Conscious of the monstrosity that lurks behind him, Silthras falls back to walk alongside Usul, his back and shoulders no longer feeling threatened by the ungodly crossbow.
With Kal leading, the group continues down the bloodied hallway. From the rear, Usul briefly puts his nose in the air, and immediately lets out a squeak. The weasel races down to the floor, and scurries to the far door on the left. It turns back to look at Usul briefly, and glances at the door - communicating images of death and decay through the telepathic bond. As you approach the door yourselves, you are likewise hit with the scent of a rotting corpse. Within the room, Dib hears no movement. Before the party makes their next move, the weasel returns to its place on the gnome's shoulder.
Velyra raises an eyebrow again at the half-elf as she moves past him, following the knight down the hall. Were the present situation not so in need of their focus, she might have continued. But now the threat of danger was becoming more present, and he seemed to realize that as well. They could squabble with each other later.
"Ready when you are." She replies to Kal, preparing herself for what they might find in the room.
As you push open the room's door, you're hit with an even more intense stench, stinging the nostrils and causing eyes to water. The trail of blood paints a pathway from the door to a bed on the opposite wall, where you can see an unmoving figure hidden beneath the covers facing away from you. Tufts of black hair sticking out from underneath the blanket. The room itself is a bedroom, furnished with a writing desk, wardrobe, and a fireplace in the corner. Lavender rugs coat the floor, scenic mountainscape paintings decorate the walls, and a chest with no lock on it sits on the east wall.
You pull the covers back, as the smell reaches an even greater intensity. The body of what was once a young woman, perhaps in her mid twenties lies in the bed, dressed in black garb with leather armor on. Her hair is black cut short, and she has a light three-slash scar on her cheek. There is a dagger tucked into her boot, and a traveling pack turned out on the floor beside the bed. Her throat has been torn open, blood staining the sheets of the pillows and bed. Her eyes appear to have been burned out, leaving nothing but blackened sockets...Something Kal, Silthras, and Usul have seen before.
Silthras Grimaces, "So...that other fellow...." he puts his kerchief over his nose, but it barely has any effect, "...he was not unique. There is something...something evil and...intelligent....at work here. Why the eyes?"
He glances back in the direction of the cellar, then returns his focus on the room. He takes the dagger from her boot and examines it closely, then looks at her hands for signs of rings, perhaps matching the one that they found, and finally at the emptied pack.
Does it look like she was killed IN the bed, of placed in it after dying?
Does it look like she was killed IN the bed, of placed in it after dying?
There is a trail of blood from the room next door, to this one, to the bed. The covers have been soaked with blood, but perhaps not as much as you would expect if they had been killed in the bed.
The dagger has a slightly curved handle, and seems to be custom made to fit a more slender hand. Other than that, the blade appears to be normal and of average make. There are no rings on her fingers, nor do you see anything like a tanline indicating she regularly wore one. The emptied pack contents on the floor contain all the things you might expect: a bedroll, rations, waterskin, tinderbox, etc...In addition, it also contains a hooded lantern, crowbar, hammer, parchment paper, and a charcoal pencil.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"The more we find, the more questions we raise. Hopefully we find more answers than questions in the rest of the manor." While the others search the room, Kal moves back to the door, occasionally peeking out into the hallway to keep watch.
"That badly wounded, I doubt she put the covers on herself" Silthras says. He nods to Kal, "Yes, definitely a building mystery."
Silthras says "I'm sorry" quietly, then focuses for a moment, and shifts the clothing around her collar to check for hidden amulets or signets on a chain around her neck before turning to Kal. "Perhaps we should follow the blood to the other room?"
Grimacing still, he nods. "Yes...yes..." he closes his eyes and swallows, moving his now highly scented kerchief back to his nose and mouth. "On the road here...the messenger the town sent. He too...his eyes were the same."
The spectral hand appears, moving aside the collar of the slain woman's top. Nothing hangs from around her neck.
As Kal and Usul keep watch outside the room, nothing approaches. The house seems utterly still, save for the occasional breeze as wind gusts pick up outside. Following the blood trail back to the next room, you shove the door open to a built-in bathhouse. The floor in here is a plain stone, with tannish-yellow bath rugs laying on the floor outside each of the three separate bath stalls. There are some cabinets in the room, and a large drain sits in the center. The stone here is still wet with water than has been dyed red with blood. Next to one of the stalls, you can see a pile of black clothing similarly to the woman's, with a red arm hanging out of the tub.
Silthras shoves his scented kerchief firmly over his nose again in anticipation of the sensory onslaught. "I've seen plenty of battlefields in my time, but this...this is obscene."
He moves forward warily to investigate the corpse.
While Silthras moves to investigate the corpse, Velyra will move the pile of clothing away with her feet, then crouch down to look through it for any pockets. "A cult of some kind perhaps? The eyes being removed seems almost ritualistic."

Kal watches the weasel's display and looks back to Usul for his comment. "One way to find out I suppose."
"Everyone ready?" if there are no objections, he'll throw open the door to the room.
Silthras looks back where they came from, then turns to Kal and nods.
Velyra raises an eyebrow again at the half-elf as she moves past him, following the knight down the hall. Were the present situation not so in need of their focus, she might have continued. Kal steals a glance at his companions, then steps into the room, briefly sheathing his sword as he moves to the bed to rip the cover off.

If everyone is done investigating the corpse and the room, Kal moves out into the hall and throws open the other door.
