Dormark accepts the coin and says, “Thank you, but all we did was move some cargo. We will take you up on the offer we need to discuss some things and get some rest.” He says puting the coin in his pouch.
“Yes. The warehouse would be perfect. I don’t feel like walking any further than I have to today.” Ioben accrpts the coins and slips them into his backpack. He agreed with Doemark that this was probably the easiest money he had made in a while, but he was not about to mention it in present company.
Sandu looked at the palisade surrounding the town with an approving nod. Vallaki seemed to have the right idea. He did not know how effective it had been so far but a wooden wall with a guarded gate at least conveyed a sense of security much better than Barovia had done. He silently followed the others as they walked in, taking small pleasure in being in an actual town rather than out on the open road.
When the group arrived at the Arasek Stockyard, Sandu let the sack of Randu's good slide off his shoulders, letting it fall on the ground with a soft thud. He gave an approving smile at Yelena and Gunther at their suggestion that they could spend the night in the warehouse. It might not be the soft bed he had hoped for in the warm comfort of an inn but Sandu figured that staying together with the group trumped any individual want. For the moment at least.
Sandu grabbed the sack he had dropped. The better half of him, the part that argued using miss Esther's voice, had won out in the end and he slipped the cloth with the broken shard and ring into it before moving over to Radu. After he received the twenty golden coins from the merchant, Sandu addressed him. 'I hope you don't mind but I took a quick look at some of your wares. If you're selling, I'm interested in this.'
He reached into the sack and retrieved the bundle of cloth along with the broken shards and ring. 'I'm willing to barter for it.' Said Sandu as he cast a longer than necessary look at his crossbow dangling from the side of his backpack.
Galqarin - Helena gives you a fleeting look of confusion,"Oh... Yes, we, I mean Gunther might be able to provide you with a cloak more suited to Vallaki. I understand that Vistani can... find it hard at times." She shakes her head, clearly upset. "Trust me friend - you shall receive no judgement here. But.. I understand."she says, smiling. ((Based on your passive Insight and also general knowledge of the Vallaki you know that they are both being sincere - they have built a reputation of being 'good folk'.))
Baern - "Well met, Master Dwarf." Gunther says offering his hand,"If you'll excuse my bluntness - it has been a long time since I have seen a dwarf in Vallaki. Do you mind if I ask what brings you here?"His question is not unkind, more curious, it is directed at the party in general.
Dormark - Radu waves his hand dismissively. "Let it not be said that Radu Radovich does not 'elp those who 'elp 'im." he declares."Though rest'll be a good idea - tonight 'as been far too eventful!"
Sandu - As you pull out the ring the colour from Radu's face disappears. "Where... where did ya ge' that?" he stammers quietly, almost whispering, "I... I..." He seemingly snaps out of whatever daze he was in and says,"Truth be told... I thought I 'ad lost tha'. You wan' it? Wha' are ya willin' to barter?"His eyebrow raises a little. ((Can you make an insight check please - I shall bear in mind your passive insight as the conversation progresses - would be good to see whether you can roll higher than it though.))
Sandu took note of Radu's change in demeanour, finding it both curious and lightly amusing. It meant the ring was valuable or, more likely, it was acquired under dubious circumstances. Either way, it made the ring more interesting.
'I have some gold.'Sandureplied with a smirk, flashing the merchant his former gold coins. 'I'm also willing to throw in my crossbow, should you have want of it.'
Baern unknowingly slouched just a bit at word of no other dwarves in Vallaki. "I guess you could say the fog brought me here. I gather I'm not the first? Or maybe it is that HE brought me here? I'm still not really sure."
Sandu - The merchant strokes his chin, "20 gold pieces an' a crossbow... nice try."Radu's lips curl up in a grin,"Tell ya wha'... I'll accept tha' as a down payment. BUT, when the time comes I shall ask ya to undertake a job - nothin' too serious, nothin' wrong, jus' a job - an' if ya do it for me, the ring will be yours. Otherwise, I keep the down payment an' you return the ring. Deal?"
There is most certainly more to the ring than Radu is letting on. You are aware from the INCREDIBLY low price he has seemingly agreed to (job aside) that he might well want rid of this particular item; at the moment the ring has been massively under-valued by Radu.
As an additional little tidbit; you are aware that Radu is affecting the accent; you have notice it slip a couple of times. It sounds like he wants to make himself seem potentially a lot less intelligent / shrewd than he actually is. Additionally, any nervousness he portrays is a farce - he is a naturally confident person.
Baern - Noticing your shoulders drop a little, Gunther softens his tone,"No, no, definitely not the first. Others have come before, with similar stories to yourselves - tales of mists bringing people here." He pauses, "I am... sorry, that you were brought here in such a way. Many Barovians have attempted to leave before, in years past."There is a sadness to his words,"Only folk I have heard that are able to escape this place are in service to HIM... it is, in part, why people here mistrust the Vistani."
Dormark walks over to the Dwarf and pats him on the back, "Don't worry little brother, we will get out eventually. Moradin's gaze on his children seeing how we perform with our tribulations. Let us face them head on, grinning and singing knowing our god is on our side."
Bowing his head to Gunther he said, "Thank you for letting us stay for the night. As you probably notice some of us are bit more unusual than most people you meet in Barovia, but we are good people underneath it all."
Baern looks up and smiles at Dormark, a bit of determination also on his face. He grips his new warhammer a bit tighter and raises it up a few inches as an indication of his readiness to persevere, giving Dormark a nod.
"So are you from here then?"he asks their latest acquaintances. A few moments later he also gestures to the colorful wagon and asks "oh, and what's that?" "I've never seen a wagon like that."
Ioben follows the conversation, particularly that of Bearn and Gunthar. While haggling over anything is a sport in itself, unravelling the mystery of how to get home was far more important to him.
“So there are people who leave here then? At least there is some hope in all this gloom.”
(If the party rests before I get to post again, Ioben will spend some time studying the stone he acquired from the camp.)
Dormark - Gunther nods and casts a sideways glance at Helena. "This land can be a rough place; the people are tormented and there are hidden horrors behind every corner. It is natural for folk to be paranoid and mistrusting." A look of deep sadness is writ upon his face, "To what ends does it make sense for us..."He gestures to everyone present,"to exacerbate the tension, to not show kindness to those in need? Are we not, at that point, playing into the hands of the tormentor himself?"
Yelena gives her husband's hand a little squeeze,"We are happy for you all to stay here, for as long as needs be. I think it is best that we talk more of Vallaki in the morning." She says smiling.
As Gunther gives his speech you have not doubt that it is a heartfelt monologue wrought with sincerity. However, Radu shifts a little uncomfortably - especially when Gunther refers to peoples mistrust and paranoia.
Baern - Helena drops her voice a little embarrassed, "Well I am not entirely sure where I come from, truth be told. I grew up in St. Andral's - at the orphanage in town. Gunther is a 'local', he inherited this Stockyard. It's been the Arasek Stockyard for many generations." She looks at the wagon,"That is being kept... for a friend. Please Baern, I implore you, stay well clear of it." She lets the subject drop.
Ioben - Gunther nods,"Aye - many have tried over the years. Their bodies are often found in the Svalich Woods. I've never heard of anyone leaving Barovia. Many enter, none leave."Once more there is a deep, despairing sadness to Gunther's words.
It sounds like he wants to make himself seem potentially a lot less intelligent / shrewd than he actually is. Additionally, any nervousness he portrays is a farce - he is a naturally confident person.
The little shifts in Radu's demeanour did not go unnoticed by Sandu. They served to make Radu a more interesting person in Sandu's opinion. Especially the way he reacted to Gunther's words of mistrust and paranoia. Radu had secrets. And if there was anything Sandu knew about secrets, it was that some people would go to great lengths to keep them hidden. He wondered what sort of man Radu would prove to be.
'A tempting offer.' Sandu acted like he did consider it, 'But as a merchant, you'd know that a future payment is not reliable. I don't intend to hang around longer than I need to and, I'll be honest: there is nothing keeping me from bailing on the deal later. But that would not be fair, would it now?'
He tapped his chin a couple of time. 'Tell you what,' said Sandu, 'I'll raise you 30 gold coins with the crossbow. I'll even throw in the bolts for free. Sounds like a fair deal.'
He lingered ever so slightly on the words honest and fair. Not noticeable enough for them to stand out but long enough to give them a certain gravitas. Sandu then leaned in to Radu in a sort of conspiratorial whisper. Like he was about to share a secret with another secret keeper.
'And if I'm being completely honest,'Sandu glanced at the couple of Gunther and Yelena and directed his and Radu's gaze at their handholding, 'you'll be helping me make an honest woman out of someone.'
Baern looks a bit surprised at Helana's warning about a wagon, but gives her a silent nod of understanding and doesn't mention it again. After one last glance at the mysterious object he turns his attention to Ioben's conversation, listening to more confirmation that the group won't be walking home via the fog any time soon.
Galqarin's interest is piqued by the insistence that Baern should stay away from the wagon... but it is probably just filled with some merchandise of value and perhaps their new hosts are not that trusting of them.
He also finds it strange that his fellow travellers seem to think so ill of this land, whereas he - who has grown up with its depravations - has been treated better in the last couple of days than in most of his life to date! He resolves find out more about the strange lands from which they hail. Also, to measure the length of Baern's beard to see if it does indeed grow notably longer each day.
Sandu - Radu gives you a look of defeat,"Ya drive a 'ard bargain friend. Very well - bu' once the deal is done there's no refunds!". After accepting the money for the ring he shall bid his farewells and declare that he is,"Goin' ta the Inn. Afta all I've been through, could use a comfy bed." With that he makes a comment about arranging to collect his wares at a later date and heads off in the direction of the Blue Water Inn.
Dormark - Chuckling softly, Gunther shakes his head a little, "Afraid you are the first on that count. I must admit that you appear to be one of a kind."He smiles kindly, "I've heard tale of suits of armour that act as though they are living - animated to carry out particular tasks."He pauses briefly to think,"Might be worth going to visit Old Blinsky. He owns a shop here in town - sells all sort of animated toys. He might be more knowledgeable in that regard."
Galqarin relaxes a little when Radu departs. He continues to listen intently to Dormark and Gunther's conversation - is Dormark referring to who he thinks he is, Galqarin wonders? And, if so, why would Dormark be seeking him?
Weary, and suddenly uncaring if their hosts see him for what he is, he lays down his raven-headed staff, removes his mask and places it carefully it next to the staff, makes a pillow from his Vistani robe and then curls up in a furry ball.
After a brief time of answering some of the burning questions of the party Helena looks across to Gunther, "Come now Gunther, these travellers must be weary, we should let them rest." Gunther nods in agreement and they bid everyone 'good night' before departing.
The inside of the Warehouse is rammed full of miscellaneous items; some broken, some functional, tools, toys, wagon-parts, etc. Many of the items are covered by large sheets, all covered in dust, seemingly untouched for years. The exhausted party manage to find a corner of the Warehouse to set out their bedrolls / shutdown for the night. Sleep is short coming for the group.
Darkness. The heavy patter of rain. More darkness. Then a voice - deep, harsh and calculated pierces the black.
"Send word quickly - they have arrived as expected. Arasek Stockyard." The darkness lessens slightly revealing a barely visible scene in grey-scale. A figure stands cloaked and soaked, next to an unlit building, their features not visible in the moonlight. Another figure stands but a few paces in front - taller than the first, their face also obscured. As the figure speaks it's tone is malicious, "Did you do as was asked?" The second figure holds out a hand as though expecting to receive something.
Trembling the first figure hands an item, wrapped, over. Their voice significantly less harsh than before, betraying their fear, "It... it is all there... As we...". "Silence!" the second figure hisses. "Stay close to them, watch them... our Master is most interested in their progress. He know's they met the hag."There is a pure loathing in the voice, a deep hatred."If they should find..." The sentence becomes unintelligible. The scene begins to pan out - the shop sign comes into view fleetingly, depicting a coffin. The darkness returns.
Morning - Day 5 - Storms a-coming!
You wake to the sound of heavy rain beating down on top of the warehouse. A loud growl echoes around - likely the growing storm raging outside. Puddles begin to form in parts of the warehouse through gaps in the old decrepit roof. It appears to be early morning, it is hard to tell given the relative darkness outside.
Ireena sits huddled with her brother for warmth, she shivers slightly. "Was wondering when you were going to wake"she says sleepily,"Sleep well?"
Baern listens to Galqarin, shrugs and nods his head in agreement. "Sounds great to me, especially over being out on that road at night any longer."
The stout dwarf steps forward. "Hello Yelena and Gunther, I'm Baern Stonebrok. Nice to meet you!"
Dormark accepts the coin and says, “Thank you, but all we did was move some cargo. We will take you up on the offer we need to discuss some things and get some rest.” He says puting the coin in his pouch.
