Throwing several chunks of the bread and cheese down the hallway is met with excited squeaks, a flurry of movement, and then silence. The hallway is a bit cramped, but manageable. After a few feet, it takes a U-turn to the right and immediately descends into darkness. Darkvision shows the stairs continue downward for at least 40' before leveling out.
Anyone proceeding down the hallway roll a Perception check.
Anyone continuing on down the stairs roll a second Perception check.
At the top of the stairs you notice another barrel with the top askew. Carefully checking inside you find more of the moldering chunks of bread and cheese, so will be convenient for a return trip.
Barnabus: As you near the bottom of the stairs, something about the ceiling doesn't seem quite right, but you can't exactly put your finger on it.
Rachel gets a pair of torches out of her pack and is prepared to light them for those not blessed with darkvision.

With the light of the torch, coming down the stairs, the anomaly on the ceiling at the bottom becomes clear. There seems to be a patch of some kind of green growth hanging there.
There is a wall about 10' away from the bottom of the stairs, with open space to either side. A faint clacking can be heard intermittently off to the left.
Map enclosed in the spoiler.
The map shows more than you currently can see, but this seems easier than a very verbose description. You are in the room towards the top right with the stairs in the middle. And pay no attention to the secret passages shown, the only secret doors will be the 2 between the 5 pillar room and the stairs.
Kina nods to Bart and clenches her jaw as she descends, looking clearly uncomfortable. Kina cautiously heads down the stairs, trying her best to keep from making too much noise. She brings up the rear, keeping an ear on the hallway behind them. The animals in the place are certainly restless enough. As Kina passes under the growth, she'll take an experimental poke at it with her staff, just in case. Very gently, just to see if it's going to grab at it. It seems this place has no end of predators.

"Hey I hear something'" Barnabus whispers as he takes a couple steps to the east. His eyes, accustomed to the cavernous dark of the underground, scan all around.
Caderecognizes the growth as a Green Slime, and makes sure that it is burned before it has a chance to drop on anyone.
Barnabus: you see a brief movement as a figure stops and turns in your direction, then a sound you instinctively recognize as a sword banging against a shield in a call to arms, the figure moves toward you as more sounds erupt behind it. Your trained combat senses tell you there are likely 6-8 combatants coming your way.
Everyone, roll for initiative. 24 hour clock starts now.

Barnabus will hold his ground and just as the skeleton is in reach unleashes a mighty diagonal chop with Fife.
