Vigil kneels down and picks up some of the slime with his fingers. He assesses the substance's viscosity and smell. Clearly more going on than just kidnappings, he thinks to himself. This proved that something wicked was afoot. Fey?...unlikely. Fiends?...not impossible. My money would be more on necromancy, though. With what information he can gather, the tiefling attempts to recall knowledge he has acquired over years of hunting creatures of the night.
(Trying to see if I know a creature (Fey, Fiend or Undead) that produces this sort of slime. What sort of roll would it be? I would get advantage to it though, because of Hunter's Bane.)
(Arcana check, with advantage since you are specifically going for the ones that give you that advantage.)
Zack, seeing the slimy path and Grell walking off to follow it, turns and whistles to gather the attention of the others and follow Grell into the forest. He waits for the others, but keeps an eye on Grell to ensure he doesn't go too far off into the jaws of whatever assailed the house.
Kalgren keeps his eyes and ears open, ready to notify the others should the guardsmen return. Unless the others decide collectively to move away from the house, in which case he will follow.
The guards don't seem to be coming back as of yet, but Zack's whistle would catch Kalgren's attention as the wizard moves to follow Grell.
Grell motions to anyone that's nearby, or interested, to the direction of these slithery trails. "What are we thinking? Grell thinks it is worth following, see if we can find where they lead."
Without waiting for too much of answer, but hoping the others heard and see him move, he begins to slowly follow the trails like a tracker dog absentmindedly following some prey by scent, accept the large Gold Dragonborn keeps his wits on a sharp edge while tracking where these slithers go...
(give me another survival check due to the troubles of the forest ground making it a bit harder to follow the trail.)

Grell looks confused as he loses the trail, thinking to himself Hmm, they must have disappeared... He then looks around for the slithery tracks he was following, and can't find those either. Oh...
Kalgren walked up to Vigil. He didn't know why but he seemed to have a favourable disposition towards the tiefling. Perhaps it was the exotic look of red skin. Maybe it was the horns and tail. Or it could just be that he fit the image of a devil that Kalgren had so often behold when the church went out proselytizing.
At least he seemed to have a better grasp on what the four of them were doing here. 'What've you got?'Kalgren asked Vigil as he watched the tiefling drag a finger through some slime.
Grell nods to Zack, and they both begin looking to pick up the trail.
"Hmm... Grell fears that we have lost it further back the way we came...?"
(ooc: can we backtrack the way we came, or are we actually now lost in the woods!? :) Also, did any of the others follow, or ya'll still in the house?)
There are SEVERAL monsters Vigil can think of that would produce slime, directly or via Ooze minions. However, none of those monsters are Small, or tend to slither... or seemingly grow larger after a victim is claimed. The details just don't line up very well.

(everyone followed is how I read it. and yes, you can backtrack very easily, I'm not gonna let you all get lost *yet* when you haven't even seen the monsters!)
Zack catches up with Grell, who is now looking around confused. "Let me have a try, hopefully we can pick up the trail again." (Survival: 4).
Zack, try as he might, is unable to pick up the trail again either. ...But perhaps if Grell and Zack Help each other.
(aka Zack, Help Grell so he gets advantage :P Cause the dice roll is a bit ridiculous now! lol)

Zack sits down a moment, recapping what he's found so far. "Perhaps we're looking at this in entirely the wrong way, Grell. How about we try figuring this out together?" (Helping Grell for Survival check)
Vigil stood back up and wiped his fingers clean on his side. He couldn’t think of a creature that fitted the bill for this case and it irritated him.
Vigil heard Kalgren walk up to him and question him. The tiefling didn’t really know what to make of him. Usually, he didn’t really bother engaging with men of faith. But this one, Vigil found amusing. He could have made a fine recruit, he thought.
"Nothing interesting. Whatever came in here isn’t particularly clean, he says as he shows the slime trail. But that’s not much to go off of. Maybe the others will have better luck."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(ooc: Sounds good! Here's to some good rolls!!)
Grell ponders for a moment and then nods in agreement with Zack. The two of them comb the area together, looking to pick up and follow the trail once more...

Kalgren glanced at the traces of slime. 'Yeah... yeah, that looks nasty.'He decided. 'Like some kind of giant slug crawled through here.'
He straightened his back. 'Come on, let's go meet up back with the others and see what they found.'
Kalgren left the house for the time being and caught up with Grell and Zack who seemed to be busy searching through the underbrush. 'Family of five missing and looks like a bunch of slugs held a party in there.' He pointed with his thumb back at the house behind him. He knelt down to pick up a pebble and casted a Light on it. Kalgren could see in the dark, a trait he was ever so thankful for, but it turned everything into a bland shade of grey. His mind jumped to some "light in the darkness" proverbs as he held the shining pebble in the palm of his hand. 'What have you found?' He asked the intrepid duo.

Survival: 18
The trail is repicked up, with the glistening trail of slime that seemed to pick up again. It veers off to the north again. Seemingly towards the river that bisects the town!

(ooc: apologies, I thought we were waiting for more scene setting, but I’ll initiate things :P )
Grell continues to follow the tracks, coming to the river. The Dragonborn slows and then stops, looking around the river and seemingly sniffing the air.
As he follows Grell, Zack gets some goop on a finger & investigates it closely. Sniffing it, feeling it between his finger & thumb - as he tries to see if he can think of any creatures he’s read about in the past (Investigation: 18). Occasionally he looks around to follow the trail & see where Grell is.
Kalgren did not get a reply back on his question. 'Rude.' He thought to himself, but he shrugged it off and followed the others along the tracks they had found. He kept the pebble in his hand at eye level to illuminate as much as possible of the surrounding area.

Grell is not able to tell where the trail went and ended. It seems to diverge into 5 different trails, but then they just... disappear. No sign of them. No signs of disturbance implying flight, just... disappearing into the ground. The river is bubbling along down from the mountain, for all the world looking like a peaceful spring stream. The town is to the south-east of where you are currently, and easily seen from the river bank.

based on the consistency of the goo, it does not seem to be a creature that Zack is familiar with. But compared to the slime from the house, it seems to be deteriorating quicker in the open air, and hardening a bit.

It appears to be breaking down in the outside air much quicker than I expected." He wipes his hands and pulls out his notebook, jotting down several things before turning to Vigil and Kalgren, "Sorry. I was engrossed in this. What did you find in the house?"
