Hey everyone. So I'm playing in a 1-shot tonight and the DM has asked the 3 players if we would like sidekicks as its high lvl stuff and there's only 3 of us and there's not a "dedicated healer" in sight. So I've been looking through Tasha's rules on SK's it says you can pick ANY creature of CR 1/2 or lower and that for higher lvl's of sidekick you take their stat block and add to it. I guess ultimately it boils down to what constitutes a stat block? Is it the whole thing? Is it just its ability scores, HP's and AC?
The point: We're lvl 20, the SK's are lvl 10 and I would like a pixie healer, for 2 reasons: 1.) I'm playing a goblin ranger and I think the dynamic between a goblin and pixie, at least the goblin and pixie I have in mind, would be pretty funny, but mostly B.) because of the pixies innate spellcasting.
But I can't tell if the SK keeps it's innate racial spells and abilities.
I read a post on RPGbot that says they DO NOT keep their racial stuff but the post said it hadn't been updated for the Tasha ruleset. Is this true in the case of Tasha's rules? Do SK's keep their racial abilities or no? Also if it is true, and they don't, what is the point of picking a CR 1/2 or lower creature if it loses all of its racial "identity" so to speak? Is the restriction just to stop parties having Dragon/Beholder/Lich etc etc etc SK's? So is it just a case of it can "look" like any CR 1/2 or lower creature but for all intents and purposes its just a warrior, expert or spellcaster cosplaying a pixie, with none of the gumpf that makes a pixie a pixie?

Not actually true, but for a Pixie, you're fine. Expert and Spellcaster Sidekicks have to have a language - Warriors don't. Presumably you're making a Spellcaster, but Pixies have a language, so it's fine.

Whole thing. You just need DM permission.

Keeps everything.

I don't know where you got the idea exactly that they "lose" anything, but the Tasha's rules take a pre-existing NPC and then add onto it - nothing is lost. The only mystery in sidekicks is whether or not the first sidekick level adds a hit die or not.
Bear in mind that if you choose a Tiny sidekick, its hit dice will be smaller - because the sidekick classes use the hit die size of the original creature and NPCs have their hit die size set by their size, there's an intrinsic incentive to want your Sidekick to be as big as possible. That said, nothing at all wrong with Pixies!
What part wasn't exactly true? The CR 1/2 or lower? And yes I do want to make them a spellcaster/healer.
I have their permission...to look into it lol. Because they were more clueless than I was. Basically, when I 1st had the idea I was fully under the impression that they did keep all their racial abilities, thus the Pixie choice bc lets face it, a SK that can cast polymorph, regardless of lvl, is hella strong. Not to mention the idea of a pixie polymorphing into an invisible T-rex is freaking awesome, but alas, the Pixie's invis is concentration, which I didn't remember at the time so that idea is out the window. But yea, in a nut shell the DM made me doubt myself, again.
Okiedoke. xD
Tbh I got the idea that they lose everything from my DM. He asked the question "Do you still keep your innate stuff?" and I had to respond that I actually didn't know as I'd never considered that, so I did a smidge of digging and couldn't find anything to clarify the Tasha rules. Plus a lot of people on reddit said they don't and while I don't believe *anything* I read on reddit, That, together with the RPGbot post and the self doubt from my DM/brother, I got in my own head and started going round in circles trying to find a clear answer. So I posted this here, as its for tonight's (Sunday) game, hoping to bring it to someone who did know, to sorta "brute force" the problem so to speak, you were that someone and I thank you :D
As for tiny creatures, that I knew going into this and it's all good with me. I don't actually care if either of them, Goblin or Pixie, survive the 1shot. If I'm honest I don't really want to have a SK to begin with as I'm playing a lvl 20 Drakewarden Ranger (for the 1st time I might add), so I'll have 3 toons to control if the DM doesn't want to play the pixie and that's a lot. If no one else wants it either, I won't use it. Just wanted the option, made, and on the table if need be, y'know. "Fail to plan, plan to fail" and all that jazz. But I can't "make" it proper as Pixies *STILL* aren't in the list of mobs you can create a homebrew "copy" of.
Just to point out, if its level 10 while the rest of you are 20, I wouldn't expect it to live very long. Unless your DM goes out of their way to avoid catching it in an AoE or otherwise attacking it.
I know. It's called a challenge. Tbh a party of lvl 20's with anything lvl 10 accompanying them, Sk, PC, DMPC is more than likely going to perish. That was never in any doubt

That any creature of sufficiently low CR qualifies - as I said, there's a language requirement on two of the three sidekick classes. But your plan is fine. You'll have 2 ASIs with which to raise the Pixie's Wisdom, assuming you pick healing spells where its Wisdom will matter.
