It is a very sharp looking dagger. Though the design of the dagger is simple you can tell it is expertly crafted. The blade catches bright slivers of light from the fire's glow.
You hear Emmett coming downstairs long before you see him. He is holding five different lanterns all clanking together.
E: I found these in the spare room! The Inglebrooks left a mess in that place. I almost ran into a box in the middle of the room and fell into a pile of crates! Can you believe it? Anyway, I managed to find some lanterns even in the dark. You guys don't happen to have any oil or flints on you? I didn't need any of that stuff living at the flop h...
*He notices the fire
E: Great! You got a fire going after all!
*He drops the lanterns in a clatter.
E: I should probably keep moving my things.
He starts to turn away
E: That's a honey of a knife you got there, by the way.
H: Technically, it’s yours. We found it under the counter and since this is your house, this is your “honey of a knife”. But, since we have been coming across some questionable things in this house, do you mind if we hold on to it for now and then we’ll return it before we leave?
*Tae rolls his eyes*
H: If so, I’ll head to the Cellar and drop off the box I brought in. Tae, care to grab another box?
T (sarcastically): I’d love nothing more.
*Tae heads outside to grab the box for the Entertaining Room and heads towards the room.*
*Heec grabs the box for the Cellar and heads in that dorection.*
Emmett looks genuinely touched at the offer and a little sheepish too.
E: Oh guys, I have plenty of knives and things. If it was here already and you found it, please keep it.
He pickes up the box he was working in before and heads upstairs.
Tae enters the entertaining room. It is the largest room on the first floor by far. There are some couches and benches and chairs already in the room. A big fireplace is on the back wall. There is a rusty rapier hanging above the fireplace at a diagonal. There are pegs for another one but it is laying on the mantle.
Heec goes outside to grab the cellar box and moved towards the outside entrance at the side of the house. The green door is angled and low to the ground. It is unlocked.
*Tae sets down the crate in the middle of the room and mutters incoherent insults due the state of this house. Who sells a house in this state? Who doesn’t clean up a bit before having company over? These are all things Tae would like answered but it’s not nearly important enough to ask. He walks over to the Rapier on the mantle and puts it back in the pegs.*
*Heec opens the door to the cellar and makes a perception check.*
Tae sets the rapier in its pegs. A few moments pass and then Tae notices something...it really DOES look better now that the decorations have been balanced.
Heec Perception Check
The cellar door easily swings open and creaks slightly from both joints. A small set of stairs lead down to a short hallway lined on both sides with empty shelves. The short hallway has a dirt floor and ends with a plain wooden door. It looks pitch dark down here and you don't see any light sources coming from underneath the door. Out of your peripheral vision you do notice clods of grass and dirt scattered by the cellar entrance.
*Tae thinks there's something else afoot here. He's not entirely sure but he decides to give the room a quick glance.*
Tae rolls a 22 (crit) perception check.
*Heec isn't particularly fond of enclosed spaces underground with only one escape. Too many prior experiences with that scenario. He thinks it may be best to drop the crate off by the stairs and quietly, hastefully exit the Cellar.*
The furniture in the room seems neatly arranged to accommodate a family plus a small number of guests. After the fixing the rapier, the space above the fireplace does look charming in a rustic well-to-do farmhouse kind of way. It's hard to explain, it just looks nice damnit! The fireplace is immaculately clean with a small pile of wooden logs next to it. The poker and rake are neatly resting in the rack. It takes you moment to locate the grate for the fireplace but you find it on the ground a couple feet away.
A narrow set of stairs lead up to the attic door. You have some difficulty maneuvering the crate up the stairs and through the door but manage to make it without damaging anything. The attic is a wide, well lit room thanks to a large circular window at the opposite end (about 30 feet away) where sunlight is streaming in. There are several dusty chests and crates already scattered around with blankets, broken furniture and other odds and ends interspersed as well. A large floor length mirror stands on the other end of the room adjacent to the window.
Heec Perception Check
It's a dusty attic used to store old junk. You don't notice anything out of the ordinary from the other attics you've seen before.
Tae Perception Check
As you look intently around the attic studying for possible dangers you begin to notice that the dust and cobwebs are particularly thick. The rafters above you are even more thickly covered in webs. They are strung much more deliberately than random cobwebs. You don't see anything crawling through them, though.
Tae and Heec hear a baritone voice from behind the full length mirror.
Hail and well met strangers. Do I take it that you two fine gentlemen are the new owners and residents of this lovely domicile?
Nope. Nope, nope nope nope nope. Tae begins to head to the exit.
Heec stops him before he can pass. What is wrong with you?!
Look around. This is way too suspicious. I can honestly say I want nothing more to do with this house. Emmett is a nice guy but this is his problem now.
While I agree, he may have gotten more than he bargained for here, we can't leave him alone in the house like this. He doesn't know about any of this. Hey Emmett! We need you up here! Don't go anyway, Tae. Heec turns to the mirror. Hello there, friend. We are in fact not the new owners of this home, but the owner is on his way now.
Tae is getting increasingly uneasy about his surroundings. He keeps a steady eye on the rafters waiting for any sign of movement.
Tae makes an Investigation roll of 11 (6+5) on the cobweb covered rafters.
It's a LOT of webs and very thick in some places. They aren't the typical spiral patterns of most spiderwebs that you've seen but there are thick, sticky looking webs strung across in rafters in several places. You once saw a spider almost the size of your face in the woods and it would have no trouble getting from beam to beam on these.
A black spider the size of a medium dog jumps out from behind the mirror and severs a web strand. The severed web is rigged in a way that the door behind you shuts before either of you have a chance to grab it.
The spider's pedipalps move in a rhythmic fashion and you hear a voice projecting from it's mouth. It is somewhat disconcerting to hear something without lips speak in such a clear manner.
Wait! Please don't form any false assumptions! I had to hide because most people are frightened by my appearance. If you two aren't actually the owners of this house I implore you to reason with them so that I can stay. Although I understand that my size can be...off-putting, I can be just as helpful as my smaller brethren in keeping pests away. You should see some of the things that I can catch! No, no, that doesn't sound great does it.
It holds its two front legs up to the side of its head and shakes it
Well, for example, there is a rather large vermin*you hear obvious disgust in its voice* in the cellar. I saw it digging around the door not long after I arrived and it tunneled through somehow. I was planning on taking care of that unfortunate problem once i was settled myself. *It motions to the ceiling with one of it's front legs*
I humbly appeal to all that is decent in two upstanding elves such as yourself.
Well, I've got to say, locking us in a room with you after you've jumped out from behind the mirror is not the best way to make a first impression.
Nope.
But I must ask, what is this vermin you speak of? Is it dangerous? I can't speak for Emmett but you could perhaps remove the web blocking the door and we could all discuss this. We have no intention of leaving.
I may leave you all to talk this out...
He's not going anywhere! None of us are going anywhere. You don't seem threatening to us so we'd like to help you if we can.
The spider reels the web in and it comes loose from the hinges. It then moves about five feet closer.
Don't be so droll!
Laughs the spider
I didn't lock you in, I just needed a moment to clarify my intentions. You can imagine that when people see me they have to tendency to, *it clicks it pedipalps* overreact I guess we can call it. Now as to whatever is down in the cellar, I can only deign to imagine. It was dark and furry and most certainly...revolting. i could barely stand to watch it for but a few moments as it dug about. I am most certainly not threatening, unless you happen to be a tasty fly. Go speak with the new master of this abode and we can deal with the whatever has taken up residence in cellar after.
I'll call for Emmett. He'll have to make the ultimate decision on all things house related. Heec opens the door and yells down to Emmett. Hey Emmett! We need you up here pronto!
Just out of curiosity, do you also need larger sized flies in order to satisfy your appetite or do you eat other creatures too?

Tae sees some fire in the stove. It's probably like hot or something.
Heec catches a gleam from something metallic that is partially sticking out from underneath one of the counters.

H: We should tell Emmett about this.

H: Meet you halfway: we let him know, keep the dagger until we’re done here, then give it to him.

H: Not gonna happen friend. Hey! Emmett!

Heec bravely runs away.
Both Heec and Tae arrive out front for the last crate destined for the Attic.
Last one, right?
Should be. Then we can head over to the jewelers.
Why do you sign me up for all these things? Maybe I don't want to go?
We're picking up some gems, that's it! I don't imagine it'll take very long. Where is this crate going?
The Attic. Before we go, check this out. Tae pulls out the vial and hands Heec the note. What do you make of this?
Hmmmm... "Monsters" eh? It could be a child just playing a joke on whomever found the vial.
Or things could get a little hairy.
Let's just get this last crate up there and be on our way... but keep the vial close...
In an attempt to not frighten Emmett, they agree it's best not to tell him about the note. The elves take the crate to the entrance to the Attic.
