The Tales of Faerûn - Campaign Thread

Saravena stops to think for a moment about what this creature could be. She witnessed this creature change its shape after being knocked out. Meaning that its ability to change shape must require some form of concentration to maintain. Then she remembers reading a book about creatures that could take on the form of any other humanoid, doppelgangers.

Saravena shares her information on the creature with the rest of the party then looks around the room for any clue as to why the doppelganger was here in the first place.

Saravena sees in the corner of the room the still unconscious dwarf. However, she discovers a stitched lever sack hiding under Grol's bed mattress.

“Right, come on BiteNose help me set him up. Great job by the way without your help we couldn’t have been so successful.” Damian gives Bitenose a bit of acknowledgement for his part in the battle.

Seeing the unconscious dwarf Damian will kneel down to him and cast Cure Wounds.

As the dwarf begins to wake Damian will inquire his name “Hey you okay? You know where Gundren is?”

OOC: Good work everyone - that seemed to go somewhat flawlessly - but perhaps we should not get too comfortable here in a keep full of goblins...

The haze of his battle raging ending, the wildness in Tagret's eyes fade and he regains some composure, and as Saravena explains what she knows about the Drow/Doppleganger his eyes widen again somewhat, taking it all in.  "There is more at play here than Grol's plans it seems.....let's see if the dwarf knows anything when he awakens"

As Damian administers aid to the injured dwarf, Tagret looks to Bitenose asked "With Grol dead, how will you kin react?".

Whilst waiting for a reply, he proceeds to wipe his axe on Grol's body and recover his handaxes from the ground, and gives Saravena an inquiry look as she discovers what looks to some of Grol's loot "What did you find?"

"I am not sure," Saravena answers pulling out the sack from under the mattress. "I am hoping it will be answers."

Saravena opens the sack and looks inside before pulling out the contents.

With the aid administered to the dwarf from Damian, he begins to come around from his unconscious state.

"There will be infighting amongst the tribe," Bitenose says shrugging his shoulders. "They will all try to gain control over the tribe. It won't be easy. Meanwhile, as soon as the word reaches the other tribes, they will try to expand into this region. That will result in more deaths. But Targor Bloodsword will definitely have the advantage over the others, at least in my tribe. He leads a war band."

Saravena opens the sack to discover two-hundred and twenty silver pieces, one-hundred and sixty electrum pieces, three potions of healing and a folded piece of parchment.

"Well we have some coin and some potions, that is always nice to find," Saravena remarks then she pulls out the folded parchment. "And maybe some answers."

Saravena unfolds the parchment to examine its content if there is any.

Saravena sees that there is a sketch of a map of the surrounding area on the parchment. Near to the Sword Mounts is a large X marking a spot which has been labelled Wave Echo Cave. It seems who ever made the map is aware of the location of the lost fabled cave.

In the corner, the dwarf regains his senses and as he sits up you realise that you recognise the dwarf as Gundren Rockseeker. The very dwarf man who hired you to escort the wagonload of provisions to Phandalin.

Gundren sits against the wall for a moment taking in the scene before him. He sees the dead Grol, wolf, and doppelganger. Then he sees you all.

"What happened here?"

Damian speaks in dwarvish “Oh Gundren! I’m glad you’re safe. We came here looking for you.” Damian gives Gundren a heavy pat on his shoulders “We need to get you out of here.”

Turning to the group Damian “Hey guys it’s Gundren! I say we take this doppelgänger and gundren out of here before more goblins come.” 

Gundren nods his head, "Yes, it's best to get out of here. Though I think you might want to leave the doppelganger. It would only slow us down." With that he places a hand against the wall behind him to help himself climb to his feet. He turns to Saravena, "It looks like you've got my map. I would like that back if you wouldn't mind."

Bitenose turns to Damian, "I think we better get a move on. It won't take long before some hunting party or war band returns. Then we will be in real trouble."

"I agree it is best we leave swiftly but I disagree about leaving the doppelganger, it may still have answers to questions we have," Saravena hand the map back to Gundren then turns to Tagret. "Do you think you could carry that thing out with us now that its bound?"

"I am not sure it should come with us either...unless we can be sure that it is on any use to us it will only slow us down" and turns to the recovering dwarf "Gundren, do you know anything about this creature....was it involved in your questioning? Is it dangerous to let it live?" 

“Well if Bitenose think we should hurry, we should definitely do so. By the way this is Bitenose, Gundren he helped with rescue and I would like you to know I take responsibility for him.” Give Bitenose a good pat on the back, Damian will help who ever carries the doppelgänger if we bring it along.

"No," Gundren says. "I don't recognise that creature. However, this... Bitenose, I only remember to well."

He then glares at the goblin standing beside Damian. But Bitenose can only stand there looking guilty.

"At any rate, I can probably be of more use to you than that. If you want to know about that map, the location of the cave, and the plans of my brothers and I, I know that. This creature is probably just after the map. Whether for itself, or for its master. However, if we don't get a move on, that map could fall into the wrong hands yet again."

“Well Bitenose has turn a new life, Right?” Damian gives a soft smile to Bitenose before going back “Well if Gundren doesn’t think we should care the doppelgänger then we should leave it. I for one of any to get out of here before more guards show up.” 

"If we are leaving it here I am getting a sample first," Saravena says drawing a dagger while quickly making her way to the unconscious doppelganger. Saravena uses the dagger to make a small cut, deep enough to draw blood, on the bottom of the doppelganger's foot then uses one of her flasks to collect the blood. Once she has collected enough blood Saravena stoppers the flask, returns it to her bag, makes sure to grab the sack with the coins and potions, then makes her way towards the door. "Alright lets go." 

"As long as you keep paying me," Bitenose replies.

Grundren beings to storm off not too happy with the situation.

"If it's not coming with us, then it not staying alive either" and he quickly pulls his axe back of his shoulder and swings it down on the prone form, and he will keep swinging until he is sure that its dead - here are a few rolls - hopefully that should do the job

After finishing the task he wipes the blade down and says "Too much treachery already.....it's not smart to leave something that can change form behind, now that it has seen us....let's go - Bitenose come up to the front in case we come across your kin"  and with that Tagret leads the way back the way they came in

"A tad harsh there Tagret," Saravena remarks as they move. "I can understand the reasoning, it could have come for revenge and we would not even know, but maybe next you could not turn it into minced meat or at least give a little warning."

Saravena then falls back a little to try to converse with Grundren, "So do you truly believe you and your brothers found the Wave Echo Cave?"
