As Kal moves to step through, Silthras looks around at the room he is in that is alsready barely examined. "We should not go far".
He listens quietly as Usul describes the symmetric design of the room with the six portals and the distant stairs, then pulls out the book with the map and tries to find something matching it. He glances at Velyra, "Let's see if we can find the room on the map, you know the language, and I know maps..."
"That's a good idea," Velyra says, pouring over the diagrams to look help look for anything that might match something in this room. "I do wonder where those other platforms would take us..."
Usul moves further into the room, with Kal guiding his movements forward as the gnome peers through his familiar's senses. While this room is dimly lit by the glow of the portal, and the glowing runes on the platforms, the staircase is shrouded in total darkness.
The tiny owl flits up the stairs to the edge of the range from which its master can still see through its eyes(100 feet), hovering above the dark stone steps. Another 50 feet upward the long staircase finally ends, leveling out into a single 10 foot wide hallway...
Pouring over the diagrams on the piece of parchment, Velyra and Silthras would find nothing in this room that matches anything on it. In fact, they would notice quite readily that there are distinct differences in the architecture of things in the diagram, and the designs of this room.
With Kal ushering the gnome(still seeing through Dib), the two begin to ascend the stairs quietly. It's a bit slow going, as the human knight has to find his footing in the absolute darkness of the staircase. The pair climbs high enough for Dib to move forward more, and still allowing Usul to borrow his eyesight. The familiar flaps forward, reaching the top of the staircase. The hall turns out not to be a hallway at all, but an inverse of the bottom of the staircase. The walls spread outward in a V-shape, giving way to cavernous sized room. It extends backwards farther than the owl's darkvision can reach.
Through the owl's eyes, Usul would see the room filled from wall to wall with rotting figures, elongated arms that end in sharp claws hanging at their sides. The creatures that have harried your group since you first arrived to meet Sybil in Silverfair. They stand motionless, facing in random directions but with their heads pointed towards the ground - almost as if they were sleeping.
Usul gasps and pulls at his companion to go back down the steps, as quickly as possible while being quiet in the dark (which wouldn't be very fast of course). He then stammers, "It seems we've found their home! The clawed ones! Many many of them!"
Down at the bottom in the portal room Usul catches his breath and says, "Perhaps this is where they come from? Do these portals all around us lead to the different towns perhaps?"
"That was my suspicion when I saw the platforms..." Velyra says, warily glancing up the dark staircase. Her eyes move to the pillars in the room, then to Kal. "I believe you said you had explosive?"
She gestures back towards the stairs. "If this is their home, and where they attack the towns from...We might be able to just bring this transportation room down and leave them stranded here."
"Let us see if these portals lead anywhere then." Usul says, and heads to the nearest portal ((5 - top row 1,2; second row 3,4; 3rd row 5,6)). There, he'll follow the same protocol as before with the portal, and let Dib pop through, wait no more than a minute and summon him back for a report.
if it does lead somewhere that looks like a city/town, and dib comes back ok, Usul will repeat this with the others portals to scout them all out as well.
Silthras pales at the news of the creatures, then nods at the mention of explosives. "In the stair well, perhaps, though it would not take them long to dig it out..."
He looks at the portals and recalls the cellar in the mansion that they left. "...but it might be better to destroy the destination portals."
He waits expectantly for news from the brave Dib. "If we bury the destination, then perhaps they will die when the travel there."
Kal briefly goes through his pack, pulling out the explosives. He considers the stair case for a moment before turning towards the pillars holding up the room. "I think bringing this very room down is the most obvious choice. Afterwards, we can always go to the other towns and destroy the destination platforms."
"Let's just hope those things don't wake up anytime soon..."

"Let's just hope those things don't wake up anytime soon..."
Siltras looks around at the portals, and speaks in hushed tones, "We have no idea where they go. Searching every house and cave in and around each of the three affected towns would be nigh impossible...not to mention that there are four platforms here and only three affected towns..."
The room is filled with the bubbling sound of the liquid as the transportation platform activates with Dib atop it. A minute after being whisked away, the familiar owl returns as Usul resummons them. They impart impressions of a dimly lit room, filled with old storage boxes and cobwebs. The tiny owl was able to get a glance out of a window, revealing the room to be on the second or third floor of some building. An attic perhaps? There were other structures - but nothing recognizable from what you've seen of Feycrest. No return teleportation platform was in sight.
Satisfied that they lead to where he had guess, Usul quickly repeats the process for the others, spending about 5-6 minutes doing so. Of the six portals, four(including the first one tried) lead to the insides of various homes. One of the other two drops out on the outskirts of what is definitely Feycrest, within the treeline. The other is a small rocky cave, leading out to an outcrop that looks over a small town similar in size to Feycrest.
TOP ROW 1) Inside of a small partially destroyed church, ground floor. 2) Outskirts Feycrest.
MIDDLE ROW 3) Inside a damp room surrounded by stone. Only exit is a set of stairs leading upward. 4) Attic Room
BOTTOM ROW 5) Cave, overseeing a town you don't recognize. 6) Second floor bedroom of an abandoned home.
Getting a quick view from around all of the portals, Usul points to #2 and says, "That one looks like it leads back to Feycrest. Not sure what you all want to do, but we'd rather not spend a night down here..."
Silthras considers for a moment, then nods, "Perhaps returning to Feycrest and trying to destroy the portal with explosives before dark might be a good option. If we can destroy it, then we can come back... No...no...that doesn't work."
He frowns, and looks back at the portals. "Why don't we send some explosives through another portal, wait a few minutes, then try sending Dib through? If it's still working, we send more explosives." He nods, "Yes...yes...We can destroy as many as we can before using the Feycrest portal to come back with more explosives for the others. Lastly we return to Feycrest and blow that portal up."
"This is more complex than we could've ever imagined, and the night's sleep wasn't exactly restful." Kal says with a shrug, allaying the man's moment of forgetfulness. "If we're going to blow anything, I think this would be the spot. Best case scenario we actually destroy the platforms. Worst case they're buried under rubble, which is still a win."
"I'm in favor of ending this as quickly as possible. But if we're going to wait another day, I would like to retreat to the inn." Velyra says, lowering her voice as she keeps an eye on the stairs. "I don't want to leave the survivors undefended over night. It's a miracle that place has held on as long as it has already."
Silthras still looks conflicted and confused, and starts speaking in hushed tones. "Those things are strong. I doubt they will have trouble digging through fallen earth and rock. So...we have to hope that we can destroy the platforms themselves. Do we we think we have enough explosive for all of them?Because -- if we don't -- then they we might save one or two towns but doom the rest."
He scratches his head and looks back the way they came, "We don't even know how...or if...they return here. If they return the way we did, then to get back up the stairs they need a way past the hallowed area. Perhaps some of the rock falls...?"
He curses in frustration, "I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's just think this through...Option One...do nothing, return to town. Leave Dib at the arrival spot, while we return to the inn and share what we have learned. After sunset, and the clawed ones appear, summon Dib and get a report. Next day we return and are back to the same decision, but having shared our knowledge with the townsfolk."
"Option two...we lay a charge in the stairwell before we take Option One."
"Option Three...we lay charges next to all the portals -- putting them on them will probably trigger the teleporter -- before stepping on one, or running back through that..." he points at the shimmering door. "If we think that the Hallowed ground will keep us safe, then it allows us to observe from safety, perhaps..."
He glances around at his companions, a resigned expression on his face, "I'm out of options -- anyone else?" His gaze finally comes to rest on Usul.
"Are we sure we can get back to town through the mines that way?" Usul says quietly gesturing back towards the doorway. Then thinking for a second adds, "And if we can, that means that they can as well... We're gonna need a bigger bomb..."
Silthras laughs a little bitterly, "I believe that goes back to town -- probably though more undead -- but we could be anywhere at this point. We don't know if that is the only way in, or if there is one for each of the outbound teleporters..."

Kal will follow Usul through to keep an eye on him while he's doing Familiar stuff. What's the lighting like in there?
