"All finished then?" Kal pokes his head into the room. Seeing his companions finishing up, he nods and crosses over the foyer into the next room, sword drawn but pointed at the ground. "See if something wants to kill us in here,"he says, giving the room a careful once over before stepping aside to the let the rest of the group look over it if they wish. Once more, while they search, he'll keep an eye out for anything trying to sneak up on them.
The room on the other side of the foyer is a dining area, with a long wood table taking up the center of the room. A diamond pattern of gray and white marble makes up the floor, with a maroon and gold trimmed rug underneath the table. A small fireplace is inset on the north wall, flanked on either side by two doors. A cabinet on the southern wall is stacked and filled with different bottles of wine, all unopened. Further into the room, you can see another open entryway leading into the ruined western wing of the manor. You can see the collapsed wall, burned woodwork, and feel a stiff breeze from the outside.
Looking at the table, you easily notice something out of place. Three plates sit with food scraps on them. While the food has clearly gone bad at this point, it looks like something that's been sitting for weeks, not years. A silver candlestick and fine cutlery are also on the table. A glass cabinet on the north wall contains porcelain plates, elegant goblets and glasses, and velvet linen cloths.
Realizing that this room contains multiple entrances, Kal would decide that posting up inside the room would be a better move this time, carefully keeping watch on the western entryway and occasionally glancing behind where the group came from. Similar to Velyra, he would feel a prickling on the back of his neck, a foreboding sense of being watched.
As a note, the "darkness" on the map is not actual dark, it's merely indicative of things that are out of your line of sight, or places you haven't been yet. The manor is brightly lit in most places, as the curtain-less windows provide more than enough light.
"Perhaps that little girl wasn't so wrong after all..." Velrya murmurs, eyeing the leftover food on the table. Her gaze goes to the far end of the other room they can see, where daylight leaks in freely through the broken wall. "But it doesn't make sense, this place isn't defensible."
She's not particularly interested in going through this room like the previous one. When the others ready, she'll say "might as well keep going," gesturing towards the west.
Walking through the room Usul casts an invisible mage hand and sends it to grab a bottle of wine. As it floats down he says with a grin, “We can share this back at the inn tonight.” He then makes sure to be the last out of the room, following the others, and directs his mage hand to scoop up the silver candle stick and some cutlery into his quiver where they would disappear.
Silthras glances cautiously around the room then moves to the western exit and looks outside at the collapsed area. Are there signs of recent activity or, perhaps, of a way underneath the manor?
"With wine, there's probably a cellar. And the undead like the security of earth" he says. "But this place seems to have enough mysteries above ground for now".
Usul successfully manages to stash 5 gp worth of cutlery and the candlestick(5 sp) without being noticed. The group then moves into the room over, which has been partially destroyed by the fire that ruined the house years ago. Ash and debris cover most of the marble floor in here.
A chair and foot rest sits in one destroyed corner, a small cabinet stacked with fictional tomes in the other. The western wall has completely fallen in here, leaving the burned remains of what was once on an awning strewn across the ground. Looking out, you can see the ruin of what was once most likely a garden of some kind - the burned corpses of two trees remain, and ashen pots(mostly cracked) litter the ground.
A wooden door lies to the north, and next to it, a flight of stairs leading downward to an iron door. The metal is someone rusted, two different keyholes rest above the handle. Along each step, you can find dots of dark red droplets, dried blood.
Looking to the door, Usul says, “We’re sure we can get through the locks... but... it looks kinda creepy. Perhaps we should explore above ground before venturing beneath?” He’s clearly a bit unsettled going down seeing the droplets of blood, though does not feel in danger, as his group is quite strong, he’s still not a fan of these undead, especially the clawed ones that Sil had so kindly reminded him about just a few minutes ago.
Kal glances down at the blood leading down the steps and after a moment of consideration, nods in agreement with Usul. "We'll save it for last then."Gripping his sword a little more tightly now, he moves to the door on the north wall and swings it open.
The door opens into a hallway with a stone floor, to the right, the hallway ends abruptly after a pair of doors on either side of the hallway. To the left, it bends around a corner going further into the west wing of the manor, eventually leading to a door that leads back outside. The rooms in this section of the manor are completely destroyed, and their contents reduced to ash and rubble. What remains of the floor in these rooms is little more than charred wood, and the western walls have completely fallen in. Above, you can see where the second floor has also partially caved in, allowing a glimpse of the second floor's ceiling.
Velyra steps into one of the ruined rooms briefly, moving some of the rubble or ash aside with her feet. "The kids' rooms I imagine." She says with a grimace, recalling Paten's explanation that some had perished in this fire. "Perhaps grief drove them to leave their things behind. I'm not sure I would want to take any reminders with me either."
"Maybe," Kal replies, looking over the destroyed room. "But I'm beginning to think what's happening in this region with the undead has been a long time in the making and involved this family somehow."
Unless his companions want to move outside or pick through the rubble, he'll move back down the hall and open the door to the room they haven't explored yet.
Silthras grunts, then nods at Val. "Likely something dwells beneath, but looking above first would be the cautious thing to do. Reduce the risk should we be forced to flee..."
You step into the next room, with a cold stone floor and no decorations. Crates of rotted fruits and vegetables line the walls, as well as shelves of knives, ladles, pots, pans, and other kitchen tools. An L-shaped table takes up the center of the room, covered in foodstuffs that's gone bad, but perhaps only by about a month or so. There's a woodburning stove connected to the south wall, and a pile of logs behind it. A set of doubledoors on one side of the room leads into what is undoubtedly a storeroom for the kitchen, while another door on the north side leads to the outside.
A hallway runs out from the other wall, to the unexplored areas of the manor's east wing.
"This place has far too many rooms." The knight says, taking a glance down the hallway. Kal then walks back across and opens the double doors on the left side of the kitchen, taking a quick look inside for anything that might be trying to get the jump on them.
You open the doors to a cool, stone floored storeroom. Some bags of grain have fallen over, spilling their now rotted grains onto the floor. Barrels and crates fill the room, and yet another set of double doors on the north wall lead to the outside.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Velyra steps behind the others into the store room, blinking as the cooler air hits her face. After a quick prayer for guidance, she begins poking through some of the crates or barrels to see what the contain.
Finding a crowbar hanging on the wall, you begin to crank off the lids from some of the crates. The first few have some things you would typically expect: clay jugs of cooking oil, jars of pickled vegetables or jelly, and some bags of dried of beans. As you open one barrel filled to the brim with rice grains, you notice something peculiar, a small brown piece of cloth sticking out.
Digging deeper into the rice and pulling it out, you find a cloth bag, tied with a piece of string. Opening it up, you find the following items:
A rounded gray stone, with an arcane rune etched into it and painted white.
A small coin purse, containing 25 gold coins.
Two rolled up pieces of parchment, one larger than the other. The smaller contains diagrams of what appear to be doors, pedestals, and altars. What's most surprising is the script underneath each diagram, written in Celestial. The words and phrases don't have any immediate meaning to you. (examples include 'Where the first Star fell', 'Friends of Varemut', 'Emel'ohríw's Wrath'). The larger piece of parchment is a crudely drawn map of the region, with red circles drawn in various spots on the mountain range. All have been crossed out, except for one, denoting a location in the mountains just west of Feycrest. The location coincides with what you've been told about where the mine is.
A silver signet ring, with a cat's eye emblazoned on it.
