Velyra seems less perturbed by the sudden disruption than most, continuing her meal quietly. After the situation settles down and they all finish their food, she looks longingly towards the door. "Perhaps we should go back to the Belerac manor now? Tomorrow, we can try finding Clayus at the Sanctum to see if he's still spooked. Then we can deal with our friends on the other end of the sending stone."
Silthras nods, "Yes; I still have more reading to work through. Let's walk past the temple where our friends works on our way back; I'd like to know how big it is."
"If the plan is just to go back and sleep, we'd like to go visit some people since we're back in 'tide." Usul says to the group. "But no need for everyone to join. We're faster alone anyway."
As they make they prepare to leave, Syl perks up on hearing Usul's plan. "Are you sure you don't want any company? I wouldn't mind tagging along. I know it's your city but...Well any of us going somewhere alone freaks me out a little."
The party splits ways for the time being, as Usul heads west and the others take a road south heading back towards the Council Ward. It's slower going without Usul's guidance, but you're able to remember the way back. Once in the Council Ward again, you stop by the stairs leading up to another walled in area you saw earlier. There is a double portcullis at the top of the stairs, about half a dozen guards stand at attention, but people pass freely through them. You can see what is unmistakably the Crystal Sanctum in the western corner. The structure is nearly as tall as the walls surrounding this entire area, its roof held up by enormous white crystalline columns - you can't make out the details from here, but you can see intricate patterns carved into them. Even from this distance, you estimate its area is in the 10's of thousands of square feet. After checking it out for a bit, you continue your walk back to the Belerac manor. One of the servants at the gate lets you in the gate without question this time, "Master Belerac is in his study at this time, though he wanted you to know that you are welcome to interrupt if you need to speak." He says, leading you up to the manor proper. After opening the door for you all he leads you inside, and shows you to your rooms on the second floor. Given the size of the manor, you aren't surprised to find you each have your own. They have empty wardrobes to store your clothes, writing desks, and wash basins. The sun has dipped below the horizon at this point, but there's still time left in the night if you wish to do anything else.
It isn't long for Usul before he crosses through the gates to the Hearth Ward, the stone roads of Whitecliff behind you, and the familiar dirt paths of where he grew up beneath his feet now. He follows the winding roads through the dense ward, passing by relatively few people on his way to his destination. Even after all this time, the Hearth Ward is still fairly low population. After about fifteen minutes of cutting through alleyways, Usul finds himself at his destination, a wooden multi-storied building with a gabled red roof, perhaps about the size of an inn. Smoke rises from the chimney stack atop the roof, and through the windows you can see the flickering glow of the fireplace.
Hopping up the stairs of the deck, you open the door and walk inside. Walking through the short entry way into the den, you're met with a chorus of "Usul!" as about ten young children jump up from their positions next to the fire place and mob you. Sitting in a rocking chair with a hardbound book in her hands is a elven woman with long brunette hair, wearing the same old dark robes you're used to. Odrade smiles warmly upon seeing you, closing the book in her hands and waiting patiently for the children to finish their interrogation. You can see a few of the toys you had sent from Redvale manor scattered about. After entertaining the little ones, the older kids eventually make their way down to hear from you. While you're in the middle of passing on the wisdom of your urchin ways, Odrade ushers them away, inviting you into the kitchen to talk alone.
You spend some time exchanging small talk, while she makes a mug of hot chocolate for you while you're here. She tells you of these unmarked "gifts" they've received recently. Knowing she speaks of your donations, you're pleased to find that it was more than enough to purchase one of the adjacent buildings, hire a crew to construct an attaching hall, and furnish the new building for rooms. The kids would soon have more space for themselves, which the older ones would particularly enjoy.
As the conversation winds down, a distant look. "Anner is missing." She says quietly. One of the older kids in the orphanage, a halfling lad about fourteen years old. As she says the words, you realize that you had only counted 17 heads so far. "He's been gone for about a week. He was running with one of those bloody street crews I always tried to keep you all away from." Letting out a sigh, she continues, "I've checked with the constables, and they don't have him. So he's not in jail at least...I'm just worried still."
As he and Dib play with the kids Usul smiles and feels comfortable back in the place he called home for so long. Even the smells are the same. And Ma always did make the best choco. Even adding a small dollop of expensive cream. Though hopefully they'll be able to afford more of it now. Talking with Ma and sipping the chocolate, he occasionally looks over at the little ones and pops dib here or there much to their delight, but is mainly focused on the story of the missing Anner. He had a pretty good idea that it was one of two, maybe three groups in the area that Anner would have joined up with, hoping it wasn't the Sards, they were the roughest of the groups in the area, though none were particularly friendly.
"Anner's a good kid. But life is tough out there for us. Though we are glad you got some 'help'." He says first seriously, and then with a bit of a grin. "We know a couple people to check with. And don't worry about us! We've come back to town with some really good friends. We're sure if we ask they'll help as well."Pausing he thinks for a bit and adds, "We'll be in town for a few days at least. Let us ask around!"
After that he's happy to stick around and talk for a bit, but know he shouldn't stay long. More so now that he's gotta check in with someone on the way back to meet the others. He knows an older kid, (though not really a kid anymore...) who kinda showed him the ropes when he was new to the city. Though not really friends exactly, it was someone he felt he could count on to at least tell him what's happening on the streets. A young skinny Tiefling named Jamis, now probably 22 or 23, who usually in the evening would be trying to fleece some drunk workers out of their coin with some street scams (ball and cups, 3 cards, etc).
Unlike Usul, who seemed to be thriving and back in his element in Sonatide, Silthras had only visited the city a very few brief times. Delivering or picking up messages in dark alleys and guarding clandestine meetings did not offer the opportunity to experience the city itself. As he walked around town he realized that, while he had been to many places in the empire, he had true knowledge – the kind Usul had – of only two: The unofficial winter retreat of the Greyshirts at Ellesford, and Mirin’Thal, where he had studied sorcery. The town he was born in – more a small village, really – was but a distant memory, one dominated by a longing to be somewhere, anywhere, else.
He wondered what it was like to have a place to call home, but shrugged the thought away. He had seen to many homes destroyed by the whims of great powers to attach much weight to having one of his own. His mother had seemed happy to live in one place when he was young, but now, as best as he could tell, she was back in her element doing what she always said she was born for: Banging heads to knock some sense into them, and if that failed, then just banging heads.
As they walked past the portcullis to the temple area he cast a quick professional eye over it while appearing to gawk like any out-of-town passerby. It was an impressive structure, and didn’t really give him much hopes of escape should a visit become ‘awkward’. That would be a problem for the following day. For the moment he allowed himself to relax and enjoy the rest of the journey back to Houise Belerac doing what he had never been able to do before: taking in the sights and studying the people and buildings.
Back at the house he was glad of the opportunity to read the old accounts of the watchers. Working together with Velyra and Kal they seemed to make good individual progress, and he happily shared his insights with them, then asked the question that had been preying on his mind for several days.
“Do you think we should try to find the other lights from the map...the other watchers? I feel sure that’s what our adversaries are doing.”
A brief look of relief washes over her face, and she smiles. "You've brought friends? That's wonderful..." A more stern look descends her features for a moment, "but do not get yourself into trouble trying to find him. Losing one of you is bad enough, I don't think we could handle two." Her look softens again, and you spend a little bit more time chatting. She asks about these "really good friends" of yours, though she doesn't ask directly what you've been doing with yourself lately. Knowing you need to get on your way, you say your goodbyes. Ma once again warns you to be careful before letting you go.
From the Home you go about checking all of Jamis' old haunts - the usual corners and side streets where he'd set up his games of "chance" to earn some coin. You're able to find him rather quickly, right around the corner from one of the less-traveled taverns in the Hearth Ward. As you approach, you see a few men hunched over his small weathered table as he rapidly rearranges three-cards face down. You stand back and watch for a bit. As his usual bit goes, Jamis lets them win a few rounds to lure in their confidence. His money is quickly won back as he starts the sleight of hand trick. With a final defeated groan, the men walk away from the table, out three times as many coins as they had won.
The tiefling looks up with a toothy grin, "Usul! Now there's a familiar face I haven't seen in a while." His smile turns a bit mischievous as he turns the cards over in his hand, "Did you come looking for me to try a game?"
"You're talking about the map table we found in the ruins? A similar one was found among the Astrium. It lit a point right on top of those ruins, that's why I was there in the first place." Velyra says, recalling the memory. "My read is that it didn't light up until someone had already activated the ruins somehow. I don't think we can count on it to help us find anymore locations. Unless someone else stumbles into one..."
"I'll send a message later to make sure, but I'm certain Aldun would notify me if another point on that map lit up at the Astrium"
A stray thought enters her mind, a realization from some of the information Kal had unveiled earlier. "But those two that were with Iven could still be alive somewhere couldn't they?"
Silthras nods, "You are right." He says slowly, nodding. "Perhaps...we should study the books and try to find where the events took place, and if there are references to the other watchers places of refuge. If we can tie a few names to places we know, I may be able to locate them based on journey times and so forth. At least limit it to a few possibilities, and if there are known ancient ruins on the site..." His voice trails off as he recalls doing similar things to track movement of troops in the past.
"Wait a moment..." He grins a lop-sided grin. "We have the name of an ancient and powerful Fey...would there be a way to contact them? Or even...given we know the names and have some details of the others...I even know what some of them look like...might there be some magic we could try?"
"Jamis! The same 'ol tricks still workin' eh?"Usul says with a grin as Dib scampers up to his shoulder sniffing at his old friend. "We've learned a few new tricks actually. If you're up for a game. Though not for coin. We need some information. We're trying to find a kid who disappeared. Probably got mixed up with the wrong folks... Figured you might know."
He's then happy to play whatever game Jamis was doing, taking turns controlling the cards to see who 'wins' the most (both knowing the trick, but trying to 'out trick' the other). ((slight of hand - x3 just in case you want to do rounds. 1) 14, 2) 29, 3 18))
Velyra takes in a sharp breath, nodding slowly. "Emel'ohríw? It's possible...If that was her we saw, I've seen her face. And now we know her name." She hadn't ever pushed the spell to its limits before, but it seemed worth a try at least. "I can give it a go. But what do I even say to her? 'Sorry we just let your closest companion out of stasis so he could die, please help us avenge him?' "
Silthras nods, "It can't hurt...and there may be more powerful spells; ones that allow spying from a distance such as was used against us."
(( @DM Am I correct in assuming that we might have names and appearances for some of the other watchers, perhaps races as well, that might allow us to tie names to appearances? ))
"Wouldn't be the first to go missing." Jamis says impassively. Then he grins again, and motions for you to take your spot at the other side of the table. The smile fades slowly as you're able to trick him three times in a row, your face unreadable to him as he tries to guess if you threw the card normally or not. Next he takes the cards, and as you watch intently you're able to read him fairly well. The first two rounds go to you again, though he manages to trick you on the last. Still though, it was not enough for him to claim victory.
"Pffft. Alright alright. You've certainly picked up some luck since I saw you last, I'll give you that." He gathers the cards, dropping them into an inner pocket of the slightly grimy vest he wears. "So, who is it you're lookin' for mate?"
Kal quietly lets the other two talk, bouncing between half-listening and wondering over all the information they had learned recently. Dozens of questions burned through him right now, but shouting them into the void would do little good. This was infinitely more than what he had expected when answering Sybil's call for help.
Finally, he decides to join the conversation. "I think it's good we're going to have some time in Sonatide. We need to slow down and think. We've been running from one fire to the next for the past two weeks. We have this mission from Lady Anet, but I think the two of you are on the right track...Even with everything we've learned so far, we're still woefully in the dark. And as far as I can tell, we're now the only ones who know of Ravere's true history, so it's not like we can go around asking for answers, we have to find them ourselves. After we're done in Isonrence, I think we should try and find more of these ruins, if Silthras can find a way to nail down their locations."
"And the more I think about, the more it bothers me that the priest recognized the term 'Unmade.' From what I can tell, that isn't widely known or official knowledge. I suppose it's possible someone at the temple has connections to a yet unannounced finding, but I don't think we should ignore the possibility that we might have stumbled into the enemy's lap here. We might see if our host knows anything about the leadership at the temple."
"I can agree with that, there are certainly some things I'd like to figure out before we go charging off into the unknown." Velyra says. "I'm not even sure where we go from here. Certainly, we can stop whatever conspiracy is going on to aid the Unmade. But they'll wake up eventually regardless won't they? As far as I can tell, we have no real Watchers, and the device they used to destroy the Unmade is gone."
His unease about the priest is something that crossed her mind as well, though she was more afraid to voice it for fear of sounding paranoid. "It's possible. If we check out the Sanctum tomorrow we should perhaps be discreet about it."
"I agree." Says Silthras, "Caution is warranted. He was likely a junior priest yet had the confidence of the High Priestess. I hoped, therefore, that he might be some kind of adjutant -- whatever the priesthood call that -- and a way to get into speak with her discreetly."
"His demeanor led me to believe he was shocked and upset by recent events; something I would not expect from the enemy."
He starts moving towards the door in search of a servant to direct them to Belerac's study, "Kal's suggestion is good -- we should ask his lordship, and then tomorrow perhaps only a few of us should go to the sanctum, with Syl keeping in contact from outside."
