I'm trying to understand the sequence of events when the Halt version of the Command spell is used.
The spell says "The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or follow the command on its next turn" and "The target doesn't move and takes no actions". The result of the spell lasts for 1 round.
Let's say our Paladin with a low initiative roll is attacked by a standard opponent with a slightly higher initiative roll. After this, the Paladin casts Command (Halt) and the enemy fails the save. Our fighter, standing beside the opponent, then moves away from him to go attack someone else, provoking an attack of opportunity from the opponent.
So, does the Halt Command start taking effect at the end of the Paladin's turn or at the start of the opponent's next turn? i.e. does the 1 round duration start during the Paladin's turn, so the opponent can't take an attack of opportunity? Or does it start when the opponent follows "the command on its next turn" and run through until the start of their subsequent turn? If so they could take the attack of opportunity, but would NOT be able to take an attack of opportunity after their next turn.
From a RAW perspective, it sounds like the Command only takes effect from the start of the creature's turn, but I'd be tempted to have it start on the Paladin's turn, which makes more logical sense.
RAW, the spell says "The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or follow the command on its next turn." So the Halt only takes effect on the creature's turn.
The DM is free to interpret Halt as them not being allowed to use their reaction before their next turn, but that is not RAW.
