Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I'm new to D&D beyond. I have an idea for a character who used to be a baker but got so lonely/bored he wanted to become a pro [something] to bring his pastries to life. My problem is I can't figure out if [something] would be an wizard (necromancy or transmutation, idk which would be able to animate non-animate objects) or an artificer (of which I don't know much about). If someone can help me figure out which would suit my character better and maybe a race or something to combo with it, that'd be great. Thanks!
If the chef wants to bring pastries to life, here is what I am thinking:
1) Any class that can take the Animate Objects spell. This includes bards, sorcerers, wizards, artificers, and forge domain clerics
2) A class with the ability to summon familiars, which can be reflavored as looking like your pastries. This has the downside of the pastries you use for class abilities are not actually physical objects. Most casters and some other classes have such summoning abilities
Here are my ideas:
A) College of Creation bard. This class can get Animate Objects and has subclass features that can be used to "summon" more pastries. I once had a player for a one-shot use this subclass to make sandwiches all the time.
B) Swarmkeeper Ranger. A stretch to be sure, but since pastries are tiny you can reflavor your swarm as appearing like a bunch of pastries that move you around the battlefield.
C) Honestly, any wizard would work. They get Animate Objects and can also pick up summoning spells that you could reflavor so your summons appear like they are made from food.
If you only have access to the PHB, I would say a wizard is probably your best bet
Thank you! These seem like good ideas. I have the PHB and Xanathar's and my friends have a few other 5e source books, but I have lots of time to think about it though given the campaign is scheduled for next summer :P Thanks again! :D
I think the power you are after is the animate objects spell (like kaboom mentioned). On that note the artificer is weakest because it gets that spell later than the others.
I really like the idea of a wizard that keeps their spells ina cookbook, perhaps order of the scroll subclass so it can be an animated cook/spellbook that helps you with baking.
The chef feat is also a good early pick, perhaps as a variant human.
Tasha's cauldron of everything has a lot of new feats and subclasses, definitely worth picking up after XGtE.

On the other hand, an artificer can make a homunculus at level 2. Maybe in this case it's a hamantashculus.

Bard, wizard, and artificer make sense to me.
