Vigil’s first intent was to check out the tavern. Not only a place to drink your sorrows away, it was also a prime location to collect information. Plus, if the cart driver was right, that wizard ran the inn. Seemed like the most obvious spot to begin the investigation.
'Chauntea and Lathander.' Kalgren mumbled to himself as he approached the temple grounds. 'Agriculture and the dawn. Seems appropriate.' His mind wandered back to ancient scriptures he had to learn as a kid: he vaguely remembered something about Chauntea and Lathander being lovers but that was not something little Kalgren was interested in and it got quickly overshadowed by the theological pondering on how Lathander and Amaunator were related. Theological philosophy never was his strong point.
Focusing back on the here and now, Kalgren walked up to the main temple's door. 'Hello?' He asked standing at the entrance with a voice loud enough to carry through the building. 'Is anyone here?'
OOC: What time of day is it in Drefeld Village at the moment?
Vigil and Grell enter the inn, and they find a smattering of the villagefolk here inside. A couple goliaths, but mostly humans. The atmosphere is... something between normal and somber. Not nearly as much energy as you would think for such a small village. Behind the bar itself, a rather cute half-elf woman stands. She waves to the two newcomers and offers a smile. "Oh, hello! We don't often get visitors this far out!" She says, leading to just about everyone looking over to take a gander. The villagers all offer some level of acknowledgement before returning to what they were doing.
Meanwhile, Zack finds himself in front of the library. It looks to be a decently cozy place. Small, generally quiet. Upon stepping in, it is revealed to be really small. The first floor is crammed full of bookshelves, a lot of them empty. A table or a desk of some kind is nestled into a corner with a view of the door, where it is currently empty.
Kalgren would hear a minor kerfuffle as someone definitely hears him. After a moment, the door to the housing quarters opens, and out steps a tiefling with purple skin, horns tight to his skull and sweeping back, and wearing a set of robes that very much resemble Mulan monks. "Oh. My apologies, and may the sun watch over your path. How might I assist you, friend?" His voice is smooth and practiced.

Ignoring the stares of the other patrons, Grell beelines to the bar and the half-elf woman, placing his maul down next to a stool that he promptly takes. "Hello, fair lady," he says as he sits. "Grell has come to Drefeld for..." the Dragonborn holds his tongue, not wanting to arouse any worry to his presence, then continues "...uh, Grell is very hungry, what food do you serve?"
(ooc: weirdly my internet cut out as posting, think it double-posted!? :P )
Vigil walks over to the bar casually, tailing the dragonborn closely. If his plan had been to remain unnoticed, that plan flew right out of the window. Though the patrons didn't seem to mind his presence.
''I'll have whatever the big guy has as well. Plus an ale, if you don't mind." The tiefling quickly glanced around the room. Seems rather quiet for an inn at this time of day...he thought to himself. He turned his attention back to the woman behind the bar. "Also, you think you could point me in the direction of someone named Wulfa? Heard he apparently ran the inn."

'Ah, you must be the priest.' Kalgren straightened his back, an subconscious reflex from having dealt with many clerical authority figures. 'You're probably a busy man so I'll cut right to the chase. The name's Kalgren.' He fiddled a bit with the sun pendant around his neck to better show it to the tiefling. 'From the Church of Amaunator. Some of the higher-ups got word of the worrying string of disappearances in and around Drefeld so they sent me to check things out.'
Kalgren adopted a more casual posture to put the priest more at ease. 'I am at your disposal.'
OOC: if possible, I'd like to get a read on the priest when he replies - Insight 14
Zack would hear a commotion from upstairs before a man dressed in a blue public robe steps down. He's a young guy, no more than 20. "O-Oh! A visitor. You must be one of the investigators, yes?" He says, brushing the front of his robe off as he nods to himself. Zack mostly sees notebooks upon notebooks, nothing of seeming value right at this time.
In the inn, the half-elf smiles a bit. "Well, most of our stuff is wild-caught by our hunters and fishermen. Deer, elk, sometimes bulette if one gets too close. Plenty of greens from the farms, though a strong man like you needs the meat more, huh?" She cracks a smile and a wink before turning her attention to Vigil. "Oh, you two are the ones he sent for? Aye, Wulfa is my husband. He's probably at the library right now, working on some project or another. He fancies himself a wizard, but he has no magical talent to his name." She laughs. "I'm Elandar. I'm the one who actually owns the place, he just likes to claim he does."
Kalgren's straight-to-the-point introduction catches the priest off guard, but he nods. "Marigold. Yes, I am the priest for this temple, and I am all too familiar with the disappearances. ...Or should I say, deaths. The bodies don't always turn up, but there is no doubt that they've been made to pass on." He seems to be a straight-laced kind of guy. Concerned for his people, and not likely to say anything uncouth. "Are you alone, Kalgren?"

Zack nods in reply, "I am one of the investigators sent for. There are several others here in town that arrived with me, though they stopped at the inn and temple first.Zack. Zack Finn, investigator by trade. Could you perhaps give me some details as to what you wish for us to find? I'd like to get started as soon as possible... if you don't mind," Zack offers his hand to shake as he introduces himself. After which, he takes out his notebook and jots down any information he can glean from the young man.

Grell returns the half-elf's smile with a kind, fang-filled grin of his own, nodding at the mention of "meat". As she finishes speaking to Vigil, Grell raises his hand to grab her attention. "Grell would like a hearty meal, biggest you got if it pleases... plenty of meat" he says with another smile.
After this exchange, Grell will take a more focused look over the rest of the inn.
Vigil raised an eyebrow as a response. He didn’t expect her to be aware of the group’s arrival. Although, it didn’t really matter.
"Huh...Sounds like the other guy had the right idea. Zack, was it? Probably found your husband already. We’ll just have to wait for them to return here." He took the time to sit down on a stool. "In any case, name’s Vigil. You probably figured what we came here to do. Anything we should know?"

'I am a man of faith.' Kalgren replied with a mischievous smile.'I'm never alone.'
He caught himself lifting a hand to the eye patch covering his left eye but quickly changed the motion to raising his hands to the sky, fingers interlaced, and stretched until he stood on his tippy toes. It made him look relaxed and at ease but more importantly, it lifted his shirt a little to subtly show a dagger hanging from his belt. He did not trust the priest fully, not just yet.
'As a more practical answer to your question,' Kalgren continued as he looked around at the temple's architecture, 'I drove into town with three others. One of them fancies himself an investigator, so he'll probably be all up in your face soon enough. The others I can't tell, other than that they look like they could handle themselves in a fight.' Kalgren walked over a bit to the side, feigning interest in whatever it was that was there. It was just another way to put some distance between him and the priest.
'Someone named Wulfa paid for our trip.' He said. Kalgren glanced at the priest to see what reaction that name wrought. 'Any idea why he would do that?'
OOC: Will that last bit need another Insight check? If so: Insight 16
Wulfa takes Zack's hand and nods with a smile. "Yes, yes. It seems that whatever is causing the disappearances strikes by night, usually. They started with smaller farm animals down to the south, where we'd find the bones scattered about... Perfectly picked clean, with no sign of any kind of biting on the bones directly. And then later, I noticed a couple of the townsfolk further in had disappeared... We... have yet to find their bodies." He shakes his head. "I don't think there's any kind of banditry going on, because nothing was taken from the homes of those who disappeared. Just the people, and the animals." Wulfa taps his chin, brow furrowed. "...And there's usually markings in the area. On the walls or the fenceposts. Like something was clinging to the wall after climbing there. But it almost looks like it was done by tools. It is very strange."
Grell seems too distracted by his hunger to take in too many details around the inn, and Elandar giggles as she moves to head into the back. "I'll bring out your food here in just a bit, boys. Far as anything you need to know, I just know that two families have gone missing so far. I don't think the guards have found their bodies yet, but that captain is an idiot. So maybe he's just missed them."
It seems Marigold was actually wondering if he was a solo operative. Content with the answer, he smiles. "Wulfa is one of my friends. He's just as concerned about the deaths as I am, and I guess he scrounged up the money to bring you all here. I'm rather glad he did then. Despite how often he finds himself in his library most days, he does truly care for the people of the village, and won't stand idly by if he can help somehow. Bringing you in is the best way for him to help, I suppose."

Zack notes down everything that Wulpa says. "Any chance you can tell me where I can have a closer look at these tool markings? And was there any connection between the people taken, such as where they lived or occupation? It sounds like maybe they were used as food..." realising what he just said, he looks apologetically to Wulfa, "...ah sorry. Strange that there's no teeth marks on those bones you found, and then tool marks on the walls. It almost seems like two different modes of operation. Is there anyone else in town that I should talk to?"
Not noticing anything out of the ordinary with the others sat around the inn, Grell relaxes a little and turns to face Vigil next to him. "Nice place. A little quiet, but understandable. After we have eaten, if the others have not been here, Grell thinks we should go and find the homes of the missing families, and speak to this... Captain... Hmm?"
Vigil glances over to Grell and nods in acknowledgement. That captain, idiot or not, had to have some measure of information that could help the investigation.
’’Agreed. If anything, that captain could point us in the right direction. The best thing to do would be to go to where the latest disappearance occurred. That’s where the tracks would be the most fresh.’’
'Then I shall endeavour to speak with him next.' Kalgren said. He gave the priest a slight bow. 'Much obliged for your time, priest Marigold.'
Kalgren walked out the temple's front entrance but paused in the doorway. 'If you have need of me or the others, I do believe we shall be staying at the Blue Cask. Or just ask around town: at least two of us stand out in a crowd.'
With that final goodbye said, Kalgren began making his way back to the local inn to see what the others have been up to. The driver did think that Wulfa owned the inn so it was a good a place to start regardless.
"No connections that I can draw at least. They were farmhands, and one family were petty carpenters." Wulfa rubs the back of his head nervously. "No need to apologize. I can't confirm if we're dealing with men or monsters, so them being food is entirely in the realm of possibility..."
Wulfa draws up a quick map of Drefeld and places marks on the south side of the village, on the half of the village on the other side of the river that bisects the village. "These two houses here are the missing families. The ones down here..." He points to the farms below that, past a band of trees. "Had the missing animals. Goats, a couple cats, and soon bigger ones like the cows."
Elandar comes back with two big plates of steaming roasts, setting them in front of Grell and Vigil. "Here you are, boys. I'll take the liberty of opening a tab for you. 2 silver on it currently, and you can pay me whenever. Just do it before you leave the village again, aye?" She smiles warmly.
Marigold raises a hand. "If you find the bodies, please endeavor to at least bring something back to allow for the funeral rites properly. I'll be here generally, or helping Wulfa in his library. I use his notes for research sometimes." With that, the tiefling bows and allows Kalgren to leave.
Kalgren can then find himself in the inn, and sees Grell and Vigil up at the bar with the half-elf tending to them.
