Atheros stands before the sign at the entrance to the Gelded Goblin. He had heard tell from a local farmer that there was work to be had here in town and here it was. Lord Dansworth Ratheen himself was footing the bill for this one. 250 Gold to travel to the local gnome village of Dahish and discover why the mushroom deliveries have stopped.
"He must really love his mushrooms." observes a nearby human of average height with dark brown hair cropped short.
"Indeed." is Atheros' only reply as he returns his attention to the poster.
A few moments pass and two more individuals approach the sign. One enormous fellow with a face only a mother could love, and the other a gnome with furtive dark eyes. The giant snatched down the poster and screws it up close to his face.
"I dont think you should do that Gorm." hisses the gnome.
"Why not?" the giant grumbles. "What's it say Gill?"
"Pass it here!" the gnome snaps and his companion reluctantly hands it over. The gnome reads in silence for a moment or two.
"Bloody Dahish!" he snaps after a minute, "It would be wouldn't it! We've got a job." he calls up to the giant.
"Ow much?" Gorm asks
"100 Gold." Gill lies as he fold the parchment away into his tunic.
"Hold on!" the human interrupts, "We were here first."
"I was here first." corrects Atheros.
The gnome look at each of them for a long moment before nodding, "Fair enough, you help is accepted. Let's go." and with that the gnome marches off toward the town gates with the giant Gorm lumbering behind him.
"I suppose we should follow." the human says with a resigned grin.
Atheros simply grunts as he shoulders his bow and begins to trail the gnome.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The party slowly get to know each other as they travel south toward Dahish, though Atheros remains aloof revealing little more than his name. It turns out that Gorm and Gill are newly acquainted following an incident with a group of local bandits to the west of town. Azeloth is a student of the arcane arts and as he tells it, is just "passing through" and in need of some coin. Entering the edge of the southern forest the air grows still and Atheros thinks it strange that no birds or animals can be heard.
A sudden crashing of feet grabs the groups attention and they peer ahead to see a gnome running toward them, his eyes wild. He appears to be being chased by what can only be described a living mushrooms. Animated fungi.
"What the...?" Exclaims the human, Azeloth.
Atheros draws his bow and lets loose an arrow at one of the approaching creatures. Attack: 16 Damage: 6
The arrow pierced creature is struck by the beam of freezing energy and with a loud pop it explodes into a hundred icy shards. The fleeing gnome yelps in surprise and comes skidding to a halt next to his unexpected allies.
The gnome Gill draws two wicked looking short swords and charges to the right bringing his blades down toward the nearest enemy. Attack: 16 Damage: 6 Attack: 22 Damage: 7 Sneak 4
The axe smashes it into the earth and will a final stamp of triumph Gorm squishes is beneath his heel.
"What the hell were they?" Gills spits as he cleans his blades on his breaches.
"M....mm..mushrooms." cries the strange gnome. His eyes are wide with wonder and fear and he had the look of someone drunk or similar. He giggles as he looks around at the party.
"and who are you?" Gill asks as he approaches.
"The names Snelvig," he offers before covering his mouth with his hand, he closes his eyes for a moment and let's loose a tremendous fart.
"Sorry!, thanks. Thank you I mean...for..." he waves his hands at the mushrooms.
"We are travelling to Dahish is it far?" Azeloth asks.
"Ha! How presipishush, you must come with me. I live there you know, but I am a terrible cook." he makes a shushing sound, "but tell nobody."
The afternoon wears on as they travel deeper into the forest, following the intoxicated gnome. Every now and again Snelvig goes dancing off to chase butterflies or other unseen wonders and they have to keep bringing him back.
At last they reach the outskirts of Dahish and find the village deserted. "Where is everyone?" Gorm asks, looking around.
"Oh they'll be hiding in the chapel." Snelvig announces brightly, "Here we are!" he points toward a small hut nearby and leads the party toward it. It is starting to grow dark now and in the distance the party can see a large building in the centre of the village emitting torchlight.
"Is that the Chapel?" asks Azeloth.
"Yes that's it." confirms the gnome, "I will take you over later, but first let me thank you properly for saving me. The least I can do is offer a hot meal and flagon of ale."
"Of course." the human nods, considering more that it might be wise to ensure that this gnome is coming down from his high before leaving him along out here.
Gorm is forced to sit in the gnomes yard to large to enter through the tiny door. Gill enters without a problem and Azeloth crouches to follow. Atheros remains without, silent as ever with an arrow knocked and his eys trained on the distant chapel. Snelvig stokes the fire and serves up a hot meat stew, even carrying some outside for Gorm and the elf.
Moments later the strange gnome is drifting off to sleep. The after effects of the mushroom he ate finally overtaking him. Gill takes a look at the fellow. Med Check : 12
"Think he's sleeping it off." the gnome guesses, "S'pose we best go introduce ourselves at the chapel."
The party make their way out to the chapel and call out to get the attention of those within. After a while the door opens and a young priestess steps out holding a lantern aloft.
"You shouldn't be here, its not safe." she calls out.
"We have been sent by the Lord of the nearby town to look into the mushroom shortage." Azeloth calls back and she barks a laugh.
"Ha! if only there were a shortage." she frowns then considering her words, "Some mischief or magic has brought the damned things to life crazy as it sounds."
"We've seen em." Gill cuts in.
At the sound of his voice the priestesses eyes widen, "Well as I live and breath Gill Brightburrow." then she adds flatly, "We thought you were dead."
"Sorry to disappoint Marisha." Gill replies.
"Well you better all come in." she grumbles giving Gill a withering glare. "It's going to be a squeeze."
Once again Gorm is forced to remain without as the others go inside.
"So do you know what is happening?" Gill asks.
"No. I dont know anything but I have a few ideas." Marisha replied in clipped tones.
"And what might they be?" Azeloth asks politely giving Gill a questioning look. The gnome just shrugs as Marisha begins to answer.
"It started about a month ago. The crop just up and came to life, started wandering off into the forest. Anyone goes near them and they attack. We have records here of similar events... wait let me show you." and with that she scurries off to the back of the chapel, only to return with a thick dusty tome held in her hands. She places it down on the nearby table and opens it.
"Listen..." she begins, "Here the details are sketchy but this record from over a century ago speaks of a demonic entity. A creature that could both poison and animate the forest around it and bend it to will."
At last she closes the book. "I fear this demon may have returned."

His attention wanders then for a time as he appears to be snatching invisible objects out of the air in front of him."
"Well that explains why no mushrooms are making it back to town." Azeloth observes.
"Ha! Gotta catch the little bastards first...and even then..." he screws up his eyes, "They taste very strange."
"Well that explains his state of mind!" Gill laughs.
"Let's get you home." Azeloth helps Snelvig to his feet and motions for him to lead the way.
