"Here is my retelling of the grand story of the giants. I am no historian, and am certainly not a giant, but I know far more than the common folk of my world. So, listen carefully, for this story is one of great battles, of terrible losses and magnificent victories...
"Before the creation of the world of Borrelia, there were only the four primordial gods: Elanumnar, Brogon, Saevaran, and Vastril. These gods shaped the world as we know it, creating land, sea, and sky, birthing the aboreon (now called the aboleth), the krakens, and the mighty tarrasque. But then, a strange new idea came into their minds. What if they created a creature that aged, a creature that died? A creature that was… mortal.
"The first of the giants were created by Brogon, god of strength, and of the earth. They came into being some four-thousand and fifty-five years after the creation of the world, at same time as the dragons. When Brogon forged the giants, he gave them a strict hierarchy that was known as ‘the Ordning’. The empyreans, children of the gods, were ranked the highest in this hierarchy. Then came the storm giants, followed by the cloud giants, tailed by the fire giants, then the frost giants, next the stone giants, and finally the hill giants. There were no giant-kin. Among each rank of the Ordning, certain giants were chosen to become grander than others of their rank. These chosen giants were called titans, and they possessed magical powers far greater than those of their peers.
"To further bring order among his creations, Brogon decreed that the eldest empyrean would rule over all others as king. The first Giant King was a great yet power-hungry giant known as Tvathuran the Vast. When the giants first met the dragons in 4477 AC (Age of Creation), Tvathuran was eager to fight them and grow his empire. Two years later, in 4479 AC, the dragons and giants went to war, ending the Age of Creation and beginning the Dragon Age.
"The war went on for centuries, with truces made and broken, with devastation and death gnawing and tearing into both sides. Then, in 1169 DA, Golgrim the Great ascended to the throne of the giants. After a hundred and fifty year truce, many giants, including Golgrim, were eager for bloodshed. Golgrim declared war on the dragons, and over the course of the next hundred years, the dragons lost more and more ground, and the ferocity of the giants was unmatchable. Finally, in 1291 DA, Golgrim the Great slew Cordathril the Elder, one of the strongest and most ancient wyrms ever to have lived. Reluctantly, the dragons agreed to a truce that cost them almost all of their land.
"But in 1299 DA, just eight years later, a brave and cunning silver dragon called Thauraeln the Bold launched a surprise attack against the giant fortress of Haernor, where Golgrim resided. There was a fierce battle, and when it was over, Golgrim was dead and Haernor all but destroyed.
"After the death of Golgrim, a far more tactical-minded giant named Sorgon the Honorable became the Giant King. But he was no match for the wit and courage of Thauraeln, who had been named the first and only king of the dragons. After the arrival of the elves in Borrelia, Sorgon pleaded with their king, Róndr, for military support. But before he could convince the fey sovereign, he had to depart, for the rebuilt fortress of Haernor was under siege, and if it fell, the war would be lost.
"And so, Sorgon fought Thauraeln in single combat outside the walls of Haernor. But Thauraeln’s might was greater, and so Sorgon fell outside of Haernor, and it seemed that the dragons had won the war for eternity and forevermore. And they would have, if not for the arrival of the elves. With their aid, the giants managed to force the dragons to retreat, lest they be struck down by wood and stone.
"While a foolish king might have continued to wage war, Thauraeln was not foolish. He agreed to a truce with both the elves and the giants. This truce became known as the Treaty of Thauraeln. And for a while, there was peace. But then, in 1432 DA, Thauraeln was lured into an ambush and killed by a group of giants eager for blood and death. His death inflamed the dragons with anger, and they declared war upon the giants, raining doom from above with bolts of flame and light.
"But Thauraeln had left no heir. And so the dragons fought as they had before: without a leader or a strategy. The war quickly turned into a bloodfest that lasted over three hundred years, coinciding with many other events, such as the arrival of humans in Borrelia, the birth of the first half-elf, and the signing of a treaty between the humans, elves, and dwarves. Still, few casualties had occurred. But in 1721 DA, a failed spell of immense power shattered the monolithic Cordial Mountains, slaying thousands on both sides. The age of dragons and titans was no more.
"Today, the few remaining giants reside in the giant city of Makimas on the Crooked Peninsula, or in the Crags of Desolation, the fractured remains of the Cordial Mountains. Dragons and giants are still fierce enemies, but they no longer have the means to hold a war with one another. And for that, we should all be thankful.
"The dragons and giants of old live no longer. But they are reborn in ink and word, in the stories of what the world once was, and in the tales of magic and might, and of the secrets of the arcane that were lost to time so long ago."

Lars tries to squeeze in wherever there is room... "I guess I'm along for the ride too!"
