Thenmer carefully arranges his bowl and cutlery into precise positions.
"After the accident I do not consider a further career in mining reasonable. I do need to find some alternative source of income which does not involve lying under a pile of rocks for a week. Logically what are problems for some might be an opportunity for others to solve."
He picks up his spoon and begins to eat, methodically, almost like a metronome.
Then says, "I spent my whole life under ground. See my mom and dad built this storage place in a cave system and we went into hiding as a green dragon attacked our village. That was about 60 years ago. I have now been sent out to explore the outside world and see if it's safe for others to emerge."
"Also, 8 times 4 is 24. That's 2 gold and 4 silver. I have that much and can cover it in case you were wondering."
D: Thanks Tob, here's the coin. Tell me, have you seen the fuss outside? There was some flying beast on the horizon. Some of the folks even say, they've seen a dragon!
"I think you've got it wrong," he apologizes, "eight silver pieces total. Also, if you're interested in exploring and solving problems, you might want to go to the Townmaster's Hall. There might be some jobs posted on a sign outside the front door. Especially with all the trouble there's all around lately..."
Fastolph reached over to grab his cup and bottle. He briefly eyed the meals the others had gotten but thought nothing more of it. His belly still ached from a blow he had suffered when fleeing the Orcs and he could not stomach anything solid right now. And mead was basically as good as liquid bread so he was still getting his fill out of it.
He felt a slight twinge when he saw someone else pay for his drink but he seemed adamant about it and Fastolph knew better than to argue with a Dwarf who had his mind made up. He grunted a low thank you and swallowed his first cup in one go. He refilled it with a practiced motion.
'Dragons, flying beasts, trouble.' He looked across the table at the bartender. 'I thought this was a quiet town.' He emptied his second cup. 'It hasn't been burned down so I doubt there's a dragon flying about.' He filled his cup for the third time. 'What does this town have to offer that attracts trouble?'
"It usually is a quiet town. Most of the time anyway. It's only for these past few tendays. That creature, whatever it is, started appearing; the orcs are everywhere and various other troubles. As you say, the town is still standing, but..." He lowers his voice to a mere whisper, "This might not be the case for long. People are afraid and fewer travellers pass by here. I'm glad you four came, these days are bad for businesses like mine."
Economics were not really a subject Thenmer understood yet but he could see how the a distant cause might create the effect of the tavern having no money, not that it was pointed out to him. That seemed like a really interesting way of thinking about things, he wondered if he could perhaps make use of the concept one day. In the meantime the simple economics of his empty purse weighed on his mind rather more urgently.
"I think I will go and see what notices have been posted on the Townmaster's Hall when I have finished my meal. Will any of you come with me?"
After he's done talking with the dwarves, Toblen goes back into the back room. Occasionally coming out for a moment, standing behind the bar for a few moments, seeing that there's no one around he can serve and goes back in. When he hears Barthrum's call, he opens the door and goes out. "I'm happy to hear that, you're welcomed here anytime! Oh, and you can leave your dishes on the table when you're done, I'll take them in a moment."
Fastolph finished the rest of the bottle. The mead was good. Not Dwarven good but servicable.
'I could use some work.' He said after putting down his cup. 'I, uhm, ran into a patch of trouble and I'm short of cash at the moment. Barely got anything other than the clothes on my back. And I'm not about to mooch off someone's hospitality.'
He turned to Dolgrim. 'The plan was to stay for a couple of days and then move along. Guess I'm stuck for a while longer.'
He stretched and scratched his beard. 'Sign at the Townmaster's Hall, you said? Bit primitive but beggars can't be choosers, I suppose.' Fastolph rose from his seat, clearly intent on checking out whatever job Phandalin had to offer. 'Thanks for the drink.'
(OOC: All four of you seemed to agree so I'm moving it forward. If you still want to talk and answer Dolgrim's question, just say you talk along the way.)
You get up from the table and leave. Outside, you see Toblen waving at you from one of the windows, "Goodbye," he calls, "if you happen to do something interesting, be sure to share the story later!"
You keep walking until you reach the Townmaster's Hall. The Townmaster’s Hall has sturdy stone walls, a pitched wooden roof, and a bell tower at the back. The job board next to the front door features a sparse number of notices, all written in Common and in the same hand. Looking at the board, you can see three notices that read as follows:
“Dwarf prospectors found ancient dwarven ruins in the mountains southwest of here, and have been working an archaeological dig seeking treasure and relics. They need to be warned that a white dragon has moved into the area. Take the warning to them, then return to Townmaster Harbin Wester to collect a reward of 50 gp.”
“A clan of reclusive rock gnomes resides in a small network of caves in the mountains to the southeast. The gnomes of Gnomengarde are known for their magical inventions, and they might have something with which to defeat the dragon. Get whatever you can from them. If you bring back something useful and don’t want to keep it for yourselves, Townmaster Harbin Wester will pay you 50 gp for it.”
“The local midwife — an acolyte of Chauntea named Adabra Gwynn — lives by herself in a stone windmill on the side of a hill a few miles south of Phandalin. With dragon sightings becoming more common, it’s not safe for her to be alone. Urge Adabra to return to Phandalin. Once she’s safe, visit Townmaster Harbin Wester to claim a reward of 25 gp.”
From this, you can clearly understand that whoever wrote those notices clearly believes that the creature is a dragon, and they seem to be convinced that it's a white one.
Thenmer reads the notices carefully- logically balancing their importance and the time they will take in his mind.
“I think our man has decided we have a dragon problem. Seems logical. I hate to leave fellow dwarfs without warning but they are too far to reach today. I say we should go fetch the healer woman, if we are quick we could do that before nightfall “
He turns to the others to see if they agree with his logic.
D: Aye, the wilderness is dangerous place to be alone these days and not just because of the dragon. We shall find her, before some orcish band soe. Wait for me here, I'll go grab me some stuff.
Dolgrim disappears for few minutes. When you finally see him again, he is wearing and old scale mail, a huge warhammer is resting on his shoulder and a battered shield is hanging on his back.
'Ya wanna take the old woman over our own?' Fastolph asked with an eyebrow raised. A beat passed. 'Ay, they can prolly take care of their own.' He shrugged. 'Let's get this over with.'
Watching Dolgrim reminds Thenmer that it will be dangerous out there. He excuses himself to take a few minutes to find and don his armor.
"I am ready to go. As you say Fastolph, our kin can probably take care of themselves better than a healer and also they are further away so we could not reach them so soon even if we chose to. If all goes well then perhaps we can set out to warn them tomorrow"
He looks round to see if they are agreed on this course of action, keen to set off while there is still enough daylight to get there and back.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

"Secret" roll: 3
You take your things and begin to walk. The way is comfortable and, except for one climb to the hill, it is mostly in a plain area and so you walk quickly, relatively to your short legs, and you walk about ten kilometres (6 miles, I think) in about two hours.
As you climb the hill, you begin to see an old stone windmill. The windmill is surrounded by an iron fence. You pass the fence and arrive behind the windmill. As you start circling it to the front door, you hear loud banging noises. Suddenly, you hear a voice from above. When you look up, you see a woman waving at you from the second-floor window. "A little help?!" she calls, pointing at the direction of the door. As you walk around the corner, the first thing you notice are large, red dragon wings. However, after a moment, you see the creature's body which looks like a lion, and its humanoid head. Its tail, head and back feature deadly-looking spikes. The creature is banging on the heavy wooden door, trying to knock it down. It doesn't seem like the iron hinges that hold the door will last long. The creature turns its head to you, trying to assess if you pose any danger. For the moment, it only observes you.
Barthrum steps forward and says, "What are you doing?! If you keep banging the door so hard you won't hear the reply! She's on the other side, looking down a window. Come and have a look."
He waves the creature to follow along around the windmill.

Barthrum almost knocks his chair over when standing up, "I would very much like to see what notices have been posted on the Townmaster's Hall!"
He looks around for a moment, digests the rest of what Thenmer said and sits back down.
"After we have finished our meals of course."
And he just power-eats whatever is in front of him to be ready when Thenmer is.
"This is delicious, Master Stonehill!" he calls between the bites.

Dolgrim slowly eats his meat, and sips ale from the large stein, trying to ignore the other tables.
D: I think we've bumped into each other few times before, Thenmer's the name?
says dolgrim in dwarwish while nodding at Thenmer.
D: Don't think I've seen you two before though. Are you new to the town?
