Ragnar pulls his hand back from the crystal and looks around at the others.
"I do not like this place," he says in a voice much quieter than normal. "Set me against a shield wall or heavily defended castle over this. We can't even see what we're up against."
Collectively the party is very much aware of their surrounds. Zira takes point and Gen-ga is not far behind. Moving forward the party passes a large massive statue that's toppled over and blocking the path into an immense library with bookshelves as far as the eye can see disappearing into darkness at varying ranges for the party's sight! The library has several tomes laying on the ground in piles as if they've been gone through by someone but there are countless shelves toppled over and untouched. Ellyrian banners hang everywhere along with portraits of some members of the Council of Eight but only three portraits still hang on the walls. Near the large toppled statue however the party spots a gnome trying desperately to hide.

Cowered behind the toppled statue you spot the edge of a small figure. Intermittently every few seconds you hear the figure's armor scratch against the statute. It isn't until a minute or two passes that the figure finally realizes that the jig is up, that he has been spotted, so he slowly stands up.
Before you is a small armored gnome with dark brown skin and black hair. The black hair forms a crown around a bald head and extends down into a pointy beard. Throughout the figure's profile, his hair is messily, and randomly, cropped cropped short. In these areas the hair becomes discolored patches or shows small points of exposed skin. A pair of needly creepy brown gnome eyes stare back at you. In his right hand the gnome holds an ornate metallic-silver rod. Both ends of the rod are adorned with an intricate carving of a horse.
The gnome points a metal rod in your direction and begins to speak with a nervous stammer, "Th-thats far e--enough. M-my compatriots have you surrounded. Th-this library is under the pro-protection of adventurers fr-from the institute!"
In a feeble attempt to further sell the story, the gnome points his rod towards the ruined ceiling of the library and fires off a ray of frost. Looking around you do not notice any other signs of life within the ruined library.
Glint sees a tall human woman, 6'2", fair skinned with red hair tied in a loose braid over her shoulder, wearing a set of steel lamellar armor over a leather hauberk. She has a round shield on her left arm, painted with a yellow wolf's eye that seems to faintly glow in the darkness. An battleaxe is at her side, and several smaller handaxes are hung on her belt along with a curved animal horn. Glint sees the woman stare at him a moment with green eyes, then she puts her hand on Ragnar's shoulder.
"Ragnar. I think he is more scared of us." Erika speaks quietly.
To the gnome, she raises her voice so he can hear clearly. Glint would know her thick accent is not of Embera, but is very similar to that of the blond armored man she just whispered to.
"Hello, friend. If you are of the Institute, then we are here to help. You can put down the... stick. Come, let us speak peacefully."
OOC: Accent Reference: Mjoll the Lioness (Erika's Voice)
As Erika speaks Glint slowly begins to look visibly more relaxed. The gnome addresses Ragnar, his stutter slightly improving. "I'm from the i-in-institute. I was searching Ellyria for artifacts with two of my ki-kinsmen. I got separated from them two ni-nights ago and was captured by the group of bandits stationed outside. Is the coast cl-clear now? I haven't seen my father or si-sister, but I hope they are okay. I was hoping you would have seen them, but given your re-response it appears you have never seen a gnome before!"
Turning back to Erika, Glint laughs a little. "Put down the stick. F-f-fu-funny. F-for some reason it cannot be put down!" As Glint removes his hand from the immovable rod he presses the small button hidden on its side. Glint now stands before the party unarmed but with his magical rod eerily hovering in the air, within a quick arm's reach of the gnome. "So who e-exactly are you lot if not bandits?"
Erika glances at the rod. "Clever trick, little one. Sadly, we have not come across any of your kin yet, at least not since we left Zozobra. We..." she pauses, gesturing to the group, "are all part of Holbright Institute excavation team... though we have also lost some along the way. You are very lucky or very clever to have survived this long." Erika glances around, seeing no others. "Especially all alone."
Putting her hand to her chest, she speaks again. "I am Erika Grimsdóttir, Shield-maiden of Hofstaoir." She looks to the others to make their own introductions.
Ragnar raises an eyebrow at the rod hanging in the air and then laughs. He slips his battle axe into its loop at his belt and pushes his shield back up on to his shoulder.
"I'm Ragnar Knutsson," Ragnar begins. "Once there was a title that went with that, but no more."
He glances around the large room, past Glint and the toppled bookcases.
"When did you last see one of these bandits? Do you know how many there were? And -" he pauses for a moment. "Were their shapeshifters among them?"
By now Glint has fully composed himself. "L-looks like my day is shaping up then! Well met Erika and Ragnar, fellow institute members! Though Ragnar, your shock towards my gnomish appearance is confounding. Having spent time in Zozobra you obviously must have received word of my clan, the Dreidylen's. We are the greatest magical toy-makers in all of the realm! When we manage to find my father and sister I will ensure that you are awarded with our must prized limited edition toys, as well as my father's eminently valuable signature. Your family members will be overjoyed!"
Glint continues, addressing Erika and Ragnar's questions, "One of my stature can never be in too short supply of cleverness or luck. I merely picked the right opportunity to use my unique skills to step away from my captors." As Glint speaks he withdraws a set of thieves tools from his pocket and flourishes them in the air before returning them into his garments. "As for the bandit's numbers, I couldn't confirm with any certainty. I never saw more than two at a time and am unsure if they had the ability to change their appearance. Unfortunately the bandits were taller humanoids who, unlike gnomes, all look the same."
"That's in the past. It is the future I am more curious about! As I said, it appears by luck has finally turned, I am still a bit lost and unsure of which direction to head to return to my family. But, If you are truly also of the institute then perhaps our paths for the near future lie together. How may one of my considerable skills be of use to your group?"
"Holbright contracts with you yes," Gen-ga Lore a vaguely familiar bronze scaled dragonborn says with a bright smile at Glint.
"Yes...yes...I recall," Zira, a towering red haired fey touched half-orc, adds. "They bring the most interesting objects back," she says with a nod at Glint. "Please....please don't be afraid," she coaxes the gnome towards the party.
OOC: Two NPCs are Gen-ga and Zira which are the Institute leaders in the party.

A flamboyantly dressed half-elf looks on at his companions, his arms crossed as he taps his foot. His multicoloured hair is shaved at one side, a bit of a fashion statement in the edgier parts of Zozobra. A parakeet sits on his shoulder, squawking what seems to be a word “Dreadbane”
Ted steps forward at the parakeet’s announcement, “Why thank you Echo, at least somebody thought to introduce me.” A boisterous smile fills his face, painted with colourful make up. “I’m the mighty and fearsome Dreadbane, no doubt you’ve heard of me. But never fear, I’m here with the institute too, you can call me Ted if it would ease your nerves.”
“I know your toyshop, I’ve used a few of your creations for some escapades, surely not their intended purpose. If you want to scurry home, you can head back the way we came, but we plan to go further in. If you join us, you could become a part of my legend, maybe even a sidekick.”
As Glint racks his brain for memories of his contacts in the Institute, he believes he remembers meeting a bronze scaled dragonborn on a previous occasion. Releasing the immovable rod from its point anchored in the air, Glint returns the object to his backpack before bounding over to the party. "I think I will stick around! After encountering the perils of wandering alon,e being with a group will be a refreshing change. Plus it was the Institute who hired me to be out here anyways!"
"Unfortunately, all I have found so far on this trip is this unassuming rod. Despite it's appearance I believe it has incredible potential! Somehow it seems to defy gravity! I'm not quite sure how it works, but think of the potential practical applications of such a marvel! Perhaps my sister and father have found similar wonders here in the ruins!" As the gnome mentions his family members, you watch as his expression turns noticeably sullen for a few moments.
This expression disappears at Ted mentioning that he knows of Dreidylen Toys. "Mr. Dreadbane! I think you and I will get along splendidly. I have a new creation that would make it appear as if an individual can summon the power of dragons! Just the sort of thing to help further cement a legend! Now we just need to stumble across the right moment for it... not that I would wish danger and adventure upon anyone... though danger and adventure always sounds fun..." A mischievous smile now adorns Glint's face.
Ragnar watches Glint as he speaks and though the gnome appears trustworthy enough, Geng-ga and Zira accepting him as one of their own is enough to confirm his own impression.
"I spent little time outside of the institute when I was in Zozobra," Ragnar says. "And my interest in toys is limited. I still have the only toy my father every gave me."
Ragnar reaches down and grabs the small hand axe dangling from his belt. The blade is notched and pitted, but still sharp.
"He said I had just started to walk. He showed me how to gut the first rabbit I killed with it." Ragnar says, lost for a moment in one happy memory. Then he stops and looks at Glint again "I am certain anything my father received because of me would not be well received."
He looks around the ruined library.
"We should keep moving. These bandits will still be here."
Ragnar stars moving deeper into the library towards the side still cloaked in darkness.
"We could certainly use whatever help you can offer, Dreidylen. Have you explored any of this library, or discovered anything of the fields of purple crystals leading towards it? In the time you have not spent captured and evading capture, that is." Erika moves closer to the gnome, providing a second flank as Ragnar proceeds towards the library..

We’ll make a perfect team, and we will avoid danger.... completely. The two of us, you will not see in any sort of trouble, mischief or hijinks.” Ted is not even trying to hide his deception, and seems to just be trying to list off what Gen-ga wants to hear. “You guys go on ahead, I’ll help glint here with his..... things. So what does this do?” Ted curiously reaches out to examine Glint’s tools.
I need everyone to make a perception check.
