The spell only has a duration of 10 min per cast and requires concentration (which are both overly restrictive, independently of how Fairies fly, IMHO)
I sort of agree with you, I am just trying to find ways they could have kept magical flight in as a thought experiment. Maybe remove time restrictions on fly or by just letting them cast it at will without a limit of number of times. Having to use concentration may or may not be an issue. That may be the crutch that allows it back in. I think the big fear are spell casters hovering out of range while maintaining concentration on control spells.
Winged Tiefling from SCAG has flight at level 1 whilte still having Fire Resistance and Dark Vision. Aarakocra also has a 50 feet of flight, which is more than most other creatures ground speed. Druidcraft is a near worthless cantrip with it's only potentially useful ability being sparking a fire. And yes, once per day, which is less than an unlimited number of times per day which is what it was originally or should I point to you once again the difference between "Dark Vision" the racial trait and "Dark Vision" the spell, and no one said anything about needing more fairy fire, I don't think anyone has even argued on needing more of that or even hinted that it's a concern. Honestly if thy dropped it entirely for the ability to become tiny or just the magical flight back that'd be a win considering the race would have something unique about it again.
Winged Tiefling can still wear medium armor. Druidcraft is actually terrible, an odor that doesn't linger and can only be detected in a small area and smell is not really that great a sense to use for subtle messaging especially when you could do anything else. And predicting the weather the next day is about as easy as looking up and asking the DM what it looks like if weather ever comes up or at worst a Nature or similar skill check. And no one ever cares about the snuffing aspect of these spells since it requires an action so it's not really any more useful than pinching the wick of a candle, touching the torch to the ground, or just stomping on whatever is smoking when your turn comes around.
The method of releasing UA as intentionally overpowered, and then nerfing it before official release, seems to put a lot of people off. People liked Fairy because of Munchkinry - it was overtly better than most other races, and now they seem upset that it's been tuned down. I love the new fairy. It was never a good idea to release an unrestricted flying race with hover.
