Yesterday, when playing a Hexladin, my DM said that the damage bonus from Hexblade's Curse cannot be applied to damage rolls not from the regular weapon attacks (Divine Smite, Booming Blade, Hex, etc.). Wait, the description of Hexblade's Curse specifies that it applies to damage rolls, without saying where the damage roll has to come from. Unlike hex, Hexblade's Curse seems like it doesn't only affect attacks. Is the DM correct? I can totally understand if they are trying to balance out my character, but I don't think that's how Hexblade's Curse is intended. Maybe they were confusing it with hex. The boon of HC is it affects ANY type of situation where you roll one or more dice for damage, at least how it is written, unlike hex, which only can be applied to damage that results from an attack roll.
Yes. Hexblade curse applies to any damage roll not just from attacks.
It is important to note however that the weapon damage and the smite damage are a single combined damage roll (that is why crits double both) so it only applies once.
DJC is correct. In fact, you can do absolutely horrific amounts of damage by combining Hexblade's Curse with the popular interpretation of Magic Missile that you only roll damage for 1 dart and multiply, and that only works because HC doesn't even require you to attack, let alone require a weapon attack, let alone require a "regular" weapon attack.
