When I try to get a homunculus through the Infusion: Homunculus Servant on DnDBeyond it asks for a gem or crystal worth at least 100gp which I find weird. On the description of the infusion, it states "You learn intricate methods for magically creating a special homunculus that serves you. The item you infuse serves as the creature's heart, around which the creature's body instantly forms." Nowhere does it mention needing an expensive gem to serve as the creature's heart. In the class feature Infuse Items it describes to use an infusion you "Touch a non-magical object and imbue it with one of your artificer infusions, turning it into a magic item. An infusion works on only certain kinds of objects, as specified in the infusion’s description." As an item isn't specified in the Infusions description couldn't you use any item you want to serve as its heart? Going by RAW it seems like you can pick up a fork and make a homunculus using it. Is there something I'm not seeing here that asks for a gem at all?
Just makes you value the little guy even more :) Mine is in the shape of a beetle (named "Beetle"), with color matching that of the gem used for the heart.

do you have any idea if it uses up the gem after death/making it dissapear?
“If you or the homunculus dies, it vanishes, leaving its heart in its space.” So the heart sticks around ready to be infused again, unless someone goes out of their way to destroy it.
So, even if you are not an an alchemist artificer you still get a homunculus servant? I read that alchemists are the ones who get it. Thank you!
Homunculus Servant is an infusion that any Artificer can take.
It was an Alchemist subclass feature in an Unearthed Arcana playtest from before the release of the original 5e Artificer class back in...I don't know, 2017? I think? But that version of it was never formally published. The actual published 5e Artificer class has always had it as available to all Artificers.
Sorry for the necro, but does anyone know what kind of item I can add to the dndbeyond Character sheet so it recognises it as a valid item? It keeps saying to me "There are no items that match the requirements for infusion" when I try to infuse the homunculus servant in there.
Edit: found it, you need to enable 2014 core rules.

Right under the name of an infusion is what type of item the infusion can apply to.
It should say that about the infusion if you look at the (long) description of the Infusions class feature, or here at this link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/tcoe/artificer#ArtificerInfusions

Ah ok thanks for the response and link. Sucks it's so expensive but oh well.

Make it a Pearl, and it doubles as your spell component for Identify.
