The most use I've ever gotten from the spell was to find a hidden Mimic that we suspected was around but weren't sure. Kept casting Prestidigitation on objects until the symbol didn't stick, because the spell works on objects but not creatures to create a visible symbol.
I'd say if it's rated at all, it's overrated. It's a nothing spell. Sure it's cute and all, and it can be used if the GM says you're cold, you can cast it and state that no, you're not. But having played for 38 years, I've never seen Prestidigitation actually achieve anything. No genius solution to a tricky problem or riddle or the like. I play a bard who has Unseen Servant so his clothes are always clean and freshly ironed - but that's all, it doesn't let him do anything wild and useful, and Prestidigitation is the same.

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.

Yes, it's overrated.
