Olwer crouches to help the man up from his knees. He whispers in the man's ear,
"Better fill us in quickly before the tortle screws this up out of ignorance and nervousness. His shell rattled the whole way here."
the whisper was just that-a whisper not meant for other PCs to hear. Sorry to play off your guy that way, OddLot, but I'm worried someone will give away the game before the guy has a chance to blurt out information. I'm hoping my 22 deception roll was enough to keep him talking, since he seems near panic now.
If the others are walking towards town with him, Genesh will remain totally silent and seek to speed up his pace in order to take point to scout just ahead of the group walking well in advance of the others as they question the man. Should the others decide to remain where they are Genesh will go on and head to town alone.
Irena and Genesh begin walking about the trail back, finding nothing so sinster as a trap or intriguing as a clue. Genesh, satisifed by the conclusion of the trail, as well as the possibility of walking and talking, sets out back on the path back to town, now well treaded by multiple bodies running over in, including a bear.
Olwer and Elisha are not so fruitful in their endeavors. Elisha is positive that the man just seems really confused. He's completely sure that Olwer is telling him the truth, he just has no idea what he's talking about.
He says he was just drunk and fighting and then got kidnapped and asked about some "stupid animals" before having the snot beat out of him and stuffed back in the sack. Then they dropped him and he fell asleep for awhile before you dropped him.
After some time, you realize thats all hes got so far as the kidnapping. He repeats what happened the night of the tavern as Catherine described it, minus a few details about the world and plus a few negative details about John. You sense they are mostly false, as even he doesn't appear to believe them.
Then he casually mentions the only possibly useful information you've heard from him the whole time you've been listening, without even thinking about it.
John is staying at Tyler's shop.
He know this because they are really good friends. Even though Chris doesn't like John, Chris is always going to Tyler's, "so its been kind of tense there lately."
Once back at the town Genesh will head straight for the remains of the burn-out-tavern to see who is about (if anyone), what they are doing, and the progress of the clean-up of the area in general.
Back in town, Olwer tells Genesh "I'll help Chris and catch up with you later. Thanks for your excellent tracking!"
The bard then claps Chris on the back and says "Thanks for explaining what happened to you. Now I'd better fill you in now, and clear up your confusion. Catherine was kidnapped, too. Don't worry---she's safe. But the guards took her, as I had said earlier. Our party tracked the ones who took you and confronted them. They agreed to drop you off. We found you in the bag before anything worse happened to you. There are bears out in those woods, and I hear maybe more dangerous creatures..."
He indicates the guard station.
"I'll accompany you so a witness can back up your account."
Along the way, if Chris agrees to go and let Olwer go with him,
the bard mentions his present lodgings. "My apologies for taking such liberties, but it seemed the best thing to do under the circumstances. We needed to search the place for clues about your disappearance."
1:30 AM Genesh, Olwer, Elisha, & Irenia return to the village with Chris.
1:35 AM The group is at the light post, just before the second set of shops, in the middle of town.
Olwer thanks Genesh, and Olwer and Elisha escort Chris to the guard station. He thanks everyone for rescuing him, and is scared of whatever beast Olwer describes.
1:36 AM
Olwer, Elisha and Chris walk into the guard house...
In the guard house, you see that the Guards have let Catherine go. They immediately try to arrest Chris, and Olwer intervenes. They still insists that he is more guilty than he's admitting, but they wave it off...
...until he mentions, “You probably haven't even ASKED John if he's guilty have you?”
The guard says they thought John left town.
“Oh did he? Well that's not suspicious AT ALL, did you ever check if he came back?”
The guard and guard captain look at each other, and say they don't actually know where he's been staying.
The whole room turns to Chris, who obviously repeats that John is at Tyler's, and there's a pause.
The guards know that when they get there, they can arrest him and solve the mystery. They know you are also trying to solve the mystery, and would need credit if you were there before them.
“Its just a matter of who gets to Tyler's first then isn't it?” the guard captain grins in a competitive tone.
1:36 AM
Genesh continues on towards the tavern, several shops down the street from them...
At the former remains of the burned out tavern, the construction workers have made quiet some headway. At last you saw it, the remains had been cleared and a foundation laid. Quiet noticeably, the basement was filled, and the walls cleared of all their wood. Now, not much has changed beyond the setting of subfloor, but the workers appeared to have invited a third man to their crew. By the look of how he's directing the workflow, he's clearly some kind of supervisory council, as well as a mason.
From his table, there are charts and diagrams set up to visually display the outline of the future tavern. As he points and speaks, they follow and learn where to lay bricks according to where the new: walls, windows, and doorways should be. When they actually start laying the bricks, he starts making more of them rapidly at a small pottery station.
((Genesh can see this the entire time, and arrives within speaking distance just as they split up for their separate work.))
The tortle as the men split up for their separate workup Genesh makes his way towards the third man of the crew, the one directing the workflow, and politely introduces himself, "good day to you good sir, I'm Genesh. I hope you mind my observing as I am fascinated with the art of construction and you either seem to be either very skilled or very organized. If I may ask, do you plan to just recreate the old structure along the same lines as the original or are you looking to do something different entirely? I heard tell the place went up like a tinderbox, strange that this time of year. Did any of the inventory survive in the cellar... a keg or two of stout, perhaps?"The tortle inquired.
If Chris is willing Elisha would like to sit and talk with him
"Chris may I ask you a few questions? Can you tell me all that you remember about the night of the fight and the inn burning down? How did you end up kidnapped and stuffed into a bag, have you ever seen the men that kidnapped you before? Also, one last question: Did you overhear any of the conversations that the men had while you where their captive?"

(Genesh & Irenia heard the same dialog, at the same time. You walk up within talking distance just as they split to work in separate groups.)
1:37 PM
Genesh & Irenia begin to speak with the Mason before seeing Olwer, The Guard, and The Guard Captain bolting out of the Guard house towards the back of town. He had just enough time to answer Genesh's questions before the distraction, explaining that the floor plan had been changed quiet a bit, and that no, nothing of value remained that the innkeeper hadn't taken.
Arriving at about the same time, Olwer and the Guard captain struggle to pull open Tyler's shop door as the thin bearded man steps out of the door that's supposed to push in. The two rush passed the owner and shout around for John to show himself, and he does. The Guards immediately tackle him and begin to restrain his arms, trying to drag him out of the shop before Tyler hits the guard over the head with a stick. The two get into a fight and the guard captain drops Tyler who tries to scurry away, hands tied behind his back, by wiggling across the floor towards the door. Olwer stands in front of him with a "Where you going?" smirk, before the other three tumble into him dragging all five bodies into a small brawl in the doorway of the shop.
1:37 PM
Back at the Guard house, Elisha asks Chris for a little more information, and he gladly agrees seeing that he hasn't been arrested...
He once again explains the story pretty much shot for shot from how Catherine saw it. He doesn't admit that he was crying, he adds that John was being really mean to him "for no reason" and he fails to mention being so drunk he couldn't walk home-possibly because he doesn't admit that he was that drunk and possibly because he doesn't remember due to being that drunk. In a similar way, he doesn't remember being kidnapped, which he says must have happened while he was sleeping because he "totally could have fought them off if they didn't catch him by surprise."
On the last question he mentions something worthwhile, he says that they were speaking common for the most part when talking to him but switched to a weird language he'd only heard the Elves seldom use when speaking to each other. (This could be Sylvan, Elvish, or Druidic, it isn't clear and he doesn't know the difference between the three.)
The tortle totally ignored the Olwer and the Guard captain distraction not at all interested in it feeling that the bard had everything well in hand and wouldn't have need of or want any assistance. Genesh turned his attention back to the Mason and asked, "oh, so the floor plan has been changed a lot then, interesting. In what way, what are the changes you're been instructed to make, or were you instructed to make them, or is that something you decided all on your own? Either way, what is the reasoning for the extensive changes?"
Genesh seemed very interested in the old building (structure) and the new one in the process of being built in its place. Could be out of simple curiosity or it could be that the tortle suspected there was something more to it all and wanted to take a closer look into the matter...
The mason explains that there was in fact a much more complex pattern suggested for said floor plan. Curiously so because he did not imagine that the Innkeeper was any kind of astrologist, but he insisted that the new Chimney would have its back facing North with its front facing South. He also requested that the windows would be the same but in the East and West with respect to right and left. The cellar is gone, and the fireplace will be extraordinarily large at the South back of the room, with the bar taking up the entire right\East side. The left\west side has been left entirely open, probably for tables to come later, and there is to be a single door way at the South Entrance. Finally, to the right of the door, a ladder to two rooms on the second floor, will behind the end of the bar.
"There is also a shed to be built in the back, of which the door will be iron. It is to be blessed, and have several hidden locking mechanisms."
The men are laying the bricks for the general tavern now, and he explains that the shed is to be constructed when a priest is more readily available. He has been paid a great amount of money to wait for such time, which is why there is a hurry to build his lodgings for the week or so it will probably take for such a priest to arrive.
The tortle listened closely to the mason in fascination as the man went into some detail about the new floorplan for the inn being rebuilt. Genesh mulled over what was being said in an attempt to recall Arcana18 anything he might know, have read, or have heard that might relate in some way to any of the details and descriptions provided.
The proposed new layout for an inn seemed rather peculiar to Genesh but then he was not an expert in inns and taverns. It did seem a bit astrological but then perhaps the innkeeper dabbled in astrology or just a wee-bit eccentric. The tortle inquired further and asked the mason, "I've never heard tell of inn worth its sault not having a cellar to store the necessities required by such a business. Where is the meat, vegetables, and wine, etc. that they would serve guests to be stored? The shed perhaps but such things do not store well above ground, a cellar maintains a much better and cooler environment and why would a priest be necessary to bless a storage shed with hidden locking mechanisms?"It sounded to Genesh the shed might be to keep something or someone trapped inside.
The more the tortle thought about it, the more that it did not make any sense at all. The structure sounded more like a shrine of some sort than an inn and continued to speak to the mason, "you know, I was trained at a monastic order dedicated to the Azuth, a deity of wizards, knowledge, and magic. Perhaps I could be of some assistance? Do you know what sort of priest to what diety has been summoned that the innkeeper awaits his arrival?"The idea of a simple ladder for guests to climb to their rooms, just two also seemed odd to the tortle, perhaps the innkeeper didn't want to waste space on a stairway.
Irenia cocked an eyebrow at the shed as well as she watched the mason. After learning of the floorplans, she shook her head and turned to the mason. "This ladder to the second floor where there's only two rooms? Two rooms seem quite small for something to accommodate guests. What happens if there are three parties who want to stay the night Or is this for the owner and someone else?"

I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
Genesh is able to recall that temples are built in such a fashion to recognize a deity of the Sun or Moon. In this specific instance, it appears the grandest fixture is to be pointed South, leading you to believe it is likely a deity of the sun which is intended to be praised. Or the innkeeper is indeed eccentric.
The mason replies that the supplies will likely be kept at the bar, as the innkeeper no longer intends to sell anything but alcohol and well salted meats. Previously, the owner had offered full meals and beds for travelers, but that appears to be no longer the case. The beds upstairs are for the innkeeper, the mason temporarily until the shed is finished, and the priest who will be staying on for quiet awhile longer.
With the shed, the Mason takes a much darker tone. He does not reveal the intended contents, but explains that there will be priest of the "New Ways of Man" specifically intended to cast a blessing ward to fend off Fey creatures. He explains that he has much work to do, and must get back to it. He uneasily begins to reform new bricks with his back turned to you.
Olwer and the Guards spill out onto the main street. The cobblestones provide a rough landing as several limbs and body parts crash hard into the shaped rock floor. You all stand uneasily, and the guard grabs John while the captain pushed Tyler back inside his shop. They leave Olwer to puzzle at the nonsense that just took place for a moment.
"He's under arrest!"The captain loudly declared to everyone around (nobody) as they headed back to the guard station.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Olwer walks toward the tavern construction site and pauses in the street long enough to point at the nearest ally in sight and send a whispered magical message
"John arrested, Tyler not, something seems off about all this... I've gone to the guard shop."
Then he heads off between two buildings and takes a back route , off the street, sneaking to the guard shop.

Genesh turns to Irenia and shares his thoughts and says, "I seem to recall that temples are built in such a fashion to recognize a deity of the Sun or Moon. In this specific instance, it appears the grandest fixture is to be pointed South thus it is likely a deity of the sun which is intended to be praised."
The tortle upon hearing the 'New Ways of Man' being mentioned paused to reflect upon the faith Religion16 trying to recall anything that he might have read or heard about such an order. Genesh once more turned his gaze towards Irenia, "do you think as I that there is much more at play here than a simple fire? It is apparent that the inn is not being rebuilt to function as an inn but as some sort of shrine. But it seems as if there is an attempt to pretend that the new structure will function as a simple tavern but even that is doubtful. Do you have thoughts or observations to offer Irenia? I think there might be something roaming free in the woods, some sort of fey creature and the new structure is either to worship or imprison it."
Genesh politely thanked the mason for his time and apologized for disturbing his labors. Unless Irenia has any suggestions or something to say or to offer, etc. The tortle will wander off deeper into the town thinking that since the house in which they had spent the night is no longer an option with the weather such as it is Genesh thought it would be prudent to seek out Perception15 new accommodations or some sort of shelter. Be it a barn or shed... even renting a room in a private residence if possible.

Olwer, the brawl
Olwer tries to extricate himself from the dustup so that he can go and see if the guards outside have John under control and in custody.
The tortle listened closely to the mason in fascination as the man went into some detail about the new floorplan for the inn being rebuilt. Genesh mulled over what was being said in an attempt to recall Arcana 18 anything he might know, have read, or have heard that might relate in some way to any of the details and descriptions provided.

"He's under arrest!" The captain loudly declared to everyone around (nobody) as they headed back to the guard station.

The tortle upon hearing the 'New Ways of Man' being mentioned paused to reflect upon the faith Religion 16 trying to recall anything that he might have read or heard about such an order.
The tortle will wander off deeper into the town thinking that since the house in which they had spent the night is no longer an option with the weather such as it is Genesh thought it would be prudent to seek out Perception 15 new accommodations or some sort of shelter. Be it a barn or shed... even renting a room in a private residence if possible.
