"I'm glad you asked I have several questions in fact. Where's Clay, he was sent to back to help here but I don't see him? How long is researching that book going to take and can I help? It'd not every day one gets a chance to look through a book as rare as this one? Finally, do you know how to destroy this book because eventually the Duchess of Rot will be back and come back for it?"
Craben is getting really excited at the prospect of researching this book and in his excitment, he doesn't slow down between words and asks the next question before they have a chance to answer the previous one.
Remalia points over to a nearby stretcher as you a badly injured, but still alive clay moaning and rolling around in his unconsciousness. "Your friend served us well. He shall be commended for his actions. As for the book, we're not really... researching it per se. You see Liches regenerate themselves next to their phylactery, and thus we shall be able to have her under our control. All we must do is simply place her in an antimagic field and interrogate her. Of course, once she tells us everything that she knows we will, of course, destroy the phylactery, but not until we are sure that she's told us everything. Her book itself is not one full of arcane lore, instead, it is one of dark and terribly evil spells. Though you may be curious, young Watcher, I would not even advise some of our archmages to read into this grimoire... lest they become corrupted by the dark arts that lie within." She then looks at you quizzically, trying to ensure you understand the magnitude of what might happen.
Craben replies "Okay. I understand. Just stay safe with this. I only saw a small slice of her power. Keeps us in touch with what you know. If you need anything in the future feel free to ask."
Remalia looks towards the small wizard and says to him in a calm voice: "Frist we will extract the information from her. Then we will ensure that the information is true and backed up by the evidence that we have, and lastly, we shall destroy the phylactery with a dispelling of the ninth circle. This should render her unable to regenerate herself, and from there we simply slay her, ensuring that she can no longer harm anyone again." She then nods: "Does that sound... acceptable?"
After nodding in agreement you all take the teleportation circle back to Baldur's Gate. As you leave the voice of Elonast rings in your ears as you hear a: "Thank you for purging my master of the corruption inside of her. You are indeed heroes of brave hearts." Then with a flash the forest vanishes and you find yourself in some kind of shack. A sleeping half-elven woman wearing dark blue robes with ends of silver immediately awakes upon your arrival. "Oh... Hello. I don't think I've seen you around here before. Umm... please quickly sign in and out. Thank you for using the Harper Teleportation Circle (tm)." The woman extends a board with a piece of paper along with an ink quill. After quickly writing down who you are, where you came from, and what your business is in Baldur's Gate the half-elf gestures for you to go through the door of the shack. Upon doing so you hear a strange, almost mechanical voice say: "They do not wish for harm. Access to outside granted." As the door opens you find yourselves in the docks district of the bustling metropolis, life still seems quite normal, even though your world has been flipped over for the last several days.
We're now going to do another cooperative roleplaying session. This is going to be over the span of ten days, so I would like Craben to do the first three days, Gwen the second, and Yosben the final four. The characters have no knowledge that they only have five days, but mind you, they were instructed to stay inside of Baldur's Gate. Feel free to post!
Craben: The first thing Craben does is rest; entirely exhausted from the whole experience. During his first couple days back he cannot help but restlessly await information about the lich. He is just sitting in the library waiting for Remala or the masked women to get in contact with him. Growing restless by the day he tries to occupy himself by reorganizing the library, however, he finds himself more often than not staring at the door waiting for a Harper to come in and give him an update on the progress of getting information from the Duchess of Rot.
Yosben: Yosben also immediately takes a nice deserved rest. Yosben also cannot help but finds himself curious about the status of the Duchess of Rot. He tries to pass time with Craben but gets bored of him as he is organizing the library. He is, however, grateful that Craben never noticed the missing book that fell into the ocean. He decides to pass the time while waiting by finding out where he can get a nice pair of thieves tools since skeleton figures can only get him so far.
Gwen: Takes a nice long rest when she gets back to her humble abode in the city. She spends some time with Clay. Asking him about what went down on his end of the fight. It is during this time that Gwen learns that Clay may not be joining us in future endeavors to discover what curse was affecting our dead friend. She spends her time trying to convince him to join us anyways. She doesn't know if she was successful.
Yosben: Found a new pair of thieves tools. Overnight, Yosben sneaks into the library, messing up as much as possible, unalphebetizing as many books as possible. Getting bored of messing up the books, he pulls a bunch off the shelves and makes a tower out of them. He sleeps all day afterwards.
Craben: Coming back to the library, he finds everything out of order. He pretends to be angry, but is really glad that he found something to do. On the inside, he really knows who it is, he just decides not to tell the angry librarians. A woman enters the library, who looks similiar to Remela, Craben excidedly starts asking questions but recieves a confused stare. Embarrassed, Craben goes deep into the library to pick out a random book and reads it.
Gwen: Decides to go on a short camping trip for three days. She tells Yosben and Craben where she's going and to let her know if they hear anything from the Harpers. She leaves Baldur's Gate with all of the supplies she owned and realizes she had nothing to use for shelter. Gwen just decides to wing it and builds a makeshift tent out of wood posts and a blanket.
Yosben: Realizes how much Craben likes to clean things up, so he did things a little more subtly this time. He was surprised that he still found everything he did. He soon gets bored of the library, and decides to explore the areas of Baldur's Gate he had not previously been to.
Craben: Still knows it was Yosben, and is still glad he gave him something to do, because he will not likely leave the library any time soon.
Gwen: Regretted going on the camping trip. It had rained heavily one night while she was sleeping, catching on the blanket, which soon fell right on her. She packed everything up while the rain was still falling, and was glad to return to the inn and sleep somewhere more comfortable.
Sorry for the delay. I was working on setting up the Roll20.
Tomb of Annihilation
Chapter 1: Port Nyanzaru
Part 1: The Masked Reveal Day 30, 1315 hours
You have been invited to the home of Syndra Silvane, a retired adventurer and merchant. A uniformed attendant leads you up a grand staircase to the third floor, then ushers you into a wood-paneled room with a fireplace, comfortable chairs, and a heavy table bearing goblets and bottles of wine. The darkly paneled walls are hung with maps and sea charts. Racks, shelves, and cabinets hold hundreds more rolled-up maps and charts. A person is seated in an overstuffed chair near the fire. You then see - as she turns around in the chair - that it is the masked figure from your previous mission. She then speaks to you once more in a terrible raspy voice that sounds even worse than last time: “H-Help yourselves to wine *COUGH*, and seat yourselves, friends — I *PAUSE* hope I may call you that. I sincerely *HACK* would like to thank you for your *PAUSE* tremendous work on with Zaldara. It is *COUGH* thanks to you that we managed to send out several groups between the factions and ourselves to the *HACK* location where we believe the curse to be emanating from. You see, the *PAUSE* Duchess informed us that the cause of this *COUGH* curse is a necromantic artifact called the Soulmonger, and according to Zaldara, it has been tracked to Chult. Any *PAUSE* questions so far?” The silver mask looks over at you all expectantly.
"What is this Soulmonger exactly? And how can an artifact in Chult be affecting people all the way here in Baldur's Gate? That's absurd if it has that sort of reach. I've never read of any artifact that can affect people that far out from it."
The masked person stares at Craben, which is quite unsettling since you cannot see their face. "Craben... this is spanning the entire material plane, it's possible that *COUGH* this is even farther-reaching than we originally believed. There has been *PAUSE* nothing akin to this in at least all of written record. Not only that, but *HACK* after the events in the Doomvault all of the chosen have been exhausted, and we're unsure *PAUSE* exactly when or even if they will be able to recover. So while I would normally not call upon... less *COUGH* experienced heroes... I'm *HACK* afraid I have a mission for you all."
Craben is unsure what to say. Something like this spanning the entire material plane. It's simply unheard of. Whoever created this must be extremely powerful. Certainly much too powerful for Craben to deal with. However, he cannot just simply deny a request for aid from a High Harper. But, there must be someone out there more qualified than him and his friends for this task. Just when Craben is about to voice his concerns he remembers the letter he read at Luskan's funeral. How he promised to escape his library and explore the world. Craben doesn't know much about Chult but he does know that this is his opportunity to go, explore, learn, and save his dear old friend.
"Yes. I'll accept this mission. I cannot speak for my friends but I promised Luskan that I'd explore this world and I intend to uphold that promise. I'll go to Chult and figure out and stop this Death Curse. And when I get back I'll resurrect Luskan myself to tell him all about Chult. Then together, all of us can adventure and learn together."
At the talk of resurrection, the figure seems to pause before then continuing to speak: "About *COUGH* resurrection. It seems that *PAUSE* the souls themselves are being devoured. We know not *HACK* exactly how this happens, but every night at midnight it has been discovered through divinations that *COUGH* a soul has a chance of being consumed. We know not how frequent or how much time is left, but *PAUSE* it seems that souls often vanish after twenty days or so. Nevertheless *PAUSE* we have been communing constantly and have found a certain soul who seems to have survived for the entire time that the *COUGH* curse has been active, so it is obviously not a set twenty-day limit. So, while I would *COUGH* try to move quickly, you should not rush to this device... that - won't - up like - others... So please *HACK* consider your options and gain an understanding of the land itself. Does that make *PAUSE* sense?"
OOC: Devouring is like how when a soul is added to a Lich's phylactery (or stuck inside of a Demilich's soul gem) and subsequently eaten it cannot be raised, not even with true resurrection.
"Yes, well I always intend to gather as my information as possible before pursuing any task. So, tell me has anyone else tried to locate this artifact? If so, what happened to them? Don't leave out any details. I'm already committed to this so I'd rather learn of any pass attempts now rather than later. There are answers in failure. Also, if we are to be doing this we would need some supplies. Would you be willing to accommodate us with such? Furthermore what info has this soul shared and do you know who this soul is? Can you get in contact with other souls; like Luskan's? I would very much like to know if he's still there."
"Something like this should not be possible! Scientifically, I mean." Yosben pauses. "Even with a wish spell, you can't do this. It's... supernatural."
The masked figure nods slowly: "Your assumptions are correct Anthropologist... You are not the first group that we have sent out. In fact, upon hearing that the artifact was in *COUGH* Chult, we sent one of our most powerful groups, they left eight days ago, and we lost contact four days ago. It seemed that they had ventured *PAUSE* into the jungle alone immediately upon coming to Chult. We funded that group quite heavily, providing all the best in *COUGH* adventuring equipment, and yet they were lost to the hostile environment of Chult. Therefore *PAUSE* we sent our next group. We tried to pay a sum for *HACK* equipment there as well, but at that point, our resources had run low with all of the other expeditions that we were commencing. Not only that *COUGH* but we have been trying to support the other faction's expeditions. Except we have *PAUSE* not heard anything from those groups either. At this point, it seems *LONG PAUSE* that you are one of our final hopes. We don't *HACK* have too much to provide for *COUGH COUGH* you, but I am willing to pay around fifty gold to each of you to fund the journey. In addition, I am willing to offer you something that none of the other groups had... information.
Chult is a peninsula ringed with mountains and choked with *HACK* rainforests. Enormous reptiles, savage goblins, and an army of undeadprowl its jungles and ruins. Mapping the place has always been nigh impossible, and nothing is known about the region’s current geography beyond a few miles from the *PAUSE*coast. Working from dozens of sea charts, log books, and explorers’ journals, I assembled everythingknown about the current state of Chult into one map. I’ll *COUGH* provide it to you if you undertake the mission.
As for the *COUGH* soul, it has been determined that one can cast Commune or Divination spells to determine the *HACK* state of a stolen, but not devoured soul. Sadly no forms of *PAUSE* communication are possible with these "lost souls."
In addition... If I my soul has not been devoured by that time, I would be more than willing to produce a *HACK HACK* magic item of considerable power for each of you. Currently, it is impossible for me to do so as the curse drains my strength every *HACK* passing day, but in the chance of your success... well just consider it an *COUGH* incentive." The figure then turns to Yosben:
"Indeed... that is precisely the problem. On a *COUGH* small scale, such as Tenebrous' gift granted to the most powerful of spellcasters this could occur... but it has *PAUSE* never been seen on such a large scale like this before."
Stoked by the fact that she might have the chance to go to one of the most unexplored region in Faerun, Gwen begins running through a list of items she might need on the journey. She loses track halfway through the list, her mind swarmed with thoughts of the upcoming adventure. While Yosben, Craben, and the masked figure are talking, she leaves to begin packing the necessary supplies, due to the fact that she understands nothing they are talking about, hoping they will fill her in later.

But the harder the hero fought, the further the world seemed to tumble away.
Drowning in doubt, the hero could not even save themselves.

"Well, 50 gold a piece is better than nothing. Like I already said I'm accepting the mission and it seems like Gwen is too. Look she is already beginning her preparations. Of course, we'll take our 50 gold a piece now in order to buy suitable equipment and we are grateful for a map, even if it is incomplete. I am curious, how do we get to Chult? Should we prepare for a long boat ride?"
