Shayne's amused and annoyed by the tree... But will not let it win. So he steps up, stabs one of his daggers into the non-flaming side of the tree, then walks away leaving the dagger embedded as deep as he could into the tree. Shayne will wander back to the rest of the non-enflamed party.
(Injuring the tree and with direct contact? Noted.)
Shayne's hair catches on fire.
But only along his right side. His left remains untouched by the flames.
As Shayne moves to walk away, he feels his right boot stuck in the dirt. His foot hurts. It feels as if his bones are twisting out of it and pushing through the sole!
(1 more point of damage. DC 12 DEX saving throw. Failure means his right foot roots to the spot. )
Eric thinks the horn blast came from maybe a mile or two distant, someplace in the woods on the same side of the stream as the enchanted tree on its grassy hill.
Alyna and the others see Shayne catch fire!
(I will hold off and allow real time for others to post, as Shayne has been up on the hill messing with/investigating the enchanted tree for about half a minute of game time. Not a long time, but now that he's visibly burning, I think it would be unfair to advance without seeing how others may not react to his situation.)
"Holly and Ivy," Xylys yells as he rushes toward Shayne. "He's on fire! Anyone got a blanket!" He is bordering on the edge of panic as this whole situation has almost unnerved him. "Should we try to kill the tree? Water, that's it, water." He grabs his water bottle and trys to slosh water onto Shayne's burning side.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Panic is a mechanism that strengthens the gene pool.
Watching as his companion begins to catch fire, he calmly walks to the streams edge and scoops up some moss and mud. Mixing it together in his hands as he returns to the hill he walks upto Shayne and lays the cool, mucky mixture on his head - hoping to extinguish the fire there. "I would walk away, well try to. This is one fight you will not win. Mother Earth will see to it you don't."
"No, Shayne, no! You do not wound the trees in this forest..." The bard was taken care of but the tree was not - Alyna ran straight to the burning tree, keeping to the cool side but more caring to reach the dagger and to yank it out. If the wound on the tree still stays, she would try to "Cure Wound" it.
(You all are walking into damage... Brave and thanks, but if we all burn up don’t be blaming me gor you following my bad example!)
Dex Save : 12 Upon starting on fire Shayne would be pulling his cloak right around himself to smother the flames as best he could.
Shayne manages to beat down the flames in his clothes and at the same time extricate his right foot from the soil. But the roots are still forming in his boot, so if he sticks around.... Xylys splashing water helps, but the hot feeling persists. Eric's wet poultice extinguishes the flames in Shayne's hair. The burning sensation on his right side continues.
The heat sears the right sides of those who go up to Shayne or draw near the tree (1 point heat damage).
Alyna removes the dagger. Sap drips upward, returning to the source and the gouge in the bark closes. No sign remains that Shayne struck the wood with his steel.
“Well, unless anyone has any torches with which to finish the job, I’m all out of ideas...” Shayne says with a shrug before wandering back to the water and trying to see in it how badly his hair got singed.

(Question: Does "wandering " mean he's taking his time getting back downhill? I need to know if he's moving quickly enough to avoid suffering more fire damage. The one-side of the body heat effect will not stop just because of water or a poultice. This is an enchantment.)
(Sorry, I should have been more clear. When I said: “Upon starting on fire Shayne would be pulling his cloak right around himself to smother the flames as best he could.” What I meant is that Shayne does what he can to get the flames out, including moving away from the tree that seemed to have caused them in the first place. My apologies, I had assumed that part of putting the flames out would be getting away from the flame creator because without doing that then there really is no point in putting out the original flames.... I shall strive to be clearer and provide much more minute detail in the future.)
(He said he is trying to see his hair reflection in the water. And anyway, since tree is fine Alyna will bring her attention to Shayne now - with the healing. First, help him to get to the water, then Cure Wounds8
"We are not touching this tree, what's wrong with you?! Though, I have no idea what that tree is - do not remember even any story about it." She wrinkled her forehead thinking ( History 1 ) but did not recall a thing. "But we do not attack anything, unless it's about to kill us, may be. But even so, we ca try to talk first."

(No need for minute detail . I just wanted to be clear about timing. It matters in this particular situation how long he remains on the hill. Under any other circumstances I'd simply assume the movement as part of your declared action, as you suggest.)

The young woman's healing magic completely restores Shayne's health, banishing pain. In the rippling moonlit waters of the stream, he sees shortened, singed strands sticking out from under Eric's muddy poultice. If the rest looks like that, it may take weeks to grow out again. His clothes are scorched and dampened in patches on the right side, but not very badly damaged.
His left side is quite untouched.
Up on the hill, the enchanted tree remains as it was when first Shayne and the others saw it, green on the left side and blazing on the right, with the fire never crossing over the midline.
(Right and left - when we look from the other side of the hill it's "left-and-right", right? Or does the fire remains to the right no matter from what point you are looking at the tree?)

(The right side of the tree as it appeared to you from the stream and that side of the hill. The fire does not leap about to switch sides or pull any other strange tricks, besides burning on one side of the tree and leaving the other untouched. All of you who took damage felt it only on the right sides of your bodies, no matter which way you turned or how you approached the tree. If you wish to roll an Arcana check, you may. History was a bust, as you noted earlier. That nat 1. )
Arcana is not her thing either but since DM kindly allows it - 6
(No useful insights or information from that roll. Who knows what this enchanted tree's nature or purpose may be? In the land of the fairies, things are strange.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xylys scratches his head, (23Arcana) “Seems to me I heard something about this weird sort of stuff, let cogitate on this a bit,” he says as he plops to the ground, a very serious expression on his face.

After some thought, Xylys will realize that some kind of sympathetic magical effect must have been at work. The right side of the tree burns, and Shayne was torched only on his right side when he remained near the tree and persisted in molesting it (If 'molesting' is the right word for ranting at a tree and stabbing it; nothing indicates the tree has any more consciousness or personality than an ordinary plant. It could, though. Who knows?). Xylys himself felt an uncomfortable heat on just his right, and he was only up there for a few seconds. Destroying the tree might end the effect. Quite possibly, destroying the tree might also result in a powerful mystical backlash as opposite forces of growth and destruction held in tension were unleashed explosively, a burst of magic that could kill everyone nearby. As to what the tree's purpose might be, Xylys cannot do more than speculate. It could be a signpost. It could be a warning. A beacon. Perhaps a well of magical forces? Or maybe it is a spontaneous and natural growth in this bizarre reflection of the mortal world.

Yes, she sees him stab the tree. She also hears him hurling insults at it. And she sees that he is now burning-- but only on the right side.
