Kaemgen Nature/Arcana/Wererat check: 17
(Seeing results before deciding actions...)
Kaemgen knows nothing! Including exactly why we are fighting these creatures when we don't have a stake in the mine or the miners. But arrows have been cast and reinforcements called... He knows not what the deal with the twitchy women is but he's ready for anything. Drawing his Warhammer and his Greataxe, Kaemgen moves to the door to the east from whence he hears the coming hordes and does his best to fill the door so that none may pass without coming through him...
Readied Action: Warhammer swing at any apparent hostile who tries to move past him...
Warhammer Attack: 11 Damage: 5 if needed, but it's non-magical bludgeoning so won't matter much.
As the others execute their attacks, Auric suddenly remembers about the Wererats, saying, "Weapons without a magical blessing or the purity of silver cannot harm these evil creatures! Beware the infectious bite of the nefarious rodents as well!"

Drawing both weapons, Kaemgen moves into the hall with both wolves at his heels. Together they create a living wall in front of Rita, imposing themselves between the incoming mix of giant rats to his left (North), and rat people to his right (East). With Auric's warning coming in time, Kaemgen's readied attack shifts focus to the first ankle biting hostile that comes from his left. Castor and Pollux bare their teeth, snarling in preparation to defend the line.
(Readied attack will trigger on the first giant rat.)
A sleek female(WR6) with a confident step pulls up to the front of the pack next to Rita. It was safe to assume she must be the leader the pair of women offered to take you too.
Mr.Dark takes his hand off his crossbow and with anxiety in his voice says, "They're immune to anything I might do. Do we need to regroup?"
He pulls out of leather skin of oil, slices it open with his dagger, and then gets ready to toss it. (If he has a clear shot at the floor of the, in case Kaemgan withdraws...he is READY to toss it at the floor of the door and ask Auric to light it up.)
The leader takes a step forward staring over Kaemgen's shoulder to Mr. Dark. With her step, two giant rats and Rita inch forward.
Castor and Pollux's snarling growls grow with ferocity. They're met with chatters and screeches from the many rats lined up in the cave. The sound rises towards a crescendo.
The leader raises her hand abruptly to cut her followers advance. All falls silent. Her eyes would then dart to Kaemgen before her. Cold yellow eyes trace him from head to toe. "Aren't you a brave one." Her head jerks to a tilt. "I don't bite." A cocky grin grows upon her lips. "Hard." Her chuckle started low and slow.
Then her eyes dart to Dark and the others in the back. "Run away with your tail between your legs little pups, run away."
"Or." Her eyes flick to Kaemgen. "Join my pack."
The wererats begin to chant. "One of us... One of us... One of us..." The group of them would start to crawl forward in an advance to push you back and out.
(You are at a stalemate so to speak. They will not release the 'hounds' unless one of you release another attack. They're focusing on driving you back out of 'their home'.)
Kaemgen risks a glance behind him to the others and growls "We have no job here, were just looking for a place to stay..." With that reminder, Kaemgen holds his position and awaits a signal from the others as to how they want to play this. He's aggressive by nature and control isn't his usual forte but he's holding on so far mainly 'cause he doesn't feel he has a reason for this fight. But that could change... As for whether or not his hammer and axe wouldn't work? Well, he'd believe that when he saw it!
Magic crackling at his fingertips, Auric considers the implications...
OOC: With his high roll, Auric knows about all the standard wererat stats--the risk of infection and the uselessness of mundane weapons key among them.
"Were it my decision alone, dastardly rat, I wouldst rain cleansing fire on thee and thy pack for thine assault on the innocent miners," says Auric, assessing the tactical situation as best he could--especially the conspicuous lack of silver among his companion's weapons. "However, punishing thy crimes appears to be outside my purview for the nonce," he adds, spreading his hands and starting to back away, out of the cave.

Mr.Dark backs away out of the cave with the others until he’s a good 30 feet from the mouth of the tunnel. He drops the oil pouch at the entrance as he walks past, letting it spray across the ground a bit as it falls.
Once a ways back he also casts light on the entrance so that it’s easy for him to see. He readies himself in case they decide to try and exit the cave.
If more than two rat people exit the cave mouth, and it looks like more are coming, he’ll lunge forward and cast burning hands in the entrance area.

Once they are well out into the night, Auric responds, still speaking quietly as he is concerned the rats might have excellent hearing, "Though it be possible some miners may yet live in the tunnels below, the rodent infestation hath too great a tactical advantage for us. During our next sojourn in Phandalin, let us seek out the overseer Don-Jon Raskin and apprise him of this development--as representative of the mine's rightful owners, the disposition of additional resources to assert their property rights is his purview."
Mountain’s Toe Quest. “The Mountain’s Toe Gold Mine lies fifteen miles northeast of Phandalin. The new overseer, Don-Jon Raskin, just made the trip from Neverwinter to Phandalin and needs to be escorted to the mine. There’s no telling what dangers lie between here and there. Once you deliver Raskin safe and sound, return to Townmaster Harbin Wester to collect a reward of 100 gp.”

Scott heads out of the cave with the others. Cursing himself for not recognizing what these creatures were before. Once outside and it’s clear the wererats aren’t coming out to fight them, Scott apologizes to the group for getting them in a bit more than they could handle themselves.
”Perhaps we walk a bit further and find a … ‘safer’ spot for a nights rest?”
”Indeed, let us journey away from this sordid affair,” agrees Auric, adding, “and at our next convenience, perhaps we shouldst acquire weapons of magical power, for there are foes beyond lycanthropes against whom ordinary weapons cannot prevail.”
“A fair point. I doubt those miners even stood a chance of defending themselves.” Scott laments of the loss of two of his arrows and begins ruminating on their return encounter with this group of wererats.
Kaemgen will be the last one to exit, slowly walking backwards ready for the horde to surge at him and the party at any moment, just in case. He trusts Castor and Pollux to lead him out, keeping one on each hip as a guide instead of turning his head to look at the way.
Once out, if they are not being followed or attacked, Kaemgen will commiserate with the others about being ill-prepared for this battle. "Last I knew though, magic weapons aren't handed out to all visitors of Phandalin," he points out. "Outfitting us each with even one such weapon is likely beyond our means at this point..."
While planning their next move (Still assuming no surge of crazed wererats coming out of the tunnel...) Kaemgen would ask if any have pen and paper available. "I believe we still had a mission to accomplish before returning to town, but the mine's foreman was in town looking for an escort back here. It would be best if we got word to them. Strange as it is, I believe these two here," Kaemgen says, nodding to the wolf twins, "just may be able to help us out. I think they are smart enough to find their way back there and find someone who would find a note tied around their neck and read it... It would surely save us time heading back there then back here."
Castor and Pollux snarled with such ferocity, their mouths practically frothed with evidence of saliva dripping from their fangs. Each strand of fur on their body stood on end as they remained completely diligent. Obedient as ever, Kaemgen would not have to command them twice. They’d back up with him, guiding the way out without having to pull their eyes away from the threat. They had padded feet, superior sniffers and even puppers have whiskers for some sensory, so doing so was not difficult by any means. Fully flaring their nostrils, they’d huff and puff, taking in all the scents to make sure they commit them to memory.
The wererats pressed forward until each and every group member was out of the cave. Treating the entrance like a truce threshold, the leader halts her minions from advancing beyond her, who stood at the mouth of the cave. She’d stand there like a sentry, chin held high and hands resting firmly on her hips. And watch. Multiple pairs of eyes remain fixated on the group, waiting, watching and unmoving until completely out of sight. Chatters and screeches however, continued to ring out into the night like a haunting echo, following you. Though none of them creep by or attempt to leave in an effort to follow you. They were however, studying you.
As the group puts distance between them and the cave, they’d be greeted by the dark sky and howling winds.
"A capital idea, Kaemgen", exclaims Auric, digging out his writing supplies, adding, "though perchance we shouldst encamp for the evening sheltered from the wind before attempting correspondence. Townmaster Harbin would seem a likely addressee, yes?"
