A reborn *can* finish a long rest in 4 hours *if* they remain still. Here is my question:
If a reborn is doing so on watch and there is a random attack encounter, and he or she engages in combat - they break the motionless rule, and therefore cannot finish a long rest in 4 hours.
But since the encounter will only last a few rounds, at most, and nowhere near the hour it takes to ruin everyone else’s long rest - does the Reborn just finish the full 8 hour rest period to gain the benefits of a long rest? Or must they start their 4 over again?
This is an issue for me because I have 4 different small encounters that will be poking at my PCs over the course of 8 hours. It seems odd that the one who doesn’t need sleep at all would be the ONLY one not to attain a long rest due to these annoyances… Help!
I'd let the Reborn follow the normal long rest rules in this case, and I don't see any text that would suggest the rules to be otherwise. A Reborn can finish a long rest in four hours if they remain still, but that doesn't say they don't follow the normal rules if they don't remain still, so I'd say they do.
"You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in an inactive, motionless state, during which you retain consciousness."
Looks like it gives you a special method of long resting in 4 hours, but says nothing about removing your other methods of long resting. You should be fine to take a standard, 8 hour long rest, following the standard rules.
Edit: Actually, Warforged is a bit unclear, so I removed that bit. I suppose it could be interpreted as "6 of those 8 hours" instead of "6 straight hours."
The Reborn's special 4hr long rest is much like the Elf's trance, in that the only changes to the long rest are:
1: the character remains conscious for the entire period of time but isn't moving, instead of needing to sleep for at least six hours.
2: the period of time required is reduced from 8hrs to 4hrs.
The rules relating to continuing a long rest after a brief interruption would still apply to the Reborn's 4hr long rest, because it is still a long rest. The combat wouldn't count towards the 4hrs, but that's less than a minute of interruption before resuming the long rest.

Okay, let me see if I can put this in words:
