Conveniently, the guard that had disappeared down the stairs returns with a black bearded man in a leather jerkin. The charmed guard talks to the him briefly.
He looks over the parapet at Merry and Nibor with suspicion. Who are you? What do you want?
Hello! My name is Merry Weather and this is my travelling companion Nibor. We’re just passing through the area and last night we heard a bell ringing from this area, after we were set upon my bandits, so we thought we’d investigate. Merry sighs, looking tired, In all honesty, we were hoping we could grab some grub and rest our weary feet by your hearth. I’d be happy to pay in kind with a song or two and I’m sure my friend Nibor here could regale your men with a few stories.
You hear things sliding and clunking behind the gates before they are opened and the four guards escort Merry and inside. They are polite and not rough with you.
The area just inside the castle gatehouse consists of a small courtyard of bare dirt and tufts of wiry grass. A stable stands to the east, the gatehouse to the west, and the main yard of the castle lies to the north. The keep occupies the northern corner of the castle yard. Stone stairs near the keep lead up to the top of the wall.
The others make their way along the Eastern wall while attentions are distracted.
The keep’s eastern wall is built into the river, forming a long pier that encloses a boat basin. A heavy chain that emerges from the tower to the south stretches across the entrance and blocks boats from entering or leaving.
Merry looks around her in wide-eyed awe and looks to the captain, Quite a place you’ve got here! Thank you for your hospitality, is there anyone else who’s in charge here, other than your kind self, who we should be extending our gratitude to as well?
I will! Any tips not to get on his bad side? Is there a particular house you folk fall under? I wouldn’t want to insult him with any of my songs... Merry then winks at the captain, with a smile.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Happy to let Merry take the lead Nibor follows along trying to determine how many are holed up in the keep, checking the battlements and gatehouse to see if he can spot any others patrolling. Perception: 13

While wary of being split from the group he can't help admire the architecture of the keep, thinking on it's original purpose and architects...
Nibor sees there is one lookout on top of each of the four wall sections, patrolling back and forth.
The gate is barred from the inside. You feel it wouldn't be forced open by any means short of a siege engine. The bar can be raised from inside the gatehouse passage or lifted by an iron chain from the upper floor of the gatehouse.
The keep was one of several built by a band of adventurers many years ago, the Knights of the Silver Horn. You know they were founded to try and reclaim Tyar-Besil, a Besilmer Shield Dwarf city.
The escort takes the pair to the great hall, passing an old ruined stable. On the way, Nibor's watchful eye sees a steep bluff of earth and loose rock on the eastern edge of the castle yard. He can make out the top of a stone staircase.
This room is the great hall of the keep. It is two stories high, with stone stairs on both sides of the room leading up to a stone balcony at the west end of the chamber. Heavy double doors lead east to the castle yard, while two interior doors open to the west. Arrow slits look out to the north and the south.
It is currently set up as a banquet hall.

Well I suppose there's no reason I can't really now that you mention it. I'll have to ask the guard captain though.

Coal nods to Arnnon and Rollo and indicates they should move closer to the waters edge
Rollo silently agrees and follows suit
The captain looks at the pair silently for an uncomfortably long time.
Fine. We could use the entertainment. Stay there, 4 of my men will escort you to the main hall. You can earn your keep.

Boss'll be down for dinner later in the hall. If your music and tales are good, you'll get your chance to thank him then.
I will! Any tips not to get on his bad side? Is there a particular house you folk fall under? I wouldn’t want to insult him with any of my songs... Merry then winks at the captain, with a smile.
The captain scowls at her in response to the wink.
Maybe just try singing more than talking, eh? And don't bullshit him.
