A dwarf opens the door and looks up at Kalgren. "Aye? Wot can I do fer yas?" It isn't a hostile greeting, more of a legitimate warm question. He's pretty burly, clearly easily able to handle himself, and probably protect his family. ...But then again, so would a carpenter. His auburn beard is braided quite intricately into three braids, and he's wearing a simple work outfit of brown trousers, and a white tunic.
At the sound of the door opening, Kalgren quickly rolled down his sleeve to hide the mark for the time being. This was going to be a unpleasant conversation as it is so he definitely did not want to add more to it that necessary.
'Evening, sir.'Kalgren gave the dwarf a nod and put on his most polite smile. 'My apologies for the interruption but I wanted to speak with you. It is concerning the recent string of disappearances in Drefeld. Do you have a moment?'
OOC: Kalgren will take great care to read the dwarf's body language/facial expressions throughout this conversation. Insight 11
The dwarf raises a brow and nods. "Aye. Come on in then. Name's Torbin." He turns and motions for Kalgren to enter the house. From the hallway it leads into, Kalgren can hear a she-dwarf talking with at least two other voices. He seems to be a serious, but affable, man.
Grell silently remains on the roof as the conversation begins below, his shining maul held at his side like a watchman's spear, his vision held fixed on the surrounding area.
Perception: 15 (Passive: 13)
As it stands right now, nothing unusual is seen... Although, in the quiet air... A strange sound can be heard. It's very brief, but something akin to a sucking sound... It came from...
right behind Grell.

Kalgren silently followed the dwarf into his home. When they got to a private moment, Kalgren spoke up: 'I won't beat around the bush, Torbin.' He hoped that cutting to the chase and addressing the dwarf by name would ease the tension somewhat. 'My colleagues and I have a theory that the disappearances occuring in Drefeld could be considered kidnappings and, more importantly,' he paused for dramatic effect, 'that your household is a potential target.'
Kalgren waited a moment for the severity of what he said to sink in before he continued. 'So my question for you, Torbin, are the following: do you know anyone who might harbour a grudge against the citizens of Drefeld? We have cause to believe said person is adapt at magic or has access to magical means, if that sparks any memory. Something related to this symbol.' He rolled up his sleeve to give Torbin a quick look at the carved symbol on his left arm before covering it up again.
OOC: do I need to make a second Insight check or does the previous result carry through? OOC 2: Oh no, Grell! :/

Upon hearing the strange noise, Grell slowly turns around, maul in hand.
And behind him, Grell will see two very strange creatures... with a third squeeeezing its way out of a small hole barely an inch wide! They look like pale, squishy serpents with large eyeless heads tipped with a beak... and a single arm with a talon emerging from the center of their chests. They silently stare at Grell, as if... observing him. Making no hostile movements just yet. Veins can be seen coursing through their white flesh.
The creatures appear to be about 4 feet long... which makes it a wonder how they can squeeze through that tiny hole!

From their stake out point, Zack peers into the growing darkness, trying to see anything moving. As his eyes fail him though, his ears begin to take over and he hears the various evening sounds come and go (Passive Perception: 19).

Zack (and Vigil for that matter) as they work around can see the light from Grell's cantrip'd maul on the roof... And they can see that *something* is with Grell, but the details are unclear.

Zack points out the light and the strange shape near Grell to Vigil. "We're in the wrong spot! Quickly!" And with that, Zack runs off towards Grell as fast as he can.
From his turned kneeling position, Grell does not move as the strange creatures sway and "stare" at him. These were undoubtedly the creatures they sought, he had to be careful. The Dragonborn slowly raises his shining maul, and gently, but firmly, taps the pommel back on to the roof. He hoped the sound would attract the attention of those below. Slowly, he repeated the tap, before beginning to rise into a standing position.
Vigil notices the shinning weapon that Grell is holding...and the shadowy figure in front of him. When Zack starts running over to rejoin the other, the tiefling follows short after, grabbing his scimitar as there is bound to be some action. Vigil grins in anticipation as the pair runs.
The dwarf raises a brow as he considers this before folding his arms. A defensive stance, but not an unwelcoming one. "...No. Everyone here is relatively on good terms. Nothing useful. Kalgren was about to ask some follow-up questions when something caught his attention. A loud tap came from the ceiling. He thought it was odd until he remembered that Grell had taken up watch on the roof. Perhaps the dragonborn merely shifted his weight and had put down his weapon. That seemed logical to Kalgren. Until the second tap came.
Kalgren focused back on the dwarf. 'Take your family and hide in the basement.' He said in a stern, authoritative voice. 'Cover up all cracks and entrances. Go!' Without waiting for a reply, Kalgren turned on his heels and marched out the door. He knew where Grell was and turned his attention to the roof. There, in the glow of Grell's hammer, he saw... Well, he did not know what he was looking at. The creatures looked serpentine but the beak and the singular, talon tipped arm threw him off. What was more disheartening was that Grell stood in front of them in some sort of stand-off, each side just glaring and sizing the other up.
'What now?' Kalgren whispered to Grell as loud as he dared, hoping he would not catch the attention of the creatures. He slowly reached for his crossbow, ready to take a shot should the situation escalate.

Torbin hears the tone. He grits his teeth, not necessarily inclined to obey blindly... But he is a family man, he goes to grab them (A wife and a young child) before fleeing into the basement as instructed. It seems he grabbed a warhammer as well. "Don't destroy my house if ya can help it, lad." He calls out, and Kalgren does manage to hear that just before stepping outside.
Meanwhile, for Grell on the roof, the three creatures let out a small chittering his amongst themselves. They slowly spread out, each one taking a position on either side of Grell, and the third wriggling its way up towards Grell's face. Seemingly... sniffing. Their flesh ripples gently. After a moment, the one in front of Grell moves away... Slithering to the edge of the roof and starting to climb down, using its talon as an anchor. Kalgren is suddenly keenly aware that it sees him.
As it drops onto the ground, Kalgren would then notice... the "tool mark" was not made by a tool at all. It was left by their talons.
And then Kalgren would notice the brief sound of something digging behind him, from under the ground. It would not be hard to determine that there was a fourth making its way up.

Grell remains still as the creepy creature seemingly takes a good whiff of him. Perhaps it was not interested in him, he ponders to himself as it turns and makes it's way off the roof. The Dragonborn hoped the other two members of the "team" had seen him standing on the roof with his shining maul because he didn't think that this situation was going to remain calm for long.
A thought struck Grell; these things did not appear to see, with all their slithering and sniffing. Slowly, he kneels once more, taking a piece of the roof tiling in hand, before suddenly throwing it hard towards the far-side of the roof, away from the side of the house that Kalgren was now standing. Grell hoped this may cause some confusion or distraction to allow him more breathing room to reach Kalgren.
At the very least, his grip on his maul tightened, and rage began to bubble inside, as the Gold Dragonborn stood once more.
Vigil was following Zack as they were coming up to the house whose roof Grell was standing on with the creature. Their weapons were drawn, ready to defend themselves and the family that inhabited the house.
Right, there goes my theory that someone made those markings. Kalgren thought when he saw one of the creatures's talons make the mark. Well, at least chicks dig scars.
He refocused his attention on the threat before and now also behind him. Let's reevaluate. Sharp talons: stay away from those. Beak: pointy so also avoid. No protection and hunt in a pack so their aim is to take down prey fast. No eyes so... Wait, no eyes?
An idea came to mind. He figured it was worth a shot. Kalgren lowered his crossbow and accessed his magic. He moved his hand in a quick motion and suddenly the spitting image of a halfling stood five feet to the side of the creature that was coming toward him. The illusionary halfling had his hands next to his head, thumbs in his ears and his tongue out in that classic taunt. If the creature wanted such an easy target, it would need to divert from its path. And if it doesn't respond to visual stimuli... Well, at least that's something we can work with.

The creature does, in fact, strike out at the illusion. Upon the talon passing through harmlessly, the creature screeches in frustration... It does not seem to understand spellcasting. It does, in fact, get fooled by the illusion as it keeps striking at it and growing more and more frustrated. The one behind Kalgren though... It lets out a much louder screech. Except it is about 6 foot long, and actually looks properly armored. A bony crest extends past the back of its head... and it seems to snap at the one fooled by the illusion, making it stop and refocus on Kalgren.
