Hey all! I'm looking to make a new character and was wondering if I take the Eldritch Adept feat into Armor of Shadows as a Ranger if that would work. I technically meet the prerequisite since I can cast Ranger spells, right? Also, if it's 'at-will' does that mean it basically becomes a cantrip / does it 'give' me the spell? Essentially, I wouldn't need to have learned the spell?
I figured it out. You technically can't meet the prerequisites as you don't *start* with spellcasting. You get spellcasting at level 2 so you must wait until level 4 to take it
It should work, and the spell would show up in your 1st-level spells as AT-WILL, though by the Invocation's description you can only cast it on yourself.
However, you technically shouldn't be able to take the Eldritch Adept feat at Ranger 1, since you don't get the Spellcasting feature until level 2.

Yes, it would work and you could treat it as a cantrip. Mechanically speaking, it is only +1 AC against a Studded Leather. Until you don’t have 20 DEX, you could achieve same AC value with a Half-Plate at the cost your stealth. Of course you can always find some +1 Studded Leather or even a Mithral Half-Plate to have exactly same AC as Mage Armor.
I believe you can find better feats. Even Dual Wielder would give you the same AC bonus & improve your damage if you plan to follow two-weapon fighting route. Sharpshooter and Crossbow Expert are also amazing if you go Archery. Skulker, Alert, Lucky, there are thousands of better feats than Eldritch Adept for Mage Armor.
Heck, Magic Initiate (Wizard or Sorcerer) would get you once per long rest Mage Armor plus 2 cantrips, though they wouldn't be using your Ranger spellcasting ability.

If someone was playing a Ranger in my campaign I’d let them take Eldritch Adept (Armor of Shadows) at 1st level as a Variant Human. It’s not overpowered and you can take that without being able to cast spells.
Technically Eldritch Adept has the prerequisite Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature. DnDB will let you pick it for variant human feat, but you do technically need to have spell slots or pact magic slots.
