"I don't know. All I was told is that the shipments have stopped and that nobody knows why. Usually, it'd arrive once every Tenday, more or less." Don-Jon doesn't express his opinion about the other matter, though. You already know it.
Stands there just looking cross. Clearly not expecting any useful clues to be found above ground
"You'd be a damn fool going in there to negotiate Don-Jon, I'd not trust them as far as I can throw 'em. Did the human miners have a camp above ground they would have used?"
"A camp above ground? No. Everyone would sleep inside the mine, as far as I know. It was more or less their home - at least for some of them."
You've been coming from the west and walked parallel to a mountain's cliff that was more or less straight for almost an hour before you reached the mine. The mine's entrance is at the turn where the mountain has a "bulge" that goes north about a hundred feet or so before turning to the east again, but you can't see whether it becomes a new straight line, returns to the previous line or something else entirely. Not from where you're standing. The mountain itself is a tall cliff rising above you for about 150', per your estimation, before it becomes hidden behind its own edge. You've seen the summit earlier, though, and you know the snowy thing is much, much higher than that. Lastly, the area is covered with low grass, some flowers and even a few small bushes, such as those that semi-cover the entrance to the mine.
Barthrum says, "Without any more evidence I will not start murdering the people inside. We can wait here until you go and talk to their leader or if you decide not to do that then we should start heading back right away. It's your call, mister."
"You don't understand how it is in the mines out here. Lots of little isolate groups can be picked off real easy and there are no kings guards to look after them. Whoever they were in the mine they were no miners and you can't find any tracks or evidence of the miners leaving. Its pretty obvious what happened here."
He looks very grumpy but is clearly not in any mood to go running in there on his own
Barthrum says, "How about this - we let our employer go and talk to their leader and if he comes back with some more information... or doesn't come back at all then we go in and figure things out the hard way."
We don't have signs or evidence of the miners being killed or ambushed either. I agree with the more diplomatic approach. We should escort our employer though, sending him alone might be too risky if you are right, Thenmer.
"Him going in alone would be going to his death if these people did away with the miners. Even if the miners died at the hand of someone else they would have said so, which is why we should be ready for trouble. Really ready."
"Your friend here is right. The workers wouldn't have left the place for no reason, and the monsters inside aren't those that should be here." He thinks for a moment, trying to remember something. "If my memory isn't playing tricks on me, I believe there should be a back-entrance to the mine. I'm not exactly sure where it is, but we should be able to find it if we just circle around. It might not be the best way to open negotiations, if that's what you want to try." It is obvious he prefers to fight the monsters, but would listen and go by your choice.
"Well maybe if we go round another way we will get a better idea what has happened. Not going to get it from them inside, whatever they've been up to they aren't going to be honest about it."
He looks around at the others to see if they are in agreement.
You circle around the mountain. Not sure where the backdoor is, if it really exists, Don-Jon follows close to the mountain's side. It takes you about 100' to the north, then bends to the east-northeast for another 200'. Then, the mountain's cliff turns to the south and takes you about 70' in that direction, before turning to the east again. The entire area looks the same as it did on the other side - mostly shrubs and grass, flowers... There are a few more trees on this side, however. Probably due to receiving slightly more sun than the other side. A few of these trees, you notice after you start for the east the second time, have hidden from you a rather peculiar site. A ring of 10 3'x7', 1 foot high tiny 'hills' lays around two small oak trees. At the end of each, towards the centre of the ring, sticking out of the ground is a pickaxe. Don-Jon has his attention close on the mountain's cliff, searching for the backdoor. For that reason, he doesn't look towards the ring and doesn't notice it.
Dolgrim approaches the circle and looks around, not sure whether the hills are any form of graves or some other religious site, he tries to be respectful and not trample the ground or the circle itself too much.
Now brought to his attention, Don-Jon rushes to the site and observes the hills. "Ah, no. There should be more than ten, though not a lot more. Sixteen, seventeen maybe. I see what you're getting at, though, and it is possible. All the more reason to eradicate those varmints."
"Do we need to know what killed them? For those of you who still think them in the mine are innocent do we need to have a look at the bodies and see what they died of?"

Barthrum says, "Ok, lets look around outside here first though, maybe there are signs of either someone leaving or bodies or something."

Knowing that the miners stayed underground Thenmer merely watches and waits while the others look around
"I doubt you will find much but I'm sure my poor eyes will be little help in looking anyway"
He keeps an eye on the opening to the mineshaft to see if anyone comes out or tries to spy in on them.
Barthrum says, "Without any more evidence I will not start murdering the people inside. We can wait here until you go and talk to their leader or if you decide not to do that then we should start heading back right away. It's your call, mister."

Barthrum gives out a little whistle as he sees the graves. "Well.. how many miners there was, Don-Jon? Ten maybe?"
Thenmer looks in horror at the sight. Clearly graves
"Oh no. That is the worst......."
Now brought to his attention, Don-Jon rushes to the site and observes the hills. "Ah, no. There should be more than ten, though not a lot more. Sixteen, seventeen maybe. I see what you're getting at, though, and it is possible. All the more reason to eradicate those varmints."

Barthrum says, "This also says something about their numbers I guess. It's probably quite a few of them in there."
He looks around the ground and nearby area.
"They probably brought the bodies here through the secondary entrance and not around the long way that we came."
Barthrum looks around for tracks or path towards the nearest part of the cliff (survival/perception check (it's the same bonus): 6)
Thenmer looks grimly at the graves
"Do we need to know what killed them? For those of you who still think them in the mine are innocent do we need to have a look at the bodies and see what they died of?"
