Im currently running Rime of the Frostmaiden for my group and we are all really enjoying the campaign . However I am reading ahead, and in chapter 3 have come to a section relating to a treasure chest found in the fortress of Sunblight. One of the items in the chest reads as follows:
”a quilted smoking jacket sized for a dwarf sewn with fifty gemstones (500gp)”
My previous experience reading through campaign books suggests that this means EACH gem is worth 500gp, making the contents of this jacket worth 25,000 gold! This seems a little wild for characters who will be level 5. Am I misunderstanding? Should it be a total of 500gp in value, making each gem worth a measly 10 gp? There is also “a malachite beard comb set with seven red garnets (750gp)”, so if I am reading it right, this chest holds a total of over 30k gp!
Any clarity anybody could provide would be great :)
Yeah, I don’t think you are reading it right. Each time it is describing one item. It isn’t “fifty gemstones” it is “a jacket with fifty gemstones on it”.
When we raided Xardorok's chest, we all assumed it was a jacket with fifty gems on it that, in total, was worth 500gp. We didn't have a cleric, so none of us particularly cared what the gems were worth individually.
And, considering what happens to Ten Towns immediately after this (assuming your players haven't dealt with the dragon already), it really didn't matter what loot we got anyway because we had nowhere to spend it. We ended up just donating it to Bryn Shander to help with the rebuilding efforts.

The ( X gp) is the value of the item being described, be it a jacket or a comb.
