Vigil would start by examining the window where there are markings. Are there signs of breaking and entering? (I imagine so.) If there are, he would then attempt to enter the house.
(Investigation check.)

Kalgren had a sly grin on his face as he watched the two guardsmen fall for his ruse and storm off. He waited a moment for them to be out of earshot before he called out to the others.
'Going by how eager they were in storming off, I'd say you have a couple of minutes before the jig is up.' Kalgren said to the other three.
'Do be quick about it. After all,'he smirked, pointing at his cheek, 'I am in need of medical attention.'
For his part, Kalgren focused his attention on what he knew best: people. He looked around the house, trying to get a feel for who and what kind of people lived here.
OOC: if that last part needs an Investigation check: 4 Well... he tried...
Keeping back as the charade plays out, Grell strides forwards as the guards run out of sight, nodding at Kalgren, impressed. “Grell would be glad to help you out further...” he says with a wink, as he spins his maul around in his hands.
As at least Kalgren and Vigil go towards the house, Grell takes a moment, turning in a full circle on the spot, looking about the area surrounding them.
Perception: 7
(ooc: He’s looking about the area, probably less about the house and more about it’s immediate surroundings, especially the forest, etc)
Zack follows the path of markings from the windows, that he assumes was the entry point, and away up into the rafters. He carefully studies the markings and tries to work out the creature's way of egress from the crime scene (Investigation: 11).

Grell doesn't see anything too out of the ordinary. The narrator feels bad that Grell seems to keep rolling low, and instead uses Grell's Passive Perception. Grell sees little trails in the dirt path that seem unusual, just on the corners of his vision since he was focused more on the background. They look... quite strange. Like many serpents had slithered their way though the dirt up towards the house.
Zack follows the path of markings from the windows, that he assumes was the entry point, and away up into the rafters. He carefully studies the markings and tries to work out the creature's way of egress from the crime scene (Investigation: 11).
Zack does not see means of entry... But there does seem to be a small gap in the stone and the window, no more than an inch wide. Was that a natural hole, or did something make it?

It seems this particular family were petty carpenters. A detail Grell and Vigil would notice as well, since they were explicitly told about the carpenter family by Elandar. They seemed to be decently tidy. Everything has its place, though the dining room table and chairs are disturbed and knocked over. Clearly a struggle happened here. (For that detail, I'm tossing it in for free via passive investigation)
Going through the rest of the house... Parents, 3 kids, at least one son. The kids shared a bedroom.
Zack moves over to look closer at the small hole (Investigation: 11), and then moves on to find the culprit's path away from the house.
The hole seemed to have been... widened. As if something was stuck in an existing crack to make it. Moving on to trying to find the path away from the house... (Investigation or Survival check, your choice)
As Grell notices the strange tracks, he turns to properly look at them, his eyes following the path they make through the dirt and towards the house.
(ooc: @DM, what happens to them at the house? Where do they reach the house, etc?)
The Gold Dragonborn kneels rather carefully next to the trail, his vision tracking it back the way it came.
(ooc: @DM, where can Grell see the tracks / slither-trail coming from?)
The trails seem to stop right at the wall... As if whatever made it then began climbing the wall. While Grell can in fact see where the slither-trail came from, he knows he'll have to shift to "hunter mode" as it were to actively follow them. (Survival check)

Nothing screaming "I smashed my way in here" or anything. But you too can confirm that yes, the whole was widened by something, rather than being natural... Little shavings that clearly are not stone can be seen inside the hole)

Grell stands and turns to the others as they continue their own investigations, holding a might hand and pointing the way the trail leads off. “Whatever happened here, that is clearly the way whatever it was cane from...”.
He looks back to the trail, almost talking to himself, “... we should probably follow it, before it gets too dark...”

Vigil moves inside the house to further investigate. He notices the signs of a struggle in the dinning room. Vigil would look for clues that indicate whether the culprit was injured in said struggle or if he left something behind that would help identify the nature of the agressor.
'Family of five. Parents, three kids.' Kalgren muttered. His face fell solemn. 'Whatever took them, they at least put up a fight.'
He caught himself making a holy gesture, partially out of respect for the deceased and partially out of reflex. Kalgren let it happen. He stuck his head out the door to check the outside.
'Not sure how much longer we have until the guards return.' He said to the others. 'So you might want to hurry it up.' He then took up position outside the house to keep a lookout. It would look bad if the guards returned and he was still there, let alone that three others were what appeared to be ransacking the house.
Kalgren spotten Zack moving away from the house. 'Where are you heading off to?' He asked.
OOC: struggling with not turning Kalgren into a hardboiled film noir detective right now

Small traces of slime can be seen around two of the chairs. Where the other chairs are, the slime seems to have been trailed out by whatever it was, like they were... giant snails or slugs or something. The trails can be traced for a few feet before fading in the general direction of the door.
Zack follows the path away from the house (Investigation: 15).
Much larger trails, indicating at least 5 different slitherers can be seen in the dirt... how the guards didn't notice these trails is mystery in and of itself. Maybe they were lazy. They loop around and head back towards where Grell is walking... tracing the small slithers.

Grell can clearly and fully follow the trails down towards the forest, towards the cleared out farmlands, but sticking to the perimeter of it, remaining in the tree cover. Grell is able to notice the much larger trails as well, when they converge about 10 feet into the underbrush.

Grell motions to anyone that's nearby, or interested, to the direction of these slithery trails. "What are we thinking? Grell thinks it is worth following, see if we can find where they lead."
Without waiting for too much of answer, but hoping the others heard and see him move, he begins to slowly follow the trails like a tracker dog absentmindedly following some prey by scent, accept the large Gold Dragonborn keeps his wits on a sharp edge while tracking where these slithers go...
Vigil kneels down and picks up some of the slime with his fingers. He assesses the substance's viscosity and smell. Clearly more going on than just kidnappings, he thinks to himself. This proved that something wicked was afoot. Fey?...unlikely. Fiends?...not impossible. My money would be more on necromancy, though. With what information he can gather, the tiefling attempts to recall knowledge he has acquired over years of hunting creatures of the night.
(Trying to see if I know a creature (Fey, Fiend or Undead) that produces this sort of slime. What sort of roll would it be? I would get advantage to it though, because of Hunter's Bane.)
Kalgren keeps his eyes and ears open, ready to notify the others should the guardsmen return. Unless the others decide collectively to move away from the house, in which case he will follow.
Zack, seeing the slimy path and Grell walking off to follow it, turns and whistles to gather the attention of the others and follow Grell into the forest. He waits for the others, but keeps an eye on Grell to ensure he doesn't go too far off into the jaws of whatever assailed the house.
