Venovar and Gotur, you head back down the passage and east into the larger alcove. 

You both see a human male, looks to be a commoner, clearly on death's door. He is laying down. He looks up at you, unable to speak. He has dying rot all over his skin. Bite wounds everywhere. Lots of blood. He is moaning, sounding kind of like the zombies from earlier.

Can Venovar make a check to see how close this human is to turning? He doesn't want to get close.

Yep sure thing, please make a medicine check.

You would've also seen the barrels on the map, as well as the rubble on the ground. Anything more would require more investigation.

Venovar, you can't be certain. They look a lot worse than your mother did, but they aren't making any hostile movements towards you or Gotur... yet. 

"What should we do? I don't know whether I should kill him or not."

Ok at this point, the human starts to grab at your ankles.

"Woah, steady there. Here, have a berry."

The human looks up at the berry, and you can really see its eyes now. They are bloodshot. It bats away the berry from your hand and now starts to rise to its knees, making different noises than it was just a few moments ago. More of a growl now. 

Gotur puts the butt of his staff at the man's chest, "Easy now... if you're past saving, we'll make it quick, but if you can still be helped..."

"Heearrrgghhh mmmfffpphhhh  haaeeerrrgghhhhhh bllarrrrgghhhhhhh" is what you make out as it becomes more violent and starts to flail around its arms.

If you want to continue holding it down with your staff, make a STR check. If you want to attack it, make an attack roll. Or something else, perhaps?

Combat is about to start, depending on what you do next. 

(Are Alton and Thorvin at the sewer passageway entrance now? Like by the ladder, where you began from?)

Gotur will cast entangle one the guy and the room beyond. 

"That might buy us time, but what are we thinking here? If this guy can't be saved, it would be the merciful thing... But given our reason for coming down here, I don't like thinking along those lines too far.", he says with a sympathetic look at Alton.

I think at least Alton is with Venovar and Gotur. He is standing behind them, trying to keep distance from the infected person.
