The mention of the Deepking and the implied forceful removeval of freedom from the peple of Vin Badur does not sit well with Nicholas. Not being able to stay silent he asks, "Just why are you attempting to do away with the autonomy of the residents here? Is it not the right of each person to make their own choices? The teachings you are talking about her seem to want to strip this right from the people."

Derendil gives an apprehensive nod before slowly following Baror up to the altar. He mounts the steps and then gently places the limp body of the young myconid onto the elevated altar. Derendil then awkwardly steps back and stands next to the old duergar.
Baror looks back to Nicholas with a soft grimace. “In no way are we attempting to take away their freedom. We are only trying to reach out and help this small village; to offer a helping hand or ally in these trying times. We have done nothing but good, and although the citizens may be apprehensive now, they will soon realize the benefits. Our intentions are nothing but honest.” He says with a sense of finality of the matter. “Now please, be silent as I try to help you with this problem...”
The old duergar then reaches for a small holy symbol around his neck. He clutches it and mutters a few words as the air around him begins to shimmer and glow with a soft red light.
What would you like to do? Either while he begins to cast whatever the spell is or before he started casting it

(I've done some searching and can't find anywhere where this has been addressed, but if you'll allow it out of combat... Perfectly alright if not. Say the word and I'll change Syvis' tactic.)
With heightened anticipation and worry for Stool's welfare as well as doubting Baror's intent, Syvis quickly weighs everything she has learned about the duergar in the last several minutes to try to anticipate any possibility of deceit. She quickly glances back to the group and puts a hand on her rapier.
Thodek simply keeps quiet, saddened at the thoughts of his unfortunate cousins who follow the ways of tradition no matter what opportunities may arise, and waits for the day he might one day bring enlightenment to them.

Deception: 7
Analyzing Baror, as far as you can tell, the old duergar is honest in what he plans to do to Stool.
In fact, the spell continues as the red glow begins to materialize and begins to draw into his hands. Baror clutches the magical force before placing both of his palms on Stool’s chest. The red pulses through the small myconid, but appears to have no effect. You wait a few more seconds.... but nothing. The spell has not woken Stool from his coma.
Baror stands back, wiping a few beads of sweat from his brow. “It... it appears as though it has not worked... I am... sorry. I don’t know how much more I may be able to do...”
"We thank you for your attempt, nonetheless. It was more than we have been able to do thus far. But it appears we must continue our search for one with greater power. Do you know if any such individual?"
Syvis looks around at the group and adds, "Seeing the state that we are all in, would it be possible to procure lodging in your town so that we might all rest before pressing on?"
“Other than Gracklstugh... I’m not sure.” Baror says significantly quieter. Almost a mumble. “There are powerful Clerics— much more powerful than me— in the City of Blades, and I’m sure they would be able to help you. Even then... I do not know what the cost might be. It surely couldn’t be free...” He finishes, trailing off to silence.
The old duergar thinks for a second before shaking himself from the trance. “Sorry, yes. There is an inn, just a few minutes from here in the main square. You can’t miss it.” Baror then looks up. “I am... truly sorry. Please, if you would meet me here again in the morning, I could uh see about helping with the next step. I feel an obligation to help now...”
Thodek remains silent until they leave the building and then turns to the others, "I think we should take him up on his offer of assistance and then go, we can continue to head to take the little one home, perhaps they'll know of a way to help him."
The rest of the group follows Syvis and Thodek as you exit Flamekeep. Derendil collects Stool and joins you and you find yourself back in the main square of Vin Badur.
“I-is Stool going to be okay...” Topsy asks.
“Yeah,” Jimjar adds. “I can’t say I really understand al that kind of magic stuff... what exactly happened back there?”
Thodek nods hesitantly, "I believe he attempted a form of magic that can heal many minor ills, but would not be enough for something this serious. I believe the magics he performed, and perhaps all he is capable of performing, are similar to magics I am capable of. We would need a much more powerful cleric, or perhaps a druid, to heal our small friend. Amongst the duergar, I doubt you'd find that anywhere besides a major power center, where I would not likely be welcomed. If you'd like to try to journey there anyway, I will accompany you, and just remain outside or perhaps pretend to be servant of one of you. Otherwise, I think our best option would be to find another center of power, such as his people or those of the twins and see what they might have."
"Understood. I think it would be most prudent for us to rest at the inn at this point and see what he has planned in the morning. I am still standing but the teleportation took a lot out of me and I need to meditate."
"I think we have little choice in the matter and we are unlikely to find many places like this where we can rest in relative peace. Try not to worry too much, we will be doing all we can to save Stool."

The twins both give a solemn nod which is then mirrored by Jimjar. He grabs both of their hands and begins to walk off in what you assume to be the general direction of the inn. “Come on!” He yells back. “Aren’t ya’ all looking forward to some actual food and drink. And a bed!” Jimjar says with a chuckle. “Not that we’ve got any coin, but who cares. I’ve got my ways...”
Derendil, Cailean, and Voyage each follow the elated gnome, each with a small smile on their faces. Sure enough, after about a one to two minute walk you reach a quaint two story building. It has a just-starting-to-rust metal sign hanging from a post that says: The Rusty Pick. From outside you can hear the faint sound of voices and a warm heat emanates from the building which is becoming increasingly inviting as the outside Underdark becomes colder.
At the mention of coin Thodek's eyes widen slightly, "Oh, yes, coin! I'd nearly forgotten we'd need that once we reached civilization. Um... maybe they have a back alley or something I can disappear into for an hour, or if you all could find a way to shield me from any prying eyes, I may be able to take care of that."
Assuming they're able to find such a place, he'd spend an hour transforming part of one of his remaining gold bars into gold coins. (Using his channel divinity feature, I'm assuming he'd have seen a duergar gold coin before and know what it looks like to copy them. Also, what is coinage like in the underdark?)
(Yep, you could easily find a back alley to quickly convert the gold bar into coins. So... that’s 100gp? For simplicities sake, let’s just say regular dnd coinage. Each race might have their own small modifications to the coins, but everything is accepted by all. You would know most duergar imprint theirs with a flaming anvil and warpick (the symbol of the Deepking.))
"While I am not opposed to paying our way, let us allow Jimjar to work his aforementioned ways so that we can conserve our resources for things which might have a more lasting benefit than a night at an inn."
Looking to the gnome she asks, "What did you have in mind? Are any of us able to assist you?"
“Hah!” Jimjar scoffs. “I’ll do my best, but will have you know the extent of my plans was to just talk our way into some free food or a free stay. Something about being associated with Baror, but I’d be willing to be 5 gold that it’ll backfire. Maybe just safest to pay in coin; I’m open for whatever however.” The deep gnome says with a smirk and a shrug.
Syvis nods curtly at Derendil, indicating that he should do as the duergar says.
