Heec hefts a crate from the kitchen pile. It rattles and bangs around so it's safe to assume that it's pots and pans and other kitchen implements. Heec goes into the kitchen which is off from a hallway on the main floor. The kitchen has small, high windows that are currently closed with wooden shutters rendering the room very dark. Your elf eyes can penetrate the dark and (in shades of gray) you see a small stove along the wall with a pile of coals next to it. Counters and various pegs and hooks line the other walls. There doesn't appear to be anything left behind on the counters but it's hard to tell what the state of the room is even with your dark vision.
Tae grabs a very large, though light, box of what is essentially junk and heads upstairs to the spare room. The box is cumbersome and obstructs your view so you have some trouble navigating the stairs up but manage to get there without any incident. Thick curtains are pulled shut across all of the windows and even with your dark vision it is difficult to see around the box. Emmett told you put the box on the far side of the room.
*Tae thinks nothing of the dark room and returns to the front yard and grabs the box destined for the Den, shoots Emmett a look of annoyance and returns to the house*
*Heec notices the embers and decides to Investigate.*
Tae drops the box in the middle of the spare room and walks out. A stack of crates at the back of the room topples over a minute later. That could have given someone a few splinters!
Heec investigates the still smoking embers. They look like the remains of some of those charcoal briquettes next to the cast iron stove. A sticky tar-like substance is coated on the sides and top of the stove.
*Tae hears the sound as he heads back to the yard. He shrugs it off as poor planning. He returns to the front yard and grabs the box destined for the Den, shoots Emmett a look of annoyance, says “That cavern could use some lanterns”, and returns to the house*
*Heec is curious as to how this tarred substance ended up in in the stove. He’s not sure exactly what it is. He decides it’s best to take a closer look at the substance.*
Taetormm passed through the downstairs hallway and enters the den. It is decorated with a couple lush leather chairs. The bookshelf that line one of the walls are empty. Thick rugs cover the wooden floors. Tae is careful not to trip over one that is scrunched.
Heec Investigation Check
The tar substance is black and thinly coats the top and sides of the stove. It is conspicuously absent from the bottom so you assume it must be flammable enough to be consumed in a fire. You notice some viscously leaking from a broken piece of charcoal in the pile.
*Tae looks down at the scrunched rug, struggles to turn and walk out because he just... doesn’t... care... but can’t because it will drove him crazy the entire journey home. He lifts the rug in an attempt to spread it out. Emmett will get another tongue lashing over this when he gets outside*
*Heec is worried that charcoal would leak. He has never seen charcoal leak before. He’s concerned what he is seeing in fact is NOT charcoal. Concerned, but not afraid, he exits the room to return to the front to warn Emmett of the existence of this material and grab another box. He intends to return to the room with Emmett to investigate further.*
*Tae, knowing better from past experiences (I won’t even get into his experience at the House-O-Traps), knew that this board deserved a closer look.*
Tae rolls a 10 (5+5) in an inspection check.
H: Hey Emmett. I’m going to grab the box Cellar but could you meet me in the Kitchen with a light of some kind? I’m not sure what’s in there but it looks VERY suspicious and I think we should both check it out.
*Heec returns to the front yard, grabs the box destined for the Cellar, and returns to the Kitchen.*
The board is definitely loose and can likely be moved. There are no signs that the board is trapped in any way.
Emmett sets down his load in the hallway. He isn't sure where his oil lanterns are but his parents always kept one in the kitchen anyway. He heads there and discovers that it is indeed dark. He fumbles his way over to the stove to throw some more kindling on and hopefully find a flint somewhere. He is a little surprised to feel the pile of charcoal rocks next to the stove instead of wooden logs, but he sort of remembers that they use a similar method of large pits of very hot coals to extract copper from the ore at the refinery. He is busy scooping up an armful of briquettes when Heec returns.
Unfurling the note, Tae sees a small slip on paper with childlike scrawling on it. It reads special drink to protect against monster upstairs
As Emmett has just about gathered as much as he can, a voice emanates from the dark behind him and scares the living Beshabas out of him. He throws his hands up in surprise and charcoal scatters everywhere tinging off the stove and counters and skittering across the floor. You hear some bounce inside of the stove as well.
Heec! You really startled me! I should probably go find something to help clean up this mess. I don't know where there are any lanterns but maybe I can scrounge one up.
The box intended for the master bedroom is full of Emmett's clothes. Some of them are very wrinkled and you can tell he had sweated in them more than he has washed them.
In the box headed for the Attic you find an assortment of items that look like heirlooms. There is a set of brass mirrors of differing sizes, though they are quite tarnished. There is also some personal grooming items that are made of common materials but have some interesting designs.
As the two elves call out the briquettes shift in the stove and settle into the embers. There is a sudden explosion of green-white light and sparks shoot out from the stove. Some of them come quite close to the threshold where the two elves are. The sparks die down immediately and the charcoal glows merrily in the stove. The kitchen fills with soft, ambient light.

*While in their respective rooms, both elves make perception checks*
Tae rolls 7 (5+2)
Heec rolls 20 (17+3)
Tae Perception Check:
Nothing is moving or making noise in the room.
Heec Perception Check
There are some faintly smoldering embers in the stove.

Tae lifts the rug and notices one of the floorboards has a gap on both sides.
Emmett sees Heec in the hallway as he is heading back to the master bedroom with another load of things.
You two are going to be done before me at this rate!
He laughs

*Tae, letting curiosity get the better of him, lifts the board.*
*Heec sets the crate down outside in the hallway and sees Emmett picking up the briquettes.*
H: Emmett! Don’t move! I want you to gently put down the briquettes and walk over here. Do you have any lanterns or a torch?
Tae easily lifts the board and finds a small hidden cache underneath. There is a single vial of bright green liquid with a note wrapped around it.
Heec make a Charisma check
*Tae grabs the vial and reads the note.*
Heec rolls a 4. (Oh god...)

*Tae doesn’t like the look of this note. He goes to find Heec.*
H: I think you need to find that lantern as soon as possible. I don’t think those were briquettes you were gathering...
*After Emmett leaves, Tae arrives to find Heec still in the doorway.*
T: Heec, I found a...
*Heec interrupts*
H: Tae. Don’t move. Search the crates for some phosphorus or a glow worm.
T: Dancing Lights?
H: Dancing Lights.
