"Friendly enough - tis true. Well met once again, Trinjya. This is Peridord - a fine halfling of the Oath of Redemption. As you have overheard, we are soon looking to depart to the Southwest, in search of these foul creatures. Nothics, as we have just learned, are one eyed aberrants of particular interest to our local Wizard's enclave, and of satisfactory reward from the guard. I had hoped to recruit someone from this tavern who... well, as you noticed on our last venture, we seemed to lack much in the way of anyone really willing - let alone able - to bear the blows of our enemies. Perhaps someone with some nice armor, or who..." Horatio's gaze looks around the tavern again as his voice trails off, losing his train of thought as he searches again for one more to add.
"Still, I for one would be glad to have you with us once more."
"as morn explained to me, nothics are the remnants of wizards who dug too deep, into darkest magics. these remnants wish to cure themselves of their conditions, and so seek out places of knowledge, follow old shattered memories, and are relatively peaceable unless denied or attacked, even if they are evil creatures. the signature ability is to cast a rotting beam from their eye, corroding the target caught in the creature's gaze. they speak undercommon, and i need a book of the language or someone fluent in it in order to communicate with the creature." Samael explains all this, and is oddly energetic when doing so.
"The hope is that no fight will be necessary, isn't it? Anyway, if all else fails, I'm tougher than I look. Endurance-wise, leastways- I couldn't heft a suit of chain mail off the ground worth trout.
Do you know where we might find someone who speaks Undercommon? I know Deep Speech; I studied up on it as I sailed over, but unfortunately I've never learned Undercommon."
(OOC - @SparkRotfang, @MrTweedeh & @Murtle_the_Mighty: - if you can't find another and wish to run this with 3 instead of 4, that is possible it may just be a little more difficult. The only place in town that would really have any sort of books on Undercommon would be the Wizard's Tower, however their library is still collecting more tomes and so doesn't have a book on that language. Besides, learning a language would be better done with someone that knew it in order to teach you the nuances to be proficient and would take some time.)
(OOC - sorry @Kaldaras, I forgot you'd been talking around town too. Well guys, if you want to head out with the four of you, let me know and I'll set up the OOC chat and thread later today/early tomorrow morning. But I'm happy to wait if you want some more.)
Ooc: we can’t communicate with it at present through language, and finding a way to do so seems unlikely without a good deal of time. I think we should just go and see if we can communicate well enough with hand signals and various magical boosts.
Trinjya remains silent for a moment seemimgly thinking about what she just heard.
"Well I certainly don't know undercommon but why do we want to talk to it anyways? What's the job? Are we supposed to interrogat it?....Oh my god, is it the only living creature that knows where Toadsi's sens of humor is hidden?"
At this, Horatio smiles. "I was under the impression that vengeance was to be wrought against it, for the sake of the fallen guardsman and the clear and present risk it presents. Samael had mentioned an alternative mission, however, which would involve establishing communication with the creature, perhaps for the sake of greater study of its magics and whatever warped home it hails from. I, for one, would favor the more destructive path, once we embark. I don't much fancy letting my skin be melted away by such a creature."
"the guard wanted vengeance, morn would rather no more townsfolk died needlessly. if we can see what the creature writes, if it can, I can read all writing and translate it."
(ooc: I'm joining, the reason i'm pushing hard for a diplomatic solution is that A) i have money now, B) i'd rather save my energy for the venture outward, and c) diplomacy can lead us to rewards, like maybe the nothic collects magic trinkets, and if we help him, maybe some would be given to us, IDK, i'd rather not die now.)
Thavriol walks into the tavern and orders a mug of mead. Sipping it, he turns to the tavern. "Got a job, out beyond the walls that needs doing," he says. "Out by the Hills Farm is a burrow with lots of Neogi. Me and my companions tangled with it, killed some and reclaimed some of the farmer's things, but there's more needs doing, including rescuing his workers, who we believe are still alive. Anyone interested in joining up? Need a stronger group this time around. We had 4 last time. I'm thinking 5 or 6 at least for the return fight."
The bartender passes you your mug and listens in on your call for help. "You're not talking about ol' Hurdig are you? Tough ol' bugger that one. And he's good to his workers. Hope you can muster up some help. They're good folk there on his farm." He nods to you and continues serving and cleaning around his bar.
Sienna walks up behind Thavriol "Yeah Hurdig that's the one, I'd rather not leave a job unfinished you know? But it's a bit much for just us" she indicates the rest of the returning party

Sienna Fulgurflash, Bard 3- Child of the Stormy Sea - Alycron West Marches
Alix walks in a few minutes later, holding his black book which is now unassuming and the size and appearance of a hard cover novel. He goes to the bar and orders food and drink, and sits down, watching the other occupants as he eats. He says nothing yet, but looks like he is considering things.
Joining whichever of the others went to get the items identified, Perigord wanders into the wizard's tower.
"Could someone here do us a favor and identify some of these items?"
The robe and the pearl from the Watchers campaign would seem to be it, though Perigord also asks if the magic aberration-encyclopedia has any abilities they haven't found yet.
Morn greets you with a nod and gestures for you to keep the noise down before pointing over his shoulder to the dwarf buried in his books. "It will take a little time, but I'm sure I can figure this out for you," he says, holding up the robe and then the pearl, before turning back to Perigord, "You didn't happen to find any interesting books down in the library at all did you." Upon seeing the aberration book, his eyes light up, "Ahh... may I?" He flicks through the pages, muttering to himself as he makes notes and nods to himself at points. He closes the book and turns back to you. "Well, other than a peculiar book, it is unfortunately just an encyclopaedia of aberrations. Without knowing all the names of such creatures, it is not entirely helpful. Though, you could leave it here with us and we might investigate it some more? Perhaps we can isolate some more of the pages. Any other books of interest for us here in the tower?"
He turns back to the items while he listens, drawing several runes and symbols, referring to his books and muttering some incantations occasionally. He eventually turns back to you. "The pearl is a Pearl of Power. Great for replenishing a small amount of magical power in a pinch. The robe is quite the wardrobe. A Robe of Useful Items. It has a number of patches on it, each indicating an item that can be procured. Simply rip the badge off and the item appears in your hand or on the ground nearby."
(OOC - whoever takes the robe, let me know and I can send you the specifics of the badges on it.)

Perigord's eyes widen in temporary surprise beneath his shock of gray hair, but he speaks up cheerfully anyway.
"Thanks, I guess! It's certainly nice to meet a new friendly face."
Edit: goofed up text color, lol

samael looks at her in a deadpan look "perhaps a means of communication? do you know where a book of the undercommon language is?"
