A player in my last session wanted to stab a small creature, lift it up, move it, and place it on the floor with his action. Would this be possible, and if so, what are the needed checks?
Moving a creature against its will would require a Grapple attack, which is different from a weapon attack. A PC can't do both unless it has Extra Attack.
Though, you are the DM so you can allow anything if you think it advances the story and makes things fun; that includes adjusting or ignoring combat mechanics. The PC, however, does not have a mechanism available to perform those actions themselves - they would have to describe what they want and you say yes or no. And remember (and perhaps remind the player) that just because you allowed it once does not mean you will automatically allow it again. It doesn't become a new mechanic that they have access to, unless you say so. Personally I applaud them coming up with some colourful plan like that, and allow it with something like an attack roll and normal strength check. But it's one time only. In movies the hero comes up with some MacGyver plan, but they only use it once and never again. That is the way with MacGyver plans. It is known

Thank you. I'm just worried because I am a new DM and I feel like I'm restricting my players too much.
