Ralf, the hobgoblin looks at you like you're crazy for not wanting the coin. He grunts "BAH. Fine. We are off then. May we never meet again."and he quickly picks up his longsword, sheaths it, and briskly walks out the front door, with the little goblins running at his heels.
It is at this moment that Professor Landy scoots into the lodge. "Who the blazes were those gob...." and then she frantically looks around and sees all of the carnage. "AAAHHHHHH!! No, No, NO!"she screams and starts to pace around the room, looking at all of the bodies. She didn't look at all of them, but at least half of them. She stops what she is doing, and stands in the middle of the carnage and says: "These.... these poor folks are not part of my dig team. The lodge gets many travelers, hunters, explorers and the like. *sigh*." in the moment, she can't finish her sentence because she is too shaken up because of all of the death around her.
She may or may not have more to say, but at this point all of you can go ahead and make any actions or ask any questions of her that you might have. You are all in the lodge with numerous bodies around you. It's horrific. The place is trashed. There is that lockbox in the middle of the room that the goblin was trying to open. Other than that, anything else will require skill checks that you see fit.
Map is updated. (all tokens are removed so you can see everything. The lockbox isn't showing on the map.)
The front room looks pretty trashed, Gotur will hop the bar to check out the back, looking for any survivors or any other clues as to what happened here.
Gotur, you hop the bar and begin your investigations. Nothing seems to be of interest back there. Behind the bar actually is the part of the lodge that didn't get touched, for whatever reason. Except the slain bartender, of course.
There are no survivors in the place. You see a total of 12 bodies. 7 humans, 3 halflings and 2 dwarves. "God dammit where the hell is my team!!" (says Landy as she is getting more frantic now.). The lodge is filled with plenty of food and basic supplies (ropes, lanterns, etc.)
You return to the main scene, and notice that the body closest to the front door belongs to a guard of sorts, and she has been killed by a blow to the head rather than the bites and slashes suffered by the other patrons.
Lastly, you notice several large pools of blood on the floor which are not near any bodies, which suggests that several other corpses may been removed.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Alton will retrieve his daggers from the fallen goblin and Bugbear. “Sorry about your friends!” he calls out to the Hobgoblin as it leaves the lodge. He then turns to the lockbox, pulling out his thieve’s tools to pick the lock.
Alton, you open the lockbox like butter, likely twirling the pick around your finger like one would do with a pencil.
Inside, you find 120gp.
However...... this act will upset the Professor if she notices all of this happen. The lockbox is in the middle of the room, and she's in the same room (high DC).
Alton, will you try and do this without her seeing, or do you care? If so, please roll a Sleight of Hand check.
"Raven Queen... the cause of this massacre, you must help me find. Guide my mind." prays Ralfaen as he casts Guidance on himself.
Nature check: 22 + 3
Ralf will use one use of his Eyes of the Grave feature to detect any undead within 60 feet of him that isn't behind total cover.
"Need healing, does anyone?" he says to the group. "Professor, calm your mind, you must. Breathe. Find your team, we will, as necessary to escorting your item, they are."
(Also, when any of you do an ability check, add Guidance to it, as Ralfaen will be awkwardly putting his hand on your shoulder and giving you words of encouragement. If we all do an ability check, tell me which one of you wants the Guidance.)
Ralf will also try to look for clues as to where the cause of this massacre could have gone. I don't know if that would be an Investigation or Survival, or some other check.
(I am going to get this thing moving again early tomorrow am, but wanted to give some quick results)
Ralf, it is very obvious to you once you take a peek at the bodies that the attacker was likely a ghoul. A few of them at least.
(Ralf has all of the knowledge about ghouls and knows all about them due to that roll and his background, hence why I posted the stat block. Usually I like keeping the stats secret, although I am betting all of you know most of the monsters in d&d already, so it doesn't really matter I suppose. For me, it's cool when I am a player because I haven't came across most monsters in the game yet, so I like to not know about the monsters stats when playing unless I make the roll and/or my character's background.)
Ralf, your eyes of the grave come up blank.
Ralf, yes please make that survival check and Gotur can make it as well based on the results of his initial investigations and finding the pools of blood with no bodies. Both with the guidance, of course.
