You go south and turn with the passageway. It leads you 15' to the east before you reach yet another intersection.
You could continue straight, leading 15' more into a large room which seems to hold a few barrels, at least from where you can see.
You could also turn right into a 15' passage that leads into a different room. Looking from the intersection, you can see the opposite wall of the room looking more natural, not refined like the rest of the walls.
As you enter the room with the barrels, you don't see anyone in it. The room is strangely shaped but it's 40' at its widest and 45' at its longest. There are twelve large wooden barrels in the room. Four to the northern wall, four to the eastern wall and four to the southern wall. All of them are secured in place by a wooden brace. The four at the southern wall have been tapped with wooden spigots, the rest are not. The closest barrel to you from the southern section is leaking slightly, and there's a puddle of some purple liquid beneath it.
You walk out of the barrel-room and back into the intersection where you now turn left to the south. 15' south and you enter a rectangular room, 15' from north to south and 20' from east to west. To your right, the north-western corner, a set of stairs leads down and out of the room. From the south-eastern corner of the room leads another corridor, although you can't see where it leads to from where you're standing. The southern wall, across the room, the one that looked natural earlier, appears to be more than just a wall - it's a ledge or an elevated floor. Now that you're in the room, you can see the ceiling in this room is elevated to 17 ft., compared to the 7 ft. everywhere else, to make up for the ledge. On the ledge stand two gnomes - a female and a male. The female says something in Gnomish. Since neither of you speaks it, you are left in confusion. Then, the male asks in Common: "Who goes there?"
"In peace or not, I'm afraid I must ask you to leave!" The male shouts to get over the roaring waterfall's loud noise, which seems to be the loudest it's been so far. Clearly, the Gnome is well trained in shouting. "That is unless you can truly prove to be Dolgrim, whom you claim to be! If you cannot do that, you'll be better off leaving this place before we must exert force!" As he says that, the female raises her hand and three blue, glowing darts appear above her. She holds her hand high warily. It is obvious that, if you don't want to get attacked, you'll have to either retreat or prove that you really are who you claim to be.
Dolgrim seems confused by the gnome's request. Prove that I am Dolgrim? What are you talking about? Have you been drinking that human booze? I am telling you, it is not good for your head. Of course I am Dolgrim of the Frostbeard family, maybe you've heard of us before? The famous mead brewers? He?
(Ha, lucky. Didn't even notice you had -2 in Cha until now.)
The gnomes whisper something to each other, probably. Maybe they're talking normally, but with the waterfall, you can't hear anything. Eventually, the male shouts: "I'ven't drunk any human booze and I'ven't heard of the ah... Frostbread? Either. Thus, we believe a shapechanger wouldn't know of them either, so you're probably speaking the truth. You may continue." He gestures towards the exit from the north-western corner. The female, however, doesn't lower her hand and the magical darts remain.
Shapechanger? What is that about? Haven't heard about any. We came to warn you people about a dragon lurking in the area and maybe trade some of your gizmos that could help us against it. We were told we should talk with Double Thumb and... Dolgrim turns to his companions What was the other name?
Thenmer steps forward, wondering why the grumpiest of the three dwarfs had chosen himself to speak up for them. That seemed an irrational choice to him.
"I am Thenmer Earthmaker, I have lived in Phandalin for many years and worked many of the mines in this area. I am who I say I am, if any of you know Phandalin you may ask me questions, and I will answer as only a resident of that village could. We have come because the town master has asked us to come, seeking common cause against a threat to us all."
He looks on impassively, as if the truth in his words would shield him from the magic missiles the gnome woman was wielding. Quietly confident that his magical shielding would in fact stop them at need.

(We really need to sort this stuff out as a party, Thenmer is squishy but he has decent charisma and some social skill proficiencies)
The gnome seems convinced. "Very well, Thenmer," he says, "you may procceed as well." Both gnomes look inquisitively at the last of the three, noticing the lights around him. The female says something to the male, who nods back at her. "So, who are you? One who appears to be able to use magic? What did you use your magic for? Shapeshifting, perhaps?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Barthrum says, "Hi, I am Barthrum. I am with these fine gentlemen as we have been doing services for the town master of Phandalin. As for the magic - I used it to protect myself against a turning crossbow contraption that an associate of yours is building back that way. She caused us no harm and we caused her no harm, but it was a harrowing experience to be honest."

Thenmer looks at the choices
"They said South. I have no better guess than to still try to go South and hope that works. Does one of you want to lead the way?"
Barthrum says, "Yessir." and goes that way.

Check out the barrels first.
Thenmer looks at the barrels a moment and then remembers his manners
"Hello is there anybody here?"

Barthrum says, "Well, that's not it." And he backs out and goes the other way.
He shugs
"Lets try the path to the right instead"
Waits for someone hardier to take the lead
Barthrum is leading the way.

Greetings, I am Dolgrim Frostbeard and this is Thenmer and Barthrum. We come in peace.
