While Ben and Ess wait for Kay and Ash to check things out, Ess says to Ben"hey bro - look over there. Seems to be the crew's quarters. I'll go check it out. Make sure there's no one else hiding like a little baby in there, bruh." he acts all tough.
If Ben has no objections, Ess will go and push the crew's quarters door open as it is already ajar, and take a look around. I will roll once Ben gives the ok.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
With Korrik’shelp (for advantage?),Ash will check the lizardfolk’s weapon stash, and do one more tour of the boat herself, looking for anything they missed before they approach the Lizardfolk…
Investigation: 8
Perception: 24
After checking everything over, she returns to report her finding to the party and discuss the plan for approaching the lizardfolk…
”So, how do we want to go about approaching the Lizardfolk? Can we split them up, you think? Or just open the door and jump them?…”.
"They are not likely to go out alone with a good reason. We could bring up some of the stash for inspection? It might bring them all out though and we might just as well just have jumped them."
((OOC: can I just check how the map is laid out? Am I right thinking that the only ways out of the Lizardfolk room are a) through the main door onto the deck, and b) through the three adjoining rooms but still out onto the deck? There are no stairs up or down from where they are are there? And just two exits from that section, both onto the central deck?))
If so, Ash will say, “Well, I have these and these…”, holding up her pouches of ball bearings and caltrops. “I could sprinkle one just outside their door… and the other outside the back exit they came round and through last time… … … We’d know they’re there, so could move through slowly, but if they come dashing out they could come a cropper”.
”And aside from that, we pelt them from range then move in to finish them off… or more likely, improvise depending on how it goes?!
”Korrik could always start up above their door again?… and clonk them as the dash through too?!”.
Ash and Korrik go to check the lizardfolk weapon stash, Ess heads into the crew's quarters and Ben heads to the room that no one else is in yet.
Ash / Korrik: The captain had said that the weapons were in the first mate's room, somewhere in the back of the room, perhaps behind a secret door. Ash's perception roll easily finds the door that the captain was referring to, and I've uncovered that new section on the map. Here are the details as well as what Ash and Korrik find in that room along with the weapons stash.
The first mate lies dead on the floor. This cabin occupies half the stern section on this deck, with one bulkhead running along the centerline of the ship. Along this bulkhead, leading up in the direction of the bow, is an enclosed companionway. At its foot, a door in the central bulkhead leads to the other part of the stern. On this door hangs a dark blue cloak.
A single bunk, the bed linen heaped in a pile, is set against the hull. At its foot is a brass-bound wooden sea chest, its lid closed. Under the bunk is a brass box, also closed.
In the center of the cabin, a plain wooden table is bolted to the deck. On it are two books, one open and propped up against the other. Beside the table is a wooden chair. Hanging from the ceiling over the table is a dimly lit hooded lantern.
Let me know what you might want to do with any of the above.
As for the secret weapons stash room on the south wall that you found: This cramped area, only four feet wide at the widest, is sandwiched between the adjacent cabin and the ship’s stern. It contains eight large, irregularly shaped bundles wrapped in oilskin and bound with light rope. These are piled at random on the deck, as though thrown in casually from the doorway.
After inspection, you see the eight bundles here contain the following equipment:
10 morningstars
10 longswords
10 shields
20 javelins
1 shield emblazoned on the front with the design of a lizard with forked tongue extended
There is no identification of any sort on any of the weapons. Just the shield.
Ben: this room is not occupied. The person in this room came up and was eventually killed and thrown overboard. In the center of this cabin sits a plain wood table on which stand a pewter flagon and a pewter mug. Beside the table is a wooden chair, and hanging over the table is a dimly lit hooded lantern.
Also hanging from the ceiling, at the aft end of the cabin, is a large cage that holds a parrot. It starts to squawk and repeat “Pieces of eight” several times, squawks again, and then falls quiet. It then just sits quietly watching Ben look around.
Next to the hull hangs an unoccupied hammock. Beneath it is a brass-bound wooden sea chest.
Lastly, you notice a pretty obvious secret door on the south wall of the cabin.
Ess: he heads into the crew quarters. Various unpleasant odors of humanoid occupation compete for recognition here. These crew quarters fill the entire forward part of this deck.
Around the perimeter of the cabin, slung between hooks on the bulkhead and on supporting poles, are eight hammocks. Beneath each hammock is a brass-bound wooden sea chest — most are closed, but two have open lids and appear to contain clothes. In the center of the cabin stands a long, plain wooden table with a bench along each of its longer sides. They all appear to be bolted to the deck in an attempt to keep everything in place. The table is stained and cluttered and has an untidy pile of dirty tin plates and cups roughly stacked in a large tin bucket below it. Over the table, hanging from the ceiling, is an unlit hooded lantern.
Against the starboard side, an area has been curtained off by cheap, dirty cloth hangings. Ess checks it out. The curtained area contains two large tin buckets standing side by side on the floor. Both are empty, but they are stained and dirty and emit a foul smell. (GROSS!)
Ess looks in the chests. They contain clothes and other personal effects. The garments are all stained, grubby, and in poor condition.
Ess gets the following items from the crew's quarters and will give them to Ben for the party treasure:
- A pack of well-used, greasy playing cards (the deck has two aces of spades) - Two sets of dice, one of them loaded - A book titled Grog Hovels
Maps are updated along with positioning. Please let me know what you want to do with all of this new information. There's lots to take in here, perhaps before the lizardfolk are planned for/dealt with.
((Ash, about the lizardfolks exits of their room - what you've explained seems to make sense and is what Ash thinks. I can't tell you for sure as no one has went back there yet. But Ash is almost certain that is the case. Only exits lead to the main deck.))
((OOC: Yes that makes sense about the exits. Just what Ash knows is fine. Perfect))
Ash checks out 1) the brass-bound wooden sea chest, and 2) the brass box under the bunk in the room she was investigating…
(some rolls if needed…)
Investigation for traps x2: 15 and 16
Thieves’ tools x2: 13 and 16
She’ll leave the weapons where they are for now, but report what’s there to everyone. And, if she can, she’ll take everything good from the chests ((and put into group loot)).
Ash, the sea chest is neither locked nor trapped. It contains some garments and a pair of boots, mostly quite old but reasonably clean.
The brass box under the bed is locked, but not trapped. You are able to pick the lock; it was quite easy for you. The box contains 500 sp.
Ash, will you try to open the chest that Ben is referring to in that other room that he is in, with the secret door? Korrik is helping, so any rolls would be with advantage.
Ben, you open the secret door and take a look inside.
A dark, cramped area only four feet wide at most, squeezed in between the ship’s stern and the adjacent cabin, appears to be a holding cell. A slim humanoid elf figure cowers in the far corner, chained to the hull. He notices the door open, and half mumbles and half says "Ughhh... wha... what. What do you want now..."
The person has been added to the NPC tab at the bottom left, labelled '???'. I've also updated all of the maps.
Ash, the sea chest is unlocked and contains grubby garments of no value. Concealed by the garments is a locked (but not trapped) iron box. You are easily able to open it with your thieves tools. It contains 200 sp, a small trident, a dagger, and the remains of a crossbow.
(this must be a large box to have that trident in it. I had to make it 'small' Anyways...)
Ben, the elf saw you, but he doesn't say anything else as you shut the door, head into the cargo hold, and you all begin to discuss what might be next.
Ash shares out the additional 200sp 4x ways ((please add 50sp to your sheets)). She leaves the other items in the box but alerts the party of what’s there. She assumes they will sweep the whole ship again, properly, before turning it over.
Ash agrees with Ben that they should deal with the Lizardfolk before speaking to the interesting-looking ‘Elf’.
"So do we try to lure them out or just jump them? We should try to keep at least one of them alive, maybe all three if it is possible. Perhaps you and Kay burst in from opposite doors and while I do what I do best from outside and Ess joins you?"
Ash narrows her eyes and looks around the room calculating options. “That sounds good… Two at each door. We burst in and take them down…”.
”Hey, you think lizards can see in the dark??… hmmm… Ben, think you can you take out the lights just in case?”.
She almost growls, “Hhrrrrggg!… Lets do this! You ready?… Ess?! You’re with me.. back door!… You two?!… You take the front door”.
((If everyone is ready, once Ben and Korrik are in place at the front, Ash leads Ess quietly through towards the back door of the Lizardfolk room))
Ash will tell Ess, “As soon as you see one of the Lizardfolk, you hit them with the butt for your sword… And keep hitting them til they’re all down for the count!”.
Ash, you and Ess position yourselves at the north door of the lizardfolk room. As you go there, you notice the rooms as you pass though them seem to be storage rooms.
Ess nods at Ash's instructions and taps the butt of his sword. "You got it, Bro, err, Ash."
Galley Stores: From iron hooks set into the ceiling hang three long strings of sausages, a large ham, and a hunk of meat. Against the hull are three sacks. Set against the bulkhead beside the door are a cask and a ceramic jar. Against the other bulkhead are set a large and a small cask and another ceramic jar. There is an opening in the latter bulkhead about three feet square and with its lower edge about three feet above the deck.
Ship's Stores: Two coiled lengths of rope and three rolls of sailcloth lie on the deck alongside a large box. A large wooden cask stands next to six lengths of wood planking. Set into a wooden rack, fastened to the bulkhead by the door, are two metal-headed hammers, two wooden mallets, two saws, and an adze. There is an opening, about three feet square and with its lower edge about seven feet above the deck, in the other bulkhead.
Korrik, you head to the upper deck and are right over the lizardfolk south door. Captain Ben (right?) is in front of the south door.
Please let me know exactly how this is all going to go down and I will take it from there. Currently, you don't know what the lizardfolk are doing in their room and where they are situated in the room etc. and if they will be surprised or not etc. all depends on how you all want to do this.
Maps are updated. Let me know if I have the positioning correct.
((What kind of light sources did they have in their room when Ben checked it earlier? He is also back to his normal look, I figure an hour has more than pasted at this point since he transformed to look like the captain.
Ben would also not be right at the door, probably 5' back, and would use thaumaturgy to open the door once he hears Ash and Ess go in.))
Ben waits for Ash and Ess to kick things off and prepares to open the door with thaumaturgy and then snuff the lights. Failing that (nothing to snuff) he will open the door with thaumaturgy and fall back until he is at the captain's door.

Ben nods after reading, or trying to read, the scroll and book.
"Sell pile. Least we have a buyer."
((Once Ben is done with the storage of the silk he will move to check on Kay and Ash's progress. So whatever they are up to.))
While Ben and Ess wait for Kay and Ash to check things out, Ess says to Ben "hey bro - look over there. Seems to be the crew's quarters. I'll go check it out. Make sure there's no one else hiding like a little baby in there, bruh." he acts all tough.

Ben, now back to his handsome self, opens the door between the rooms and say to Ash and Kay,
"Got another chest in here. Ash, when you get a moment. What's in there?"
(Just some RP there since the opening has already happened.)
He then says,
"And a hidden door. Let's see what else we have. More weapons?"
He gingerly opens it and looks in.
When the chest opening happens he'll stand a good distance back.
He'll look at Ess's haul dubiously.
Korrik, a bit shamefaced after getting knocked out, tags along helping Ash, watching her back and keeping a bit of distance.
