Maybe I'm wrong in this and I could definitely use some help clarifying... But I thought the Warlock Patron and the powers/spells they granted were separate from the actual Warlock class you chose.
The Patron Chosen in level 1 defines the Archetype (subclass).
Perhaps you mean the Pact that is chosen at level 3 (Blade, Chain or Tome). The Pact is only a feature of the Warlock, although a relevant one. The pacts especially give a Warlock unique Invocations to choose from.
The Patron on the other hand defines the Archetype features the Warlock gets.
