When Lia returns, Robwin praises her great work, and then recounts what she saw to Rinn. ”The lights look like Will-o’-Wisps. Three of them. They’re tormenting creatures caught in a pit trap!... At least one of the creatures - a hobgoblin I think - is still alive now”, he says. As he does so his eyes flit back and forth as if he’s thinking.
“What time is it? Should we wake the others?... ..I’m torn. Part of me wants to wade in to help their poor victim. Or should we leave well alone?...”.
Either way, while he’s hunkered down next to his Elf-brother, he casts mage armor on himself, which also activates his Arcane Ward. If Rinn was looking particularly closely, he might notice that Robwin’s ward looks stronger than it has before ((+12hp)), before it fades to be an almost invisible shimmer around him.
(DM Question - how far through the long rest is everyone? Rinn was going last watch, so I'm guessing it'd be close to their 8 hours for longs rest. Also were those wisps in amongst the trees or are they in a clearing?)
Rinn nods, "I'm not sure. I've not had many good encounters with hobgoblins, but then we've made unlikely friends with these goblins," he shrugs. "Perhaps I can move up to get a closer look. I can get a decently far enough shot now with this," he holds up his longbow, "So wouldn't need to be entirely close in case of trouble. I'll move up. If everyone has rested enough, wake them, otherwise, maybe just leave them. Perhaps I should take your pet with me too? Just in case trouble arises and I can get word to you quickly."
((OOC: @DM - We all know the extra time Robwin spent in bestiary studies is paying off... but how much should we assume he knows about the Wisps (and the other creatures)? Everything in the monster manual entry?
And are Rinn and Robwin the only ones that have completed their long rest?))
(( OOC: Assume Robwin would know the basic description. I look at the monster manual descriptions as written by someone with an academic, cultural, political and religious skew. Not all Orcs are evil, but you wouldn't know that from the bestiary. Robwin, Rinn, Ikki, Eli would definitely be good to go. If Wolfsong or TT didn't take first or second watch, they would be good to go. Put first watch on Blaire or Ikki and second on Eli. Depends on how the party wants to play it. ))
((OOC: ok great that makes sense. From memory I think you can break a long rest with walking/fighting/etc by up to an hour anyway before you lose all the benefits. I might be wrong though!))
Robwin grasps Rinn’s arm and says, “Whoa there! That’s suicide!... That’s what those things do.. ..They lure people into danger, into traps!..... If we head that way, we have to wake the others!”.
Assuming Wolfsong hasn’t taken a watch, Robwin would attempt to wake him by casting the cantrip message, saying, “Wolfsong, wake up! Keep quiet. Rinn and I see Will-o’-Wisps a mile out. Get over here...”....
((OOC: long rest - it's something like six hours sleep and two hours other activities; not combat. That's why I'm saying Wolfsong and TT would be okay now if they didn't take a watch.
You crazy cool Elf, Half-Elf and monks get that four hours long rest...
... (jk) Ha! Back in my day you just got eaten by a black dragon and died; roll a new character! (jk) ... ))
At the sound of Robwin’s voice in his ear Wolfsong’s eyes shoot open and he draws his quarterstaff, holding it in a defensive stance as he scans the area for threats. When he sees nothing Wolfsong relaxes slightly and gets to his feet.
“Are they heading this way? Have you awoken the others?” Wolfsong questions as he makes his way towards Robwin and Rinn readying himself for combat.
(( OOC: Meta - in my AU of D&D 5e, a Half-Elf has either an elven soul or a human soul. Therefore the probability of gaining the reverie trait is fifty percent. Of course, PCs would always be on the up side of that probability. They are the exceptional of the universe. - They may fail or die, of couse, but they are the hero. - Each Half-Elf NPC would have the same probability. This comes from lore built out in fantasy writing and supported in Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes (MToF). It turns out though that it is not strictly "by the book". I didn't recall this. I searched it out this past evening while waiting for a computer BIOS restore to complete. Anyway, yes, in my games, a PC/NPC Half-Elf like Eli or Sarah have the reverie trance state and have the past life dream experience in early childhood (@DM's playground). Of course, an Elf approaching a century of life has fewer and fewer remembrance dreams and retains less of the details while waking. The same is true for a Half-Elf as the approach their twenties. ))
(( OOC: Meta - 3e d&d rules used monk meditation to cut long rest requirements in half. Apparently, I liked that aspect so much, I ignored that it was lost somewhere in time. Again a few PM questions and a catastrophic failure prompted me to poke what I knew. In my AU of D&D 5e, a monk may explicitly choose 4 hours meditation instead of a long rest provided they aren't significantly injured (under half their max HP), same as Reverie. ))

Now back to the very early morning at the southwestern boarder of the Neverwinter Wood. Rinn, an hour into the third and last watch of the night, noticed some strange lights about a mile north of the party's camp. It didn't appear to be moving and wasn't quite right for a natural flame. Waking Robwin, he shared his concern. They sent Lia, Robwin's owl familiar, to investigate. An ogre, three hobgoblin, stirges and will O' whips in conflict around and within a pit trap. It appears three will O' whips, one hobgoblin and a handful of stirge yet survive. The hobgoblin is of interest to Robwin but it may be safer to wait out the pre-dawn twilight only a couple hours away. While Rinn seems eager to scout it out, Robwin is a bit more wary. With an abundance of caution, Robwin began to wake the party members he is sure are well rested. Leaving the others to their slumber. Reaching out magically to wake Wolfsong and TT.))

((OOC: loving the game. Love all the extra lore around half elf’s and monks. And I prefer your rules and ideas about long rest and trance etc. Happy with that))
Robwin hears Wolfsong’s reply and turns to see him approach. “No, they don’t know we’re here... The Wisps are tormenting creatures caught in a spike trap. One hobgoblin yet lives... ... I hate to leave a creature to die at the hands of another, but approaching Wisps in the dark is dangerous: they can blink out, and they are FAST!!”, he says quietly.
”I’ve called TT awake too, I think I can hear her stiring... ..We’re not in immediate danger but wanted your thoughts on what to do?”.
TT wakes, not with a start. Receiving messages while sleeping is not a new thing for her. As she opens hers eyes and sees Robwin and Lia quietly talking with Wolfsong she will slowly get to her feet and join in. "Did I hear you right, we're in danger from some Will'o Wisps?"
"Keep observing them for now," Wolfsong answers. "Once everyone is awake we can decide to hunt or not. As for the hobgoblin, the hunt has turned against it, there is nothing we can do except learn from it mistake. When we move keep an eye out for traps less you become the next target for the wisps."
Robwin nods while squinting out towards the faint lights in the distance, “I think I agree with that. Thank you for your perspective Wolfsong... ...TT? Rinn? That okay?.... I’m sorry for waking you all. Have you had enough rest? It’ll be light in a while but you could get your heads down again if need be. Rinn Lia and I will be up anyway, and can keep an eye on them”.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rinn nods, though a little dejected in being held back some. He grins though as Robwin says that they will move up, and he instantly jumps down from his tree and slinks off towards the wisps, moving slowly and keeping an eye out for traps (Stealth: 14 and Perception: 6).
As he moves away from the camp, his unseen servant will dissipate as Rinn leaves its proximity.
