So 5e seems to have a lot of built in constrictions, that almost all players are treated equally when it comes to scoring a "hit". Melee vs. spell hits and such.
Yet the Ranger/Fighter can get a decent bonus to hit on ranged attacks and this people on this forum have said it is "out of bounds". If you're making an archer, it'd be pretty dumb to NOT take this.
OMG, no wonder your other party members are jelly....you "min-maxed" and have a "power gamer" build!! No....I just rolled up an archer. Don't want to get into melee combat, attacking at range is my forte. Attacking at zero range gives me Disadvantage. I'll avoid that like the plague.
Sad thing is, my archer is often top dps and the one that takes little/no damage in a combat. I'm thinking of taking Crossbow Expert just so I don't have Disadvantage attacking someone in melee range...and I can stop being so "cowardly".

Ultimately nothing is officially 'out of bounds' if it's part of an official supplement. A DM may choose to restrict some choices, but that's a house rule at their discretion. Some features are more powerful than others and that's just the nature of games - it's practically impossible to create a perfect balance when you have so many factors involved, from class, to race, to spells, to levels, equipment and feats, etc.
However, I will say that if you take no damage then your DM is possibly at fault for that. Either they're not introducing enough enemies with ranged attacks/movement abilities to get close to you, or just not targeting you. Logically, if enemies see you doing the most damage to them, they should definitely retaliate against you. One good Hold Person spell on you from a DM's creature is going to put your damage down to zero.
Hey RainFaireMan o/ It was a while I hadn't seen a post from you, since the last one about your DM not giving you magic items because you do too much damage (btw, how did that end up?).
Anyway, long range weapons (bows but especially the crossbow and the English Longbow) have been historically the deadliest weapons known to mankind before the coming of the gunpowder weaponry. Although to me as well the question or doubt (if there's either) is not clear, I'd say you are at no fault in staying at distance and making enemies look like pincushions, if anything that is exactly what an archer or ranged combatant should always do: take an advantageous position and start shooting at everything in range, end of story. I agree with VillainTheory that the one at fault the most here is most probably the DM for not making you guys face threats that are balanced ALSO based on your playstyle.

Wouldn't be much for anyone to be "jelly" about if your DM used some archers too.
What's the question?
