Hi All, I’m planning a new campaign (5E) where, very shortly into the adventure, the characters will captured, drugged & unconcious for at least 24 hours. Finding no clear answer in the DMG or on the forums, my question is: what effect, if any, will this have on any prepared spells for divine & arcane casters? I know a cleric/Paladin has to pray for his spells each day, but if he doesn’t pray for new ones without having used any the previous day, do they expire, or carry over? Likewise a magic user who had memorized spells, did not use them, and was then drugged & unconcious for greater than 24 hours.
Additionally, would this situation effect Cantrips? I want to say no, bc those are always known, but I could be wrong.
i don’t think this situation would effect class abilities that renew after short/long rests (ie: battle maneuvers, channel divinity...), though I’d be interested in any thoughts, as well as any info for other classes whose abilities would be effected/immune to this situation.
I know as DM I can just say whatever I want, but I’d like to know for my own curiosity, and if there is no definitive answer, I’d appreciate some suggestions and opinions.
There is nothing in the rules for being knocked unconscious, sleeping, waking up, taking a long rest, or preparing spells that says spells previously prepared are un-prepared. In fact, the text of preparing spells says "you can" rather than "you must" when talking about changing your prepared spells after a long rest, which shows that your prepared spells stay as-is until you change them.
And spells known, like cantrips and those of classes that do not prepare spells, are similarly not said to be affected by rest or unconsciousness, so they are not affected by rest or unconsciousness.
