles at the others for a second and moves back to the main hold before letting the fire in his hand go out. The others hear a snap in the darkness followed by the flutter of wings for a second before silence.
A few moments later Vaclav speaks. "There, now I can see. I am looking through Cherobog's sense so I can see in the dark but I cannot see or hear through my own. If you need me give a tap to my shoulder." This is followed by a short hoot.
Vaclav will have Chernobog fly to the top of the crates in room 26, near to the stairs. Chernobog has darkvision so Vaclav now can see 60 feet through his eyes. Vaclav will move back and sit with the other slaves, resting the chains on top of his hands but not locking them and putting his back to a wall to hopefully hide his quarterstaff laying on the floor behind him.

OCC Last time I added proficiency bonus and Advantage to Sleigh-of Hand as Nos Heliwr is proficient with thief's tools; was I not suppose to do that?
5 Sleigh-of Hand with no other modifiers other than the CHA bonus - which seems very odd Ability check for a mechanical skill.
So, no +2 proficiency, no Advantage added; which s*#!s
Re-trying his re-try, hoping to get it right, Nos Heliwr curses the lingering effects of being in chains on his erstwhile steady hands.

OCC What can be added to such a roll? I remember in the earlier versions of D&D there was a specific modifier for picking locks, etc.
